Devils Affricate posted:I hate when people say something "begs the question" when they really mean to say it raises the question. Begging the question means using circular logic. I read a book recently where every time the author had dialogue where someone used the phrase “case in point” he wrote it as “case and point” and it was maddening.

I only encounter this because I like to watch dashcam videos, but I hate when people refer to any kind of car collision as a "wreck" regardless of the level of damage. A tap on the bumper is not a car wreck. Call it a collision, an accident, or even call it a car crash if you want to be dramatic, but please don't call it a wreck if no vehicle has actually been wrecked.

CaptainSarcastic posted:The common confusion between things like "its" versus "it's," "who's" versus "whose," stuff like that. I am silently bothered by this too. The worst is when someone is talking about the correct usage of 'they're/their' and they slip in an incorrect 'it's'. It takes a bit of strength to hold my tongue instead of posting some trap poo poo like "proper grammar is its own reward." My best bud and I used to get in arguments all the time about some other common ones; I'd insist "all right" is two words or that "OK" is two letters, and he'd lose his mind over it and we'd rage at each other. I haven't actually cared about that poo poo in years, but because we have that rapport of pushing each others' buttons, sometimes I'll pedantically correct him over something that's absolutely and obviously wrong: "If we leave then, we'll have less time to set up when we get there." "Fewer time."

I didn't mind "addicting" until I heard someone actually try to argue that it was correct and apparently had been unaware of "addictive" and even tried suggesting it must have been a US/UK difference.
