Yes, your account is universal. As long as you actually have bought the game on the platform, you can log-in and be exactly where you were on any other platform (though you'll have to assign buttons/settings individually per platform)

For those of you who don't understand, Cid of the Lufaine, an integral character in Dissidia and hence to FF1, was trapped in the body of a Moogle by a vengeful Shinryu when he broke their contract of endless conflict to make both Shinryu and Chaos stronger and was also imprisoned in a pocket alternate dimension where Chaos went mad and destroyed the world. Dissidia Duodecim's postgame is solving that.

Question regarding the time loop in FF1:

The King tells the Warriors that Garland was once his best knight. Which, was true. But the ending of SoP makes it seem like Garland just sat in the throne for 2000 years until he kidnaps the princess. So does that imply that Garland sits at his throne for like 1990 years, joins the King’s guard to gain his trust and dick around for a while before carrying out his plan?

Uh... Kupo?

I took it to assume Garland sat around protecting the kingdom for 2000 years. He wasn't everywhere all the time, so they still had their own troops/cops/whatever, but if like a dragon appeared and threatened the kingdom Garland would probably go resolve the situation. Until Garland decides to kidnap Sarah.

You know, for a series, franchise, and company that absolutely loves to do multiversal mash-ups of each game’s characters, from all the mobile games being literally “just make your party from all the best ff dudes you like” to the entire concept and execution of dissidia, to world of final fantasy, to theatrythm, to the kingdom hearts franchise as a concept, to SoP’s underlying narrative, to the FFXIV raids and on and on and on and on and ON you think they’d just do the drat thing and actually put out a mainline FF title that’s Into the FFverse or some poo poo. It’s weird they keep coming back to this concept in so many different ways with so many different types of games and never give it the AAA treatment, either relegating it to side games or in the background of other narratives in FFXIV and the KH series’ cases.

I'm on the other side and like that each final fantasy is its entirely own thing and, at best, only hints at them being able to be connected in any way. Specifically, Gilgamesh being the thread that connects them.

I can honestly take it either way, but into the spider-verse loving ruled and if you read American comics Jonathan Hickman’s A/NA run leading into Secret Wars 2015 for Marvel had them dealing with fighting off the imminent incursions of other universes and alternate versions of the Avengers, and was some of the best storytelling Marvel has ever done. I think it can definitely be a good way to sort of cut to the essence of each games’ characters and the inherent conflict of “I’m you but just slightly different” creates interesting textural drama without even really trying. Plus, think of all the good interactions that could happen: Lightning and Cloud uncomfortably attempting to talk to each other and not bring up their obvious similarities, Tidus annoying the ever living hell out of everyone else but especially the straight men protags like Cecil, Balthier hitting on every single woman in the FF franchise, Rydia and Terra and all the other special magical princess character archetypes commiserating with each other. A lot of the interactions just write themselves to be honest.

Either way I’m fine if Square doesn’t do that, but even beyond the financial motivations like the reason they do it with every mobile/gacha game they clearly as a company are interested in this concept, they just never fully realize it and at most shove it into KH. It’s just weird they keep sort of teasing this idea and just never fully commit to it, either do it or don’t.

It's because it would suck and be bad and they leave the cross over joke stuff to side games that can do more with them and work on cool new stories for the big big games. Seems p. Obvious op.

I can't say I'm a fan of Zack's new mullet.

For some reason my brain actually likes these extremely repetitive bite-sized missions. Gotta fill out the log. I have a feeling that the optional end-game content is going to require somehow fusing to get super high attack/magic stats (which I can't think of any non-tedious way to do), though. In normal play the non-HP stat-boosting items seem pretty useless, since they give values too low to matter (which I think you could hypothetically get them very high through grinding out a ton of stat boost items and fusing).

Fair point. To be clear: I’m fine either way, although I personally think a really incredible writer (like Yoshi-P or Yoko Taro) could actually spin some real narrative gold out of the concept, I’m totally fine with them putting up these super high walls around each game and say that they’re their own thing and no crossover besides like Easter eggs or jokes are gonna happen. Want Gilgamesh to appear in every game? Want Cid to own an airship and usually be some old dude helping the party? Okay sure yeah whatever. That’s fun. What I don’t like is their legions of half-steps like with KH/SoP/Dissidia/World of FF where they sort of intimate the thing you’d want without actually committing to it. That’s the worst of all worlds, where it’s these more involved things than cameos or jokes but not actually going for it.

FF Type-0: So this downtime mechanic is an interesting idea but sometimes it feels like I'm not sure what to do to spend it. I figured it out anyway, of course.

Type-0's entire thing seems to be "interesting idea, very questionable implementation".

Story wise, we've been pushing the Militesi out of Dominion territory and reclaiming strongholds. The Sabotage mission I just did was pretty cool. Cid is displeased with the current l'Cie, and it sounds like he's got another waiting in the wings, probably because the Militesi now control both their own Crystal and the Black Tortoise Crystal. This is very ominous. Interested to see where the story goes.

Despite the questionable implementation, I do think the game does an adequate job of capturing the feel of fantasy military missions, and makes Akademia feel like a real place full of people.

Basically, every post I make about this is "Type-0 Deserved Better", repeated ad infinitum, forever.

EDIT: It is also fun and cool that you get to play as the Eidolons when you summon them.

I'm curious, FrostyPox, how are you playing Type-0? Apparently the HD version on Steam just straight-up doesn't work for most people, so I'm curious.

And yeah, 'Type-0 deserved better' is kinda the long and short of my brief experience trying it, too. Every single idea it has is cool, and it all deserves better than being in Type-0 because Type-0 mostly fumbles them.

What are the best Final Fantasy-like games that are not actually Final Fantasy? Mostly I'm thinking about the way FF settings (at least from, say, 4 to 12) tend to be original, have a cast of different characters that feel like more than stereotypes, have gameplay that's decent but not particularly difficult, and stories that are not rear end.

Surprisingly such games seem like they're pretty thin on the ground. Back on the 360 there was Lost Odyssey, and Chained Echoes seems nice as an indie game now.

The problem with that question is that FF games are in my opinion super idiosyncratic with this sort of shared internal language specific to them, with specific markers that only FF games really have: spell names, the sort of cadence of their dialog, character archetypes, and repeated themes of confronting/averting fate usually by fighting off some otherworldly god. It’s not that I’m saying FF games are like too special and awesome to be replicated, but games that are ostensibly in the same sort of genre or wheelhouse - like, say, Persona - don’t texturally feel anything like an FF game because it has this weird singular sort of game feel all its own. It’s also why I’d argue FF games feel like FF games despite ostensibly having wildly different genres, styles, tones, settings, etc - they all share this textural makeup specific to FF that can’t really be replicated. That’s the secret sauce as it were.

On the other hand the FF games are all so different and cross so many different genres that it’s like bordering on impossible to say what an FF-like is. Like, trails of cold steel is this weird high tech combined with low fantasy using what is essentially a materia system and the plot dovetails into dealing with weird political intrigue, and it literally has a snowboarding mini game, but is it anything like FF7? No, not really.

The only exceptions to this rule are basically just rip-offs, where it’s a game just trying to ape final fantasy and has nothing particularly interesting or insightful to say, and just wants to be “more of that”. Lost Odyssey is a good example of that, where if it didn’t have the thousand years of dreams it’d be a 3d clone of FF4 and has basically nothing going for it. Most notably of those are the Bravely and Octopath series, and to a lesser extent triangle strategy, which feel like completely soulless carbon copies of FF games with no original ideas and barely any story to them, all awfully written with paper thin characterization.
