So here's a quasi-cryptid sighting I was wondering if anyone here had any insights on. A friend of mine is transcribing letters from one of his family members who had been a Connecticut soldier in the US Civil War. In one letter home, he wrote about seeing baboons on Tybee Island in Georgia. I'm trying to figure out what he could have seen (other than the earliest recorded Skunk Ape sighting, of course).

There's been reports of baboon-like monkeys in the Appalachians region (Tennessee, Kentucky and up through Virginia) since at least the 1920s and 30s: https://cryptidz.fandom.com/wiki/Devil_Monkeys

Coincidentally enough, St Catherine's island just to the south of Tybee island is currently the permanent home to a colony of lemurs and Morgan Island just to the north is home to 4,000 wild rhesus monkeys but those colonies were deliberately created in recent times

There was a thriving trade importing exotic pets such as monkeys and parrots into the US in the mid 19th century: https://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/the-monkeys-and-parrots-caught-up-in-the-california-gold-rush-180980236/

Oh, it seems very much like something ginned up by a bunch of teens from the last time I looked into it. Though I will say that it is a really weird Chuck E. Cheese - it’s got multiple floors, it’s hard to keep an eye on your kids, and feels especially run-down.

Hey, I just sent an article to a mate about the Bunyips that live in the swamps right next to him today!

The Haunted Swamp: The Mystery of the Hexham Bunyip

Sent it as a joke, but it's actually a pretty interesting historical article based on the diaries of a local living in the area around the 1870-1900's, and includes other research into historical thoughts and misunderstandings about bunyips by Europeans at the time.

Anyway if my mate gets ate by a bunyip I'll let you all know!

While we're on the topic of Australian cryptids, scientists have announced that drop bears were once a completely real* animal: https://theconversation.com/these-giant-drop-bears-with-opposable-thumbs-once-scaled-trees-in-australia-but-how-did-they-grow-so-huge-205117

* Or there at least used to exist a large arborial marsupial which closely resembled a huge koala and maybe fell out of trees sometimes so everyone is calling it a drop bear because that's pretty funny

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nimbadon

They're the largest arborial marsupials so far discovered, growing at least 1m long and weighed up to 70kg which is around the size of a small sun bear.

I mean even if they're not trying to eat you having a 70kg weight dropped on you from leaf height of a lot of Australian trees is going to leave you having not a great day.

Also drop bears are currently a real animal! Stop talking nonsense. One of my mates was ate by one of them the other day when he went out side for a smoko. They he ate the rest of his family cos it had the taste for blood and that's just how the get.

It's a real shame that thylacoleo carnifex (marsupial lion/pouched lion) didn't take off in cryptozoology circles like the thylacine (marsupial wolf/Tasmanian tiger) has, there's been reports of panther-like creatures in the Australian bush for well over 100 years and you'd think it would really fit the bill. It was real! It was here! It was exactly panther-shaped!

Some of the paleo-art reconstructions make it look pretty cool and badass :black101::

..... but most of the time it ends up looking like a goofy goober :sweatdrop:

The current state of panther sighting in Australia isn't great, here's a guy who grew up in Africa (which somehow makes him an expert on big cats) who had a sighting down on the Vic southern coast of an animal which he swears up and down was the size of a cheetah except stockier. Not only that, it was walking down main street so there was CCTV footage of it!! Irrefutable evidence!!!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LjE7qsn-QGE

.... except then you get to see the footage and it's clearly a domestic cat which is way way smaller than a cheetah and is easily walking underneath some pretty low park benches. You can check on google street view that those benches are definitely not cheetah-height

Lol, that's nuts. I read a scifi novel a while back that involved secret underground installations and tunnels starting around the US Southwest and connecting to at least the Midwest, which involved some type of secret extraterritorial overlords, human experimentation, and high tech military buildup down there. I had a good laugh at it, then later found out that it came basically verbatim from ideas some part of the tinfoil hat crowd believes. I don't think I ever saw anything like this scaled up to the whole world, though.

Look everyone knows, like most people, the aliens are pissed at the state of Nevada and wants vengeance. Somewhat because of Area 51 stuff, but mostly just because it is universally consider an offense to conscious life.

I mean once they lay waste to Nevada they'll probably just leave.
