To craft a 600 item you have to have the best materials for each piece, a food buff, all of the buffs you can get on your equipment and your faction has to control the town with the workbench you are using. I think that's all of it, but I might be wrong and there might be something else too.

Watch me try to laugh this title off like the dickbag I am.

I also hang out with racists.
the town owner also has to pay to enact the town buff for the specific type of crafting you are doing

and you only receive that buff if you own a house in that town

also you need the trophies, which a year ago was vastly more expensive than every other part of the process put together

THUNDERDOME LOSER
I bought this game on release and bounced off in hours, but I went back to run on a fresh start server and... I've been having fun? I'm sure it won't last much more after I hit 60 and all there's left to do is grind, but for now it's been ok.

There's definitely a lot to improve on, even beyond the need for more content. I'm looking forward to an actual first expansion that could really push the game into something great. And also dual pistols.

OPR is pretty fun, wish there was more than one map but at the same time you get to learn it inside out. I almost quit (when i thought about M1 to M10) before i figured out i could queue these 20v20 matches to get gear, money and expertise gains. Gotta say if i understand it correctly, how you progress your expertise is one of the dumbest things ive seen in a mmo. So the game will decide randomly for you which expertise level you specialize in first. It feels like a casino mechanic to get you to keep rolling that roulette. People running around in groups of 50 opening elite chests for some expertise unlocks, yikes.

You can get them in regular dungeons, but the most I've ever gotten at once in a normal dungeon is 50. If you haven't done all of the quests in the new zone you can get over 10000 by doing them all.

You can get 50-100 a pop per OPR match (cant remember exactly), which usually lasts like 20 minutes.

Its certainly fun for anyone who never played this to do the climb to 60, explore the map. The combat is fun, with a variety of weapons with skill-based tricks to each to try out. In particular, If youre into pvp, theres an arena type 20vs20 mode u can grind for money and loot at 60. Just queue from anywhere and get a pop-up, no need to really work hard at finding groups, etc... I play an offensive healer with a gravity axe skill that magnets other players to it, its fun to try to get that skill shot and time it with like 3 other nearby players i know grind other players to dust.

Happy to heal instances, though I haven't quite done anything mutated yet. Still new to the max level part of the game.

Also happy to make any of the insanely high ilvl low level weapons. I have an overabundance of epic mid level mats. They're basically like cheating.

The game's biggest issue hasn't really been the ratio of content per dollar, but rather if the game is worth the time investment it asks of you to experience all of that content.

The revamped starting experience has voice-acted questlines and provides a better tutorial/introduction to the game, and will provide ~ 10 hours of gameplay. After this, the time required to reach Level 60 has been dramatically shortened compared to launch, but still takes a significant amount of time depending on how efficiently you work to get there. Getting to Level 60 unlocks most of the game's content (PvP & PvE), but introduces a new secondary leveling system, Gear Score/Expertise. The time required to increase Gear Score has also been dramatically reduced, but being lower than the maximum level will put you at a disadvantage in the PvP game modes and will flat-out prevent you from participating in the highest-level PvE content, mutated Expeditions.

All of this is to say that yes, there's content in the game, but you may always feel like you haven't unlocked the "good" content yet, or that you're engaging with the content at a disadvantage until you complete long-term grinding. This is kind of a foundation of MMO's to some extent, and there seems to be a clear distinction between people who are willing to accept this gameplay loop/ramp and those who aren't. Whether it's worth $20 depends on whether you will be able to walk away from the game satisfied with the time you spent trying to figure everything out, or if you're more likely to feel like you wasted your money and time progressing a character you don't have any intention of coming back to.

If you decide to buy the game, know that your server selection is important, and the best source of information is https://nwdb.info/server-status. You want to join the highest-population server possible within your region if you want to have the best experience with group-related content (which is every bit of the game's endgame other than gathering/crafting). There's also a distinction now between Legacy & Fresh Start Servers, which are isolated from each other. At this point, I would recommend joining a Legacy Server, as AGS seems to have a long-term plan of transitioning all players back to the Legacy Servers eventually anyways, and you will likely no longer perceive much benefit from joining the Fresh Start Servers that were launched a little over 3 weeks ago.

The game is most definitely worth $20, for sure. The general experience from 0 to 60 is engaging and fun however the end-game content needs some more refinement and QoL features. Make sure you pick a fairly populated server on fresh start and understand that the majority of players are already at end-game at this point, so the world may seem a bit empty. I've dropped about 100 hours so far and I'm currently working on maxing my expertise, but to be honest, I'm considering quitting temporarily until they implement better QoL features. The dungeon group finder is garbage and we have no load outs for gear. It would also be nice if they made expeditions cross-server because it's extremely challenging to find a group to run Genesis when everyone is working on mutations at this point. I'm lazy, I just want to click a button and get a group together fairly quickly. OPR is a mixed bag of musket spam and people doing bare minimum to obtain their gypsum and wars are gatekept by larger guilds, so the PvP content leaves a lot to be desired.

