He also mentions the trick of watching a Kubrick film with the sound off to just get the flow of the shots and pace. If you watch too much you end up noticing things otherwise, like aha! He's moved in close with a wide angle because the character is disorientated, or wants the character to appear unhinged. A lot of time spent looking at peoples noses on closeups to try and gauge the type of lenses people are using. algebra testes fucked around with this message at 11:45 on Jan 17, 2023 |

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6YzeWMhS5CE Forum alumni K. Waste just released a video essay primarily on a 1996 documentary by Hirokazu Kore-eda, but also on "the various persuasive and inherently manipulative techniques" that go into producing documentaries. It presents some good thoughts to keep in mind for some other youtube essays, as well.

David F. Sandberg goes through some of his methods of previsualization for Shazam 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IP-Vaqq91dA While it's interesting to see and really cool that he's able to be this direct about what he wants (especially compared to other directors who have no idea how to communicate their intent on large-scale VFX sequences), I worked on the movie and never saw any of this. We always based our work on the actual CG previs done by another company, and I guess they were the ones who saw Sandberg's little animatics. But even if a Director wants to, it's very rare that they communicate with artists directly - there's at least two or three layers of supervisors that their feedback gets filtered through before it hits an artist. Sometimes this is a defense mechanism - some directors can be really rude (especially if they're frustrated because they're unable to effectively communicate what they want), and having an artist directly witness their work getting trashed live can be really demoralizing. But sometimes it's a game of telephone, where everyone down the line interprets the note slightly differently and something that should take one or two passes ends up taking five or six instead.

I did another video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r6MOz2M_Gvs What starts as an iteration on the cartoon giant robot formula takes a hard left turn midway through when the show reveals a complex system of feudalism and racial slavery which underpins the alien invader's society. Deciding that its not enough to only protect the Earth, the protagonists join the revolution of laborers and plot to overthrow the monarchy. It's a show that's a clear influence on the later Gundam, and through a weird confluence of events would become wildly popular in the Philippians. I honestly don't know if or how much any of this appeals to the folks here. I know CD has a handful of old Ultraman and Kamen Rider fans from talk in the Godzilla thread, but even if there are similarities, kid's robot cartoons aren't quite the same thing. However, Toei had the video delisted for copyright infringement and I went through enough trouble getting it back up that I'm absolutely telling loving everyone about it.

I Like Internet Video Essays way more than I should. Thanks for all the suggestions, some of These are great. I think discontinued channel every frame a painting is goat and should be linked in this Thread: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCjFqcJQXGZ6T6sxyFB-5i6A Also there are actual, cinema released Video Essays by filmmakers, some of which are very good. I can recommend Sans Soleil and Los Angeles plays itself, but Im No expert on these either. The Internet Historian example is interesting. In addition to the plagiarism everyone else's presentation is really low effort. Everything they do is to the end of churning out videos as fast a possible. But Man in Cave actually has a lot of effort put in on the visual side. drat, that section predicting how language learning algorithms are going to be used to obfuscate this kind of thing and make it harder to detect was grim. I imagine a lot of his other videos are similar -- just kinda regurgitating a lot of unsourced stuff as a foundation to add jokes and animation to, which is also not good -- but actually copying/rearranging prose and narrative devices really steps into indefensible territory.
