even if you were born in 2003 or something i have no idea how you could have never heard of the matrix? it had all sorts of sequels and remakes and what not. plus, keanu. had they not heard of john wick? how could you know john wick and not know about his most famous past work?

This was before the new one came out so yea much more likely they'd heard of it after that.

What it comes down to is that some people just have almost no interest in movies, especially today with all of the entertainment options we have. It's not like it was in the past where movies were unavoidable, a kid today can just come home from school or sit there on a Saturday and stream the exact thing they know they like or play one of the thousand video games they have access to. No flipping around on cable t.v. or browsing video rental shelves. And there's a momentum to that, by the time these people are in their 20s they just have no relationship with movies whatsoever and at that point it's probably not going to change, I know people who maybe watch 1 or 2 movies a year at most.

To be honest I can understand not knowing about The Matrix considering how much of a backlash the second and especially third movie garnished for being underwhelming.

The first one was lightning in a bottle, with a (self contained) story that kept people guessing for years, and new special effects. To top it off, it came out around the time DVD was moving into everyone's living rooms, so it became a must have DVD. Everything about it just felt like the future.

By the time the sequels came out, just about everything had become worn out, and the story was meh, as a follow up. It really seemed to have killed any talk about The Matrix overnight.

Some people just don’t care about film. They like movies but they don’t invest like us weirdos. My roommate rarely watches anything that’s not currently in theaters or just came to streaming. I had to show him a bunch of my faves from 12 Angry Men to Big Trouble in Little China. My one friend refuses to watch Jurassic Park claiming they already know they won’t like it so they won’t give it a shot. That one baffles me. And a former coworker told me he knew a kid who refused to watch movies made before they were born. And like others have said, there’s so much stuff out there now, not just movies but YouTube and Twitch and streaming shows and a million reruns available at a moments notice, there’s little incentive to seek stuff if you don’t know about it already. So I think it’s our civic duty if we know these kinds of people is to sit them down and show them 4k restorations of some truly bizarre poo poo in our collections.

yea, i get that. and i'm not a huge movie-watcher or anything. but i guess it's my age that suggests to me keanu is more than a film star? more like he's embedded into broader culture. like, there's tons of memes with him. he's done tons of charity. he's been a sex symbol for decades. seems like it would be hard to ignore him, but...i guess i'm wrong.

he's not tom cruise, who i imagine almost everyone's heard of, but he's not far below in my head.

Keanu kinda had a weird career trajectory. He was huge from the mid 90s up to about 2005. After that he started to go for smaller films and some direct to video stuff until John Wick became and unexpected hit. After that, he’s been getting back up but he’s still not back to the top. He’s like right between A-list and B-list now.

I think people are definitely aware of Keanu in general, they know who he is. The broader cultural impact of an A-lister I think leads to a general awareness but not necessarily to people actually sitting down and watching their back catalogue. I've definitely observed that in some movie reaction videos I've watched, people will say something like "Ohhh cool this is a Keanu Reeves movie, I like Keanu Reeves! Can't think of a movie I've actually seen him in, but he seems like a cool guy!"

I watched that Texas Chainsaw Massacre UHD last night, it looks great. I had to upgrade because its one of my favorites of all time so it was going to happen regardless even if the Blu looked great as well. Probably not a necessary upgrade for those that arent rabid fans and feel happy with their blu-ray, but if you're in it like me then you will want to regrab it. Sally's eyeball shots in 4K with Dolby Vision are exquisite.

The Texas Chainsaw UHD was a no-brainer for me because I'd actually never owned the movie on any format before this. I think it's because that relatively recent restoration was pretty widely available to stream, regardless though this is a case where my patience was rewarded.

There's also the (deserved apparently?) deification of Keanu Reeves as some kind of buddhist monk saint that has made his cultural impact eclipse his work in some ways.

God, that reminds me of the arduous process of figuring out who the famous actor my mom had seen on PBS was. She couldn’t remember his name, or the names of any of his movies. Eventually we figured out it was Danny Glover at which point my mom was able to confirm she had never seen any of his movies.

It's the first month in a bit where I have seen almost none of the releases before, main or partner

Calvaire, aka The Ordeal, is a New French Extremity release that's had iffy availability (never been on streaming, had one US physical media release ever pre-this and it was a 2006 DVD). I'm thinking about giving that a go because NFE films have been more hits than misses with me and that one in particular I've been wanting to see for a while

Hypochondriac (2022) is the only release I've seen and I really liked it. Slow-burn psychological horror about a gay man losing function of his body while being haunted by the physical manifestation of his childhood trauma triggered by the unexpected return of his mom. Solid directorial debut from queer director Addison Heimann. It's free to watch with ads on Tubi if one's on the fence about if it's worth spending money on

Only thing I absolutely know I'm getting is the Carlos Enrique Taboada boxset, that looks like it's gonna rule. 3 Mexican supernatural horror films

I rewatch movies just as much as I watch new stuff. If I really added it all up I probably have something like 40 or 50 movies in my collection that pretty much get watched every single year. And many more that I rewatch semi-often, like once every 3-5 years.

I'm trying to come up with a rough estimate for how many movies I watch per year these days. I was joking about the 1 to 2 movies thing, sometimes it feels that way if I go an entire weekend without seeing a movie, but I'd say I average roughly one movie a weekend? But then October comes, and I watch somewhere between 20-30 movies, and probably 15-ish the month before. If I really had to guess, I'd say I watch anywhere from 60 to 80+ movies every year, whether or not they're new to me.