For its flaws, New World is pretty solid and it's come a long way since launch.

I stopped closely following the game and posting in the old thread because I legitimately thought that AGS was borderline scamming players with their poor server management, which relied on players purchasing $15 server transfer tokens to move their character as needed to play the game how they wanted.

I now realize that I had fallen prey to the problem of assuming evil intent rather than incompetence.

As a primer, the recent Fresh Start Server launch immediately gave the game it's biggest boost in player count in the game's history, and Fresh Start players accounted for 2/3 of the game's population during it's first weekend:

As you can see, the impact was huge, but the game has seen that population steadily decline (although technically more slowly than the declines the game had at launch). At this point, most Fresh Start Servers now have low or medium populations, which makes it difficult for players to find groups for endgame content. Today, AGS announced that there are no plans for any of the new Fresh Start Servers with each other:

They also have still not implemented the ability for Fresh Start players to transfer to Legacy Servers, which is the only transfer option AGS has announced as eventually being offered.

This essentially guarantees that AGS will quickly lose the overwhelming majority of Fresh Start Players, and AGS isn't even letting players given them money in order to buy a life raft to a healthy, populated server.

I think this might be a sign that the New World team knows they won't exist after December 31st, but it might just be a continued misunderstanding of how to run a video game.

I really do think the people at AGS have their heart in the right place and actually really care about making New World into a good MMORPG. They just lack the experience and knowledge to make it happen, and are moving too slowly to meet the demands of the playerbase, which I realize is kinda a losing battle anyways.

In terms of an MMO it's probably not great that they haven't hit their J curve yet, but otoh that sort of thinking about MMO monetization comes from the days of monthly subscriptions. It's possible that periodic boosts like the above to drive box purchases followed by relatively rapid falloff is just fine. I mean if they sell a DLC and there's another big spike from everyone buying the DLC that'd be a shitload of money.

On the topic of the game's financial model, something that the community has given negative feedback about is this month's cosmetic store update in the game.

As a primer, their cosmetic store only updates once a month, and so far there's been virtually no recycling of content once it leaves the store. This month, however, they re-introduced a lot of older items from the past year, including many of the few popular skins they've released (the game has a well-earned reputation for most of their cosmetic skins being weird, avant-garde fashion couture stuff that players don't want to pay for).

Unfortunately, they reintroduced these items only as part of packaged bundles that sell for ~$75:
https://twitter.com/playnewworld/status/1596227687202553857

As you can imagine, players preferred the option of buying the things they wanted, at price points of $10-15, rather than only having the option to pay $75 for a pre-set group of previously sold items.

As a point of reference, in the US store the conversion rate is 1,000 New World Currencies for $1, with bonus amounts given if you buy the currency in bulk. For international currencies, this rate varies, but that's a separate issue (one that is another example of poor programming).

Edit: Also, the current seasonal event is broken for the game. It revolves around killing a giant turkey that spawns in several locations around the map, but the turkey stopped spawning after today's weekly reset. They're still working on fixing the issue.

I've been leveling all gathering and crafting skills at the same time alongside the combat. I'm at about 75-100.

I expect this isn't the most efficient. My idea was self sufficiency but it seems a bit harder than with say, gw2.

From what I can tell from Reddit comments crafting is maybe pointless and just a time/money sink.

I kinda hope not, coz while crafting and gathering aren't particularly deep, they do add some variety and roleplaying to the game.

Crafting requires an obscene amount of grind & resources, because of the investment required just to be able to craft GS 590+ pieces. This starts with just leveling up the trade skills, but extends to getting the trophies and tools for the skill. This has been somewhat amplified by the Brimstone Sands update, which introduced consumables that dramatically improve your odds of crafting gear with the perks you want, but these consumables are very expensive to buy or take a lot of time to grind yourself.

They improve the chance of creating a BiS item enough that it's still seen as mandatory for crafters to use, it just means you have to spend more time or resources for every individual item piece you craft. The analogy would be something like comparing a $1 lottery ticket with 1:1,0000 chance of hitting the jackpot, compared to a $100 lottery ticket with a 1:75 chance of hitting the same jackpot amount. I use this analogy because crafting in the game is really just a form of gambling, and while some people enjoy that aspect of it, I don't think it's worth investing in if you are trying to earn gold for your character.

What's funny is that because of the game's design, where each character can learn every skill/trade/craft without being locked into only specializing in 1 or 2 fields, most of the game's long-term players have managed to reach these high levels over the past year because it was 1 of the game's long-term gameplay loops that could always be worked towards regardless of server population. So even though it takes so much time and effort to make crafting worthwhile, it's also not particularly rare/valuable on the 14 Legacy Servers that have been around since the game's launch.

It's the same turkey as last year, the one that they seemed to introduce to the game as a mistake. Obviously, there's irony that this year they seem to have mistakenly removed it from the game.

One of the things that AGS has been egregiously bad about throughout New World's development is communication. That's what makes this morning's tweet so funny:
