Supposed to include this drone picture on the last proper post, missed it somehow. Regards heating. Heres the plan. Obviously a work in progress and now there won't be a ground array, just a direct air source heat pump. Also a pump on the woodburner feed. But roughly this is still whats happening. It doesnt really exist so doing it myself. There is a company that will sell me this heat store though with the correct inputs and so on. Er I think I can still do this with a heat pump with two separate outputs, hot and a bit less hot, overwise it will have to be one set of pipework and a switchover valve, but I dont think thats what will happen. Er and probably the woodburner pipes will enter heat store higher up as likely to be fecking hot. The heat store is meant to retain stratification so not ideal to gently caress with that.  But the gist of it is: - a central thermal heat store of water - inputs of heat - heat pump - wood burner - outputs - heat exchanger - for domestic hot water direct with mains cold - underfloor heating - in summer a bypass of thermal store to allow heatpump to run in reverse and provide underfloor cooling And its a vented system so I don't need a grown up to do it for me as not super high pressure. Failing that. Hot water bottle and a cardigan.  More battens. Leaving spaces for skylights.  Up to the ridge and trying to plot how the ridges will work. I'm going to mortar them on as it looks so much nicer than a fully dry installation. But you have to have some element of mechanical fixing so need a ridge batten, double fat to screw down the stays into.  Funny splits brackets to fix them.  Cutting end battens trying to maintain the not overlapping joints which I don't really see why it matters.  Fully macdonalds.  Examining the flashing kits for the velux windows I've bought for one wing as the other, vaulted roof I've ordered some kind of unknown low profile skylights. They don't have any instructions online or much help as to how to fit them. But I reckon I can just copy whatever velus says to do and adapt it to them. Something like this: (If I bother with the hidden roller shutters which probably not)  There is a slighly vague spec for how to install them and I need a timber upstand. So get upstanding.     Yeah so hopefully this works. Delivered soon. Got some tiles to sort of plan how I think it will work. So at least the glazing and tiles wont crash into each other.

It would be a lot more sensible to build the house in the middle where it could be any and every shape I please, take account of the sun and existing trees and everything else. But... because its a conservation area and around listed a buildings, like a couple of decades ago someone, entirely without permission, built a slightly big shed and put horses in it. So now I'm only allowed to build my house where that shed was, which is in the corner right where my neighbours get pissed off and fence me in. Planning is such a mess. Especially as we need to build more houses at the rate we do and ideally environmentally friendly, its just such a gently caress you. Really needs someone to utterly shake it up. Thing is I'd prefer things stay as they are really, as bad as it is, imagine a bunch of tory bastards just ripping through the countryside? er. like even more so. Love your heating plan! You could always get a bigger boy in to put an unvented cylinder for your hot water on it when the exchange plate can't keep up.

That is the only aspect that causes me concern. I'm told it works... but really... a heat exchanger that takes water maybe only 60degrees c and transfers that to mains water on demand? pfft. Theres an option for an immersion heater too but that rather defeats the object. and I havent looked at it as to where it goes... on the whole heat store? surely pointless, so more likely somehow directly to the domestic hot water.

Underfloor cooling, will that work without causing issues with condensation and mold? I have opinions on firewood burners too. But you probably don't need a system made for norther sweden witth massiv e water tanks, where you make a giant fire 1-2 times a week in -20 weather. Still, a wood gasification boiler is a very effective way of using that firewood, though ideally they are coupled with a huge tank to really utilize them best. Possibly overkill for the UK climate.

But people seem to say it isn't really an issue in UK climates. The answer appears to be have a dew point sensor on the manifold as that is where it would be reached first and shut off/mix the water a bit warmer if it gets close, which it shouldnt, and have decent HVAC (which I'm having in each room) to keep relative humidity down. But it still looks pretty. The only slightly risky thing is what happens if theres a power cut and the pump can't run to cycle the water through the woodburner back boiler? It could get really hot, pressure increases and blows up. As bobby points out I already have the things blowing up angle covered so this is undesirable. Solution is the woodburner has a non electric temp sensor that dumps the tank to waste if it gets to I think 98degrees or something. Plus theres a direct cold water feed to it that can use mains pressure to cool the unit. Plus plus the plan is to have a big house battery so power cuts shouldn't be an issue, there would be time for the fire to die down before the pump ran out of juice.

There's places about. Haven't bought any for a couple of years ago I'm sure it's gone up since everything else has. Looks like maybe 100 quid for a bulk bag's worth, or more like £170 or more for kiln dried. I think I probably have a few winter's worth from site of trees I've felled though. Just bought a log splitter.

Plus theres 300quid of copper plumbing and at least same again for the specialist heat mixing pump to connect it so maybe like another grand really. I'm pretty sure I've got at least a grand worth's of logs already though. Although I did have to buy a chainsaw and splitter. And am about to build a log store to keep them dry.

Is there a specific reason you want ground source over air source heat pumps? I've been looking into them lately as I want one on my next house and found that while ground is a touch more efficient the only real advantage comes in that ground source works in (virtually) all cold temperatures. Realistically speaking though the temperature isn't likely to drop low enough for an air source to stop working

You can get cold-climate air-source heat pumps that work down to -25°C. I've been looking into them as I'd need one here in Ottawa where it does actually get down below -20C. Quite expensive though, and ground-source pumps can be 25-50% more efficient in terms of energy usage. Still, we're looking at getting an ASHP in combination with solar which would cover near all of our electric usage (net, for the year) so there's not that much point in spending the extra for a GSHP - yes technically it would allow us to get a smaller solar setup but it's cheaper to have a slightly larger solar install than it is to make it a bit smaller and pay for GSHP. If we did get a GSHP it'd need a vertical loop for us, which means drilling deep into the ground which is expensive. The cost would probably be about $25k CAD for the ground loop install (not including the actual heat pump itself and installation), which is about the full cost of a solar install we're looking at, if I pay somebody else to do it all. Mine was 1700€ installed, an ASHP that is rated down to -25, put on my garage. But when winter rolls around I sure am glad to have the ground exchange unit in the house.

I might be missing something, but what is that weather membrane on your roof affixed to? Do you have plywood sheathing or something on your trusses? How are you going to keep those tiles on your roof, some kind of mortar or glue or something?
