The only true rival to the USA who has steadily grown to achieve this position now watch a former empire make their last swing before fading into obscurity but can also ruin the whole plan with nukes

Kraftwerk posted:How are Ukrainian drones attacking these ships. Are those naval drones basically suicide drones like those Japanese midget submarines? The term "suicide drone" makes as much sense as calling cruise missiles "suicide rockets". It's such a strange term for a munition that hits a target and detonates as intended. In this case it's basically a very long range torpedo with advanced navigation. Sure, they travel on the surface of the water, but I bet they're trying to develop subsurface ones.

Those things look really unpleasant to drive. Like the 10 second clip of that thing pitching made me remember every time I've ever been seasick. Wonder if there is some way to do image stabilization/gimballing, and if that would improve targeting, or if you just get used to it.

Kraftwerk posted:How are Ukrainian drones attacking these ships. Are those naval drones basically suicide drones like those Japanese midget submarines? This is such a confusing question because the actual Japanese midget submarines were two man operated electric submarines launched from bigger submarines that fired two torpedoes at their targets. They were not actual suicide weapons, although the crew was very unlikely to return to home. Late in the war they modified torpedoes to have room for a human controller. These torpedoes were real suicide weapons. Drones are unmanned, therefore they have no similarity to either and it's misleading to talk about 'suicide' drones unless the drone operator shoots himself with a pistol after the attack.
|
# ? Oct 29, 2022 20:41 |

The 'suicide' is obviously in comparison to drones that don't blow themselves up. But yeah at that point there's not a huge distinction between 'suicide drone' and 'slow missile'.
