The BB crew went around stealing fruits that would give them quick and easy power-ups but it ultimately isn't going to be enough to beat the Strawhats, who actually put in the effort to make their weird fighting styles work.

Oda has actually been pretty specific about the water from pretty early on. If any part of the body is submerged in standing water, the user is unable to use their powers (except when the powers are a permanent change to the body, like Luffy), and they are immobilized when they're more than half submerged.

Not sure why Blackbeard thinks the WG would give him a position again after he betrayed them last time. One possibility is that he doesn’t actually think they will; it’s just an opening offer to make what he actually wants in return for a hostage seem more reasonable.

That's a valuable piece to have under blackbeard's control if nothing else. It's the sort of thing that could start a global war too. So maybe that's how its going to happen.

Thinking about that Garp punch at the end of the chapter makes me think how (earlier story arc) the rank-and-file marines must have felt seeing what they probably assumed was a legitimate one-hit KO of Garp by a rookie like Straw Hat Luffy at Marineford. Then again, that was a pretty wild and crazy time, they saw some poo poo there that day.

So thinking over this chapter... where the heck is this going to go next? This feels like the Shanks vs Kid setup where I couldn't imagine Kid doing anything to Shanks, but I felt that it was way too early in the story for Kid to actually go down after all he had been built up. Turns out one of my fundamental assumptions was off in that case and Kid was not being built up as a rival for Luffy, but for the absolutely highest level failed foil. He may yet have a role, but it's not to parallel Luffy any more. So what's going to happen with the story here? And not just here in this battle, which seems like Garp kind of has in the bag, but in this conflict. Garp can't just come in and gently caress up Blackbeard with impunity, can he? Sure, with the way the story is going, Blackbeard is still on the rise as the final antagonist, and Garp's victory will have to be mitigated by an even greater success by Blackbeard, right? I suppose Blackbeard has so many irons in the fire that he could just get a completely unrelated victory, but narritively it feels like this should have consequences for Garp- the cool old mentor's role in the story isn't to happily retire- but I really can't see the Blackbeard pirates as they are being able to really stand up against him. I feel like, as with Kid vs Shanks, there's got to be some assumption I'm making which is completely wrong, and I look forward to having my jaw drop for some reason I can't foresee at some point in the future! Right after the Paramount War he attempted to trade Bonney for a Warship, but ran when he realized it was not a trading force coming but a capture force lead by Sakazuki.

Blackbeard cherry-picked Devil Fruits for the rest of his crew, but those four were chosen after they survived the Level 6 Impel Down Battle Royale. The rest of his crew is still getting used to their new powers, but the four of them were already established pirates and clearly capable of using their powers to their full (and lethal) extent.
