If you don't have nostalgia for it, I'd classify Dink Smallwood the same as I have Daggerfall, as a trip to a museum. Context of Dinl Smallwood, for me, was a prime example of a light shareware RPG with a sarcastic edge, something you'd find while browsing an old shareware site. Might be a tad edgy for this age, and even then I found the gameplay to be less than amazing.

Aye, the most I remember about it is that it was released as freeware some time after commercial box release. It always sent me for a loop that they'd just make it free when I saw it get a review page in a magazine.

Looks like I can get the definitive versions of all 3 Mafia games for $23. I’ve never played any of these games. Are they decent enough for that price?

It's a pretty solid price and you can do worse. Just be aware that they're slightly different beasts from the usual GTA clone fare. In particular, 1 is more realistic and challenging and 3 is a bit janky and repetitive but has its own distinct vibe. 2 is unremarkable and got butchered by publisher interference but otherwise is a more tame follow-up to the first game.

Mafia 2 has perhaps the most beautiful city an open world game will ever have. Incredibly distinct districts; skyscrapers, industrial, waterfront, residential to list only a few. The scale of everything fits perfectly. It’s honestly quite stunning. Almost as stunning as how you are never given any reason to interact with 90% of it.

I guess Bethesda has finally realized that every one and their mother owns a copy by now, so might as well see if people want a DRM-free double* dip. *could be triple or quadruple, I don't judge Mierenneuker fucked around with this message at 16:48 on Sep 29, 2022 |

Master of Magic Classic has a giveaway BTW https://www.gog.com/game/master_of_magic_classic Although apparently the current publisher is mostly using it as an advertisement for other stuff these days. Most of the install is made up by the launcher they added.

Is the stuff added in the Skyrim Anniversary edition worth a look or is it low effort modding that got Bethsofts seal of approval?
|
![]() |

It varies. There's a lot of cosmetic and weapon pack stuff, more player homes, horse armor of course...but there's also some meatier stuff. Like a whole fishing system w/ associated quests and loot. Very The Sims DLC tier stuff. Nothing that's going to reinvent the game for you if you're not already into Skyrim, but pure catnip if it's your Sims. Not necessarily low effort, just highly optional and debatably worth the extra money they're asking for it.

You can get Skyrim Special Edition without the Anniversary DLC (cheaper) but Special Edition is patched to the most recent version already (1.6.12). So mods have to be ready for that.

Good thing from GOG version: if you get the Anniversary Edition, the DLC pack is an optional installer or an optional install from GOG galaxy. The user has to select it instead of an automatic download.

I personally thought that most if not all of the anniversary content was awesome and well enough integrated into the game.

Huh, apparently GoG has put up an "enhanced" version of Emperor of the Fading Suns https://www.gog.com/en/game/emperor_of_the_fading_suns, presumably with a ton of bugfixes. It seems that if you own the original you'll get the updated version for free. Has anyone tried it yet and what do you think about it?

I only played around with it but I like that there is now a custom game where you can select a smaller galaxy (dark ages) or a larger one (lost galaxy). The smaller galaxy would be great for a pbem game.

For the last day of their Halloween sale, GOG is giving away Jazz Jackrabbit 2 for free. I played the poo poo out of the demo that came in one of those shareware CDs with 100 games back in the Windows 95/98 days (it and Duke Nukem II were the only real standouts). I wouldn't realize until decades later that the series was developed by Epic Games (and former SA forums poster CliffyB).

GOG Galaxy won't let me download my games for some reason. Whenever I select install the regular pop up doesn't appear and after some loading it just says "server problem." I've tried logging out, uninstalling and reinstalling, but nothing has worked. I can just download the non gog galaxy installers but It'd be nice to get galaxy working again.

That's basically been happening to everyone lately. Had to download something naturally from the store like a caveman this afternoon! Bigger thing is that the versions on the webstore may not be the most up-to-date, so you still have to run it through Galaxy once you've installed the game. But it ain't just you!

Gary Grigsby's World at War: A World Divided is now on GOG. This is not some great lost classic, like System Shock 2 or Wizardry 8, yet I don't think I've ever been more surprised to see a game on GOG. This game is so niche and it's by Slitherine, a company that does nothing but strategy games and strictly controls their IP. This is an improved version of World at War, and World Divided itself is over 15 years old. I still have my disc copy, but I remember how hard it was to get a copy in the pre-digital days, which is one reason that I'm so glad to see this. That said, I think that the asking price is too high. JustJeff88 fucked around with this message at 01:01 on Feb 7, 2023 |
