nyt doesn't like me, but what is their argument that "popular trust in the supreme court is needed for it to uphold the rule of law"? Everything before that point in the headline is statistically accurate based on polls, of course, and I can envision what they'd like to conclude, but it seems a bit of a stretch to predicate any public servant's ability to uphold their oath of office upon the "trust" of a constituency. I think it's fairly accurate to claim we will see some rather interesting self-interpretations of their oaths: "I will administer justice without respect to persons".  You're telling me.

the circuit court decision seems effectively to be that the state can't be held accountable for arresting someone if they reasonably thought, or maybe someone somewhere could reasonably think, what he did was a crime. it follows the pretty widespread court decisions that find that being accused by the state of a criminal act as well as all the burdens and damages that go along with it, including many days imprisoned and tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars of court costs, are actually just nothing. the police can arrest you for any reason whatsoever and a district attorney, aided by the courts and the carceral justice system, can completely ruin your life as long as they don't eventually convict you. also if they do convict you then you were guilty and deserved all that.
