3D Megadoodoo posted:Tiles can be flipped over. Yeah, in the way that anything can be flipped over. Tiles tend to be rough on one side for better adhesion and smooth on the other for aesthetics, comfort, and cleanability.

3D Megadoodoo posted:Tiles can be flipped over. In this physical world, though, ceramic wall or floor tiles have glazing on one side and the other side is super coarse to ensure that they stick to the mortar. Nevertheless I don't think that the mathematicians found this out by manufacturing actual tiles of different shapes and then seeing where that leads them. Though I haven't read the article so it might as well be true. But cutting weird shaped tiles will be a pain in the arse. (The answer is to not cut them, you just continue tiling the infinite plane.)

I am still pondering the under-counter lighting. I guess it does get pretty dark in the cupboard under the sink.

If the main light is in the center, then your own stupid body casts a shadow on the counter. More lighting is cool and good.

Figured out why the thermostat did nothing and none of the wires to it were live: they ran the cable for it but never connected the other end to the timer/control unit As I think I posted before, the previous owner was the first one and the structure of this house is actually pretty drat good, but there are mysterious finish issues we keep finding like this where you think "how did you live here for 8 years and never think 'gee I wonder why the thermostat does nothing?'" Also they redid the entire downstairs floor in tiles that were reasonably well laid but are like 150mm by 45mm and they used white grout on a floor jfc. It looks fine but god is it inconsistently coloured now

I'm guessing they had a fancier thermostat they took with them and slapped a cheaper unit on the wall when they moved. "poo poo, where do these wires go...whatever, its the next guy's problem now."

No, they were just idiots. Or more accurately I think, they had zero practical knowledge of anything. They probably didn't even know that the thermostat wasn't doing anything (a placebo thermostat is not a bad idea though tbh). These are the same people that lived with the front door lock not engaging unless you heavily pushed/pulled it closed because they never thought to get a screwdriver and just adjust the cams on the keep by about a half turn. Or get the garage door runners greased so it didn't squeal when opened. There's a lot of this stuff. Just weird minor things where you think "how did you live with X for 8 years?"

A shockingly large percentage of people can't even use a screwdriver properly, so connecting the dots from squeaky garage door to greasing the track might as well be splitting an atom. We're all outliers here.

My cousin just bought the house they were renting for like a decade and for the first time ever they are going around checking windows and insulation to get their heating bills down. When it was a rental, it was what it was. But now that it's theirs! (The landlord they bought it from lived next door and was awesome about maintenance and the inspection didn't find anything wrong with the place.)

I have personally witnessed a kitchen drawer that jumps off track, and then being used continuously, with force, until the track cuts through the bottom of the drawer. On more than one occasion.
