yeah i think skypeia to thriller bark was the most consistent run for the anime

In that stretch is Enies Lobby, which has multiple consecutive episodes that take place over the course of about 10 seconds while the Straw Hats are falling in midair

Thriller Bark was actually when I dropped the anime for adding still frames and extended sound effects (running, gasping) dragging every action out so long. But that might not have been much worse than things had been, I just read the whole manga while the anime was still in Water 7 so Thriller Bark was the first full arc I had read before I watched it. It's such a bad experience.

Same, it was just unbearable.

Which sucked because I really enjoyed Thriller Bark in the manga, but the anime really did not do it justice. Honestly, even most of the "good" bits from the anime that get posted here are agonizingly slow compared to the old anime, or even the average normal anime.

It's one thing to have filler you can just skip but it's a real shame when scenes are paced absurdly in order to pad out a chapter (or even less) into a whole episode. I know about One Pace but it seems like they should go back and re-edit some of the older arcs officially

I found the Ennis Lobby filler stuff way more egregious than the Thrillerbark stuff. It wasn't that dragged out and it was better than detective Luffy in the middle ages.

I do have a theory that people generally find their breaking point for the filler shenanigans at either the place where they caught up to the manga(post Water 7), or at/right after Marineford. Everything before Marineford is honestly not that noticeable if you're getting the story for the first time, and the drawn out to the point of actually destroying the scene inserts didn't really happen until the New World. If you leave aside the Bleach style filler of Ennis Lobby, Marineford is the first time that the filler seriously starts to affect the story. Going by the anime, the island of Marineford is approximately 4 marathons from harbor to execution platform, and Luffy has developed a verbal tic of screaming ACE.

Wano’s been a big improvement in terms of fight scenes at least (and extra stuff like Queen’s dance party) but the pacing still sucks

The musical number in Whole Cake was pretty good as well

I think Luffy can read, but he's just not interested in it.

Oda's stated that everyone (except Luffy) keeps books in the Thousand Sunny, even Zoro. Though Zoro doesn't really read as much as look at them (see: below).

Nami and Robin and Chopper are probably the most well-read in the crew given their respective fields (Chopper even asks for money to buy books in Water Seven), Sanji probably reads cookbooks and I dunno, guides to ingredients. Ussop's a big fan of grand stories and also probably reads engineering books. Franky probably reads engineering books too. Jimbei joined afterwards but he's probably well-read too, or at the very least regularly reads the news since he's big on staying informed on world events. Brook probably reads too, given that he used to be a bigshot in an army.

Oda expands on it on an SBS answer.

quote:

D: "In Whereupon We Ask Odacchi A Question". [The letter writer is sounding like Sweet Pea, so this is my approximation of how Sweet Pea would sound like in English. It goes on through the letter. -N] Inside Sunny-go, there's a splendid bookshelf, isn't there? And in that bookshelf are "everyone except Luffy's books"! But! There's one person in the crew that I simply cannot imagine reading. And that is... Zoro. What sort of books could he possibly be reading? Please tell me!

O: It certainly does seem like books don't suit Zoro very well. But rather than reading books, you could say that he views them. Diagrams from books on martial arts, illustrations of weapons, collections of high-level bounties and so on. He looks at them.

Sanji probably reads a bunch of Chopper's books since he's big on ensuring proper nutrients for each of the crew members. If they had the internet, Sanji's professional search history would probably be a weird combination of bodybuilding.com and various nutritional science sites plus the normal cooking stuff.

A boombox is not a toy!

Re-reading the series, because "why not" during a break, and noticed a few things:

- From a few pages back, but Cobra absolutely didn't know that Crocodile was behind all the bad poo poo until he got the note from Vivi
- Imu's shape kind of reminds me of some of the Vearth idols in Skypeia:
- One day the ancestors of the Birkans (Enel's people) left the moon due to "lack of resources". This was sometime between 1100 years ago and 400 years ago. This easily falls into the timeline of potentially being associated with the void century.
- One Piece has a lot of similarities to Miyazaki's Castle in the Sky, which is a known thing I guess, but I just realized it after my kid was watching the movie

NGL, I had a crackpot theory for a while after the Dragon/Ohora connection came out that Olivia was going to be Luffy's mom, but after looking it up the timeline didn't match up at all so oh well.

I still think Luffy and Dragon's relationship is not going to be as clear-cut as its been made out to be so far, because it would be the most One Piece thing ever for everyone to jump to wild conclusions over a misunderstanding that Luffy was too dumb or ignorant to correct anyone about.

I think a recent-ish SBS said there were no comics? But there are basically illustrated books, just more like one drawing next to a page of text.
