This Pilotwings 64 trailer is fantastic. Never played it before & super hyped.

Always was a strange omission from the Wii & Wii U virtual console.

Great, now I'm horny for Pilot Wings? What's next??

it's a fantastic game, paraglider and birdman are so chill. i used to spend HOURS just flying around in bridman looking for cool poo poo in the various maps.

also, like mario 64, it had a huge impact on what i thought video games could be back when it came out. the freedom felt like nothing else.

snes pilotwings is good but also much more blatantly a tech demo than 64. it's also ball-bustingly difficult. it is available on switch online.

whether you'd like snes pilotwings prolly depends on how you feel about mode 7. personally i love mode 7 but ymmv.

I wonder what caused it not to work on those. I do know games with camera modes that use a particular hardware feature to take a snapshot and then display or distort it in a little frame are apparently a bitch to emulate, and a lot of hang glider missions are about taking photos

I just want to smile. Just once. I'd like to just, one time, go to Disney World and smile like the other boys and girls.
I always liked OG Pilotwings much more than 64. The Light Plane music is one of my favorite video game tunes.

Do you have SNESflix/NSO? It's in the SNES library.

I never got an NSO subscription as there’s nothing on there I particularly want at the moment, good to know though

I took the octopath less travelered,

And it made one-eighth the difference.
I remember trying to buy PW64 on the Wii VC because my dad loved the original, but being disappointed that it wasn't actually on there. Luckily he liked Mario Kart 64 too.

At any rate, about drat time we got Pilotwings 64. Game owns and now my dad can play it on one of my sibling's Switches (since we all are splitting the upgraded version, mostly because my sister wants to play N64 games with her daughter).

Hell, I might give it another go myself.

Y and X map to c-left and c-down, which makes up two of your item slots in the Zeldas pretty accessible.

Holding down ZR also makes all the face buttons map to their corresponding c-direction, though I never found a good application for that in the Zelda games.

They've done what they could to make them accessible, though my real beef with the Zelda controls is that the N64 analog stick was a lot tighter. The biggest hassle is precision aiming with things like the bow because you can't gently nudge a modern analog stick the same way.

Yeah, Pilotwings 64 is the ultimate chill game (though some of the challenges are actually hard or annoying) but you go for that Birdman and just coast among the clouds with the porno rear end music that plays? Heaven. I was blown away at the scale of the game and the ability to fly around everywhere when it first game out, it was nothing I ever experienced because I was coming from the NES.

Edo Japan is basically proto-Undertale in that the pacifist and genocide routes radially change gameplay stuff so yeah, kinda. Also iirc there’s a super strong pair of shoes that I never found, I made my peace with beating Lord Iwami and the majin swordsman.

The Linke is a party I grudgingly accept exists, but I've learned enough about DDR-history I can't bring myself to trust a party that was once the SED, a party leading the corrupt state apparatus ...

 the original Super Mario Bros. also had an arcade version, according to Wikipedia. It's a lot more likely Chris played that one and just doesn't know there was an even older game.

I don't know what I was expecting, but this story is wild and I'm only like two hours in. I just fought the giant robot corpse harlequin in the area with haunting choral circus music and the game didn't even bother to rest on that because it had a new story direction to go immediately afterwards. Are all Nier games like this?

Thanks for this. It’s helpful. Seems a little less ideal but maybe ok.

Wish they’d just sell the fuckin n64 controllers in stores or Amazon but I guess Nintendo.

There’s only two but Nier Replicant is more gameplay whiplash than narratively, it really really likes to experiment with stuff like having a resident evil section, a bullet hell bit, and even a straight up adventure game part that’s all text.

The PS3/360 Nier was great in terms of similar music and vibes. The gameplay is better is Automata, but I preferred Nier’s later revelations.
