No, really. The whole use case for VR headsets in the "office" is so Managers can cope with stupid peons enjoying a work/life balance by working from home now by getting remote workers back under their manager's thumb where they can be seen and "expected" to be working constantly, with their manager able to virtually look over their shoulder constantly like at the office. Or at their open windows remotely at any time. Sitting in a VR meeting with everyone just lets you watch them all at the same time and feel like you're managing them. On a $1,500USD headset per person. In a coming recession. On a device that no sane company would permit to hold secure data, or be let inside a development lap because of the way its tracking system models the observed playspace with its cameras. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8cg7tFZy_QA I heartily invite you to watch the Meta Connect 2022 event, because holy poo poo is it sad and yet immensely entertaining for how bad it is. There's a lot of Kickstarter pitch energy (from the kind you can tell is probably gonna not make goal), and the best highlight is the way the lie to the audience in various ways. The legs showcase is staged animation, and the whole "Woah, did you know legs add to IMMERSION?? What a new concept, I Mark Zuckerberg, am pioneering a solution for!" comes about 40 minutes after name-dropping VRChat. Also while there's some legitimately interesting new tech at the end, you can clearly see Mark co-opting someone else's work as his own.

The Awesomesaurus posted:https://twitter.com/realGeorgeHotz/status/1599970004593946625 OK, some thoughts. This is what we'd call an "interesting problem", and as everyone who's done research or computer science knows, that's a synonym for a "pretty difficult thing". You're kind of at the intersection of several different things. Obviously first of all you'll need a good search engine to be able to find data in the first place, and that's famously not super easy. Then, you'll need to do a bunch of natural language processing, because you're not just returning hits that seem to be related to the topic at hand, you need to process the data to form some kind of consensus about the results, and turn it into what sounds like real replies. Neither of these things are impossible. People have done them, and people are doing them. But your guy started this job by literally saying "hey can anyone do this thing for me? I'll try to get you hired as an intern if you can" and then "hey can anyone give me any research related to this topic" which are both big red flags. They kinda imply that he doesn't have a lot of domain knowledge, nor has he done any research by himself because he's asking people for relevant papers. So you're kinda starting at a pretty big disadvantage here. But then we get to the truly nutty part: he wants to beat Google. This whole thing started with a "what would it take to get you to use Twitter's search instead of Google's", and Google are kind of the kings of this kind of stuff. They literally built their company on this poo poo. Hell, they already offer a very similar product: if you ask Google's Voice Assistant a question, it tries to answer in a natural way. If you ask "hey Google, what is Little Big Horn famous for", it will say something like "Little Big Horn was the location of a large battle during the Great Sioux War and is known for Custer's Last Stand". So in essence we have a guy going "hey I'm a 95 pound nerd and I wanna beat 1986 era Mike Tyson at boxing... does anyone have a link to a research paper that explains what boxing is?" It's extremely dumb. E: and also lol at the whole "hey if anyone can do this thing I'll try to get you an internship". As with most "pretty difficult things" in computer science, if you're a person who can do the thing well, you probably already have a high paying job somewhere and might not be champing at the bit to jump on Captain Apartheid's Wild Ride. Hotz's support in the replies being filled with mass-produced shades-wearing ideas guys is funnier than it has any right to be. The most hosed part is that they've introduced this horrid live-at-work culture for no reason other than the manchild new boss wants it. It's never indicative of good management but it's at least understandable when the company is pushing to meet an announced release date or a contractual obligation. They visibly don't have this because Musk cut like 70% of the workforce. They're working on a bunch of short term impulse-driven projects, some of which (like the payment stuff) interact with data you absolutely don't want to fart out ASAP. These working conditions notoriously encourage rushed, ill-conceived products so I've got a huge tub of popcorn ready for the legal hellfire after the inevitable data breach.

Twitter search proposal: Don't do any of that and just make regular keyword search work. You know, the way at least 90% of people use search: type in a word, get a bunch of results containing that word. Done. what is the point of this dumb idea? Twitter search is not going to replace Google my man, you don't always need super complicated solutions. And stop asking others to do your homework for you

priznat posted:Yeah *most* crunch cycles are limited time duration to push a product out the door, but with this bizarre add new features/delete features/refactor features/remove the new features thing they have going on at twitter this seems like it would just be an endless cycle and that is loving depressing. Yeah let me point something else out about this. When companies operate under a 60-hour-week, nights-and-weekends, gotta-meet-a-deadline mode, it is for one of two reasons: 1) there is a market or regulatory date they must get a new product or feature out by or else they are dead, like for example a health insurance provider who must have their site live by the federal Open Enrollment date or else it misses all business for that year Or far more commonly, 2) the company is a startup and they will run out of investor money by X date so they have to get the product out the door (or attract another round of venture capital from some gullible rich rube) before everyone's paychecks bounce. Neither is the case for Twitter. It is under no externally or internally imposed product-related deadlines, and it is privately funded by a dude who is capable of spending infinite money on it. It isn't trying to accomplish anything. Elton just wants it to be "his vision" whatever the gently caress that is, and he wants it yesterday. And he's apparently not even willing to entertain reasonable timelines for feature delivery, which in any normal company would be on the order of 3-6 weeks or up to 6 months depending on how much they're changing. Transforming the entire nature of the product to be a payment processor or search engine or whatever the gently caress, that's a years-long endeavor. But Elon apparently thinks this is something that can be done overnight, after firing everybody, and if it isn't getting done overnight it's because the devs aren't literally THERE overnight. And if it's still too ambitious he'll just fire more of them until they give him the right answer. But every company that operates under that kind of schedule is doing it TEMPORARILY, and that's what they tell their employees and prospective employees. Otherwise nobody will loving want to work for them. If a company were to court me by saying "Yeah we work 60 hour weeks and we sleep in the office, we work hard and play h—well actually no we just work hard ahaha" I would just click X on the zoom meeting without a word. That kind of pitch doesn't even get past the recruiter-wants-to-represent-you stage. They're trying to look attractive. The market is such that companies have to compete for talent! They have to make working there look rewarding and fun! They can say "We need to get our prototype on the road in 3 months because that's what we're funded for, but if we succeed we'll own the market!!" and that is a legitimate pitch, sometimes that actually works out! So is "You get a lot of stock options but that's OK because we plan to IPO in six months and then you'll be a millionaire!" That happens too! (It happened a loving lot in around 1999.) But those carrots are how you get people to endure the stick. You don't hire people by saying "lol you get the stick, and if you don't like it, you get more stick" The "startup lifestyle" is not anybody's idea of an ideal work environment on an ongoing basis with no end in sight. It's understood to be the way you do something if you HAVE to, BRIEFLY. And if you're going to attract people to it you're making it worth people's while with stuff like massage tables and bumper pool and free meals, because everyone understands that it's a lovely situation. Nobody volunteers for a 24/7 job just because they love working for Elon Musk and telling their parents at Thanksgiving that they work for Elon Musk. A crunch cycle is a CYCLE. It's not a perpetual state of being. It's something you fight your way through because there's a pot of gold at the end, or else you decide you don't need that poo poo in your life and you have a normal job where you can clock out and see your family and the company completely understands because that's how it keeps employees.
