Caught Film Red, it was a bit incoherent in the first half hour or so but the reveal that everybody was just inhabiting a dream Uta sung for them put that into a different context, or at least made it somewhat more palatable. The big finale where Usopp/Yasopp direct The Straw Hats and the Red Hair Pirates to fight in unison in the dream and waking world was loving awesome.

Senor Pink's backstory is so over the top it goes from tragic to very silly.

I think what really sold it was that you've come to just expect weird characters in this story, so no one commenting on Senor Pink's outfits felt par the course. Then you get the back story and learn they did raise eyebrows to it, but ultimately understood and moved on. It's great nuance that Don Flamingo's family really was just that, and cared enough about each other to overlook such a goofy life choice.

I was just thinking about this in relation to Brûlée and Katakuri’s shared backstory, which is about a page and a half in total but recontextualizes both of them at the end of the arc in such a brilliant turn around that now you kinda like them both after our heroes just narrowly escaped getting murdered by them.

HA! HA! NICE! WHAT A TOOL!
Senor Pink felt like Oda making fun of himself but it somehow comes off as mean-spirited. Like the gag is that his disclosure of his backstory and franky crying is rote and formulaic but I don't think the series deserves that criticism given that backstories in this series arent just there to make us sad they illustrate the world and setting of OP.

Pointless backstory tragedy porn is something a lot of manga do but it made me feel bad that Oda was implying that OP does it.

Sometimes even if you would have a pretty good case, companies would just want to avoid any risk of lost time/money on a suit altogether.

Lawsuits can take a really long time, even seemingly open and shut cases. If Viz is up in court against those Zorro rights holders, that's potentially months that they could not publish One Piece. And yes, while the readers can just go to scans, the entire point of the digital Shonen Jump service is to offer official translations at the same time as the Japanese issues to create a convenient alternative to piracy. So it's really bad for them.
A belated comment, but apparently at the time of the original dub there actually was a (unrelated) lawsuit going on about Zorro and his copyright status. So 4kids and Viz took a look at that and went "not touching that' and just collectively made him Zolo in English products.

Then by the time of the Funi dub that had cleared up so he was Zoro there, while Viz is just weird about consistency so they stuck to Zolo forever.

Mean spirited? I didn't get that vibe at all. It was silly how excessive it is, and the whole thing was incredibly over the top, but One Piece is a story where "over the top" and "silly" are not at all considered bad things and they're definitely not mutually exclusive with sincere emotions.

If we were supposed to laugh at just how elaborately tragic Senor Pink's story was, we were also supposed to be sincerely crying at the same time. I know I had no issue feeling both things at the same time. It was just a whole ton of emotions.

One Piece is an incredibly sincere story. Even if there is a meta self-critique going on it's not going to conclude that the thing it's critiquing is just bad.

There's definitely an element of self-parody to Senor Pink's backstory, but I've never been able to determine whether I'm supposed to find it purely funny or appreciate it as tragic while still laughing about it.

I enjoy it, nevertheless.

The takeaway I got from Senor Pink was not to judge a book by its cover. Seeing this big baby dressed guy you assume his heroic acts of saving damsels from missiles and rescuing cats are just some Looney Tunes comedy skit, same with his strong sense of honor and pride standing still to let his opponent hit him since that's what they agreed to. By the time his backstory is over it hits you with a sledgehammer that this is a real person, with real character and motivations, his actions were pure and heroic, and it was you, the reader, who didn't believe in him just because of his looks. I think he's one of Oda's best written characters, with a short, pure and to-the-point character arc that teaches the reader a valuable unforgettable life lesson.

Red felt like an arc condensed into 2 hours, which was impressive despite the few nitpicks I had. This sounds down but I enjoyed it a lot, and my wife who hasn't read weekly since WCI went and started catching up.

Okay, but, if someone said "Look out! He's a Rubber Man!" with no other context what would you even do with that information?

The villagers love and respect Chouchou, and thus I respect them in turn.

"Not that I want to hear the details or anything" Hey gently caress you Luffy, I DO want to hear Nami's backstory!

Mayor Boodle is a stand-up guy. Also, Zoro is unkillable. Is him not dying to things that should make him hella dead something that has a magical explanation, or is he just super tough thanks to push-ups, sit-ups, and plenty of juice?

I guess I’ll go see Red this week since everyone seems to like it. The Sub showtimes seem more crowded than the Dub showtimes around here based on seat reservations. Do One Piece fans usually prefer the Sub? Feels like the opposite is usually the case with popular anime like Dragon Ball and MHA

The OP dub is good but fans are more likely to be into the sub in my experience. Part of that is that the dub had a fairly large episode deficit versus the sub until pretty recently, and it's still over 100 episodes behind. Also, there's just so many goddamn characters in OP that not everyone gets a great voice.
