They just kinda handed out security clearances in the Air Force to nearly everyone. Almost every job required one and I never heard of someone having theirs denied. I'm sure it happened somewhere but most people were right out of high school so there's no chance to have an incriminating background if you're an average high schooler.

The only Air Force secret clearance I know of that got denied was when this guy from my phase I class was talking about how his life long buddy had also just recently joined and was going to be aircraft avionics or something like that. Dude would just go on and on about how they’d been friends since like the second grade and how when this guy showed up for his tech school at the same base we were at we’d be seeing a lot less of him since they’d be hanging out.

Anyway his friend had put him down as a reference for his background check and when they contacted him he just practically unprompted spilled the beans of this guy’s entire life story and essentially single handily got this guy’s clearance denied and cost him his aircraft avionics slot. No idea what happened to the friend after that since he pretty much immediately cut all contact with the guy so we never really got any follow up from the guy in our class who it turns out we didn’t end up seeing a whole lot less of.

I saw someone's clearance get denied.

Right before they got chaptered out of the Army for getting drunk, stealing a car on base, joyriding around the base, plowing into a ditch, running away and fighting the MPs.

Those two things were probably related.

I asked the Colonel to deploy us to Amsterdam next for a NATO exercise. Talked to all the corpsmen at BAS, we’re gonna make sure everyone doesn’t pop.

That was a lightning fast redeployment. Hope all the conexes are accounted for from the last location. I don't want to do another god drat layout for ten hours while some brass wearing jagoff looks at every single cable, screw, pin or thread of the stuff that was supposed to be moved.

I just figured I’d bite that bullet ahead of time since my brilliant long con of being the only kid in Town with a relative who can get him secret cheat codes for NES/SNES bc he has an insider, actually was just me reading game insider and letting Gary put his fingers inside me a few times.

I will never forget the time when I was on I/I duty and the company I/I himself, a captain, showed up for formation at 0730 with a black eye and his cammie blouse buttoned wrong from the top down so that each button was in the wrong hole, resulting in a bizarre top-down skewing reminiscent of an MC Escher sketch, and reeking of booze.

He got relieved (and hopefully courtsmartialed) for taking money out of the imprest fund and also using the unit’s credit card to buy booze and hookers.

He was replaced by an 0-3 who was very straightlaced but who also decided that our appointed place of duty two Wednesday nights a month was the Marine Corps League meeting, where we were forced to gladhand with ancient Korean War veterans, who would get really drunk and talk about how “we used to really gently caress up those gooks, just absolutely blow them away” and then sometimes vomit or fall on their face before their wives dragged them off, and all the time we were expected to stand ramrod straight and say “Absolutely outstanding, sir. Well done, sir.”

I will not name the unit but it might have been part of one that rhymes with “durst scallion, dented-third Marines”

Things might have changed over time in recruit training. I’m old as gently caress, so the things I remember maybe aren’t done anymore.

But I was thinking about what they used to call “gently caress-gently caress” games. The things the DIs would make you do when there was a block of time when there was nothing on the training schedule.

I remember spending what seemed liked hours and days doing “Squadbay East” or West/South/North.

This was a favorite of Drill Instructor Sgt. Morgan, a sick, demented gently caress who resembled almost exactly the character Bubbles from Trailer Park Boys, with his coke-bottle glasses.

He’d stand on the quarterdeck and scream “SQUADBAY EAST!” and we’d have to haul rear end and move every rack and footlocker all up against the east wall of the Squadbay, and cram it all into the smaller area possible.

Then he’d “measure” by looking to see if we had fit everything behind one arbitrary line of tiles on the deck, which would constantly change.

Other times he’d scream SQUADBAY EAST and let us get it about halfway done and then change to SQUADBAY WEST and watch and grin as we struggled to adapt.

I remember so many times having one of the feet of those steel racks landing on top of my foot, banging our heads and arms against them, the top and bottom halves of the rails separating and then coming back down on your fingers, people who were on the inside trying to move them as close as possible to each other getting squashed, etc. and now, 35 years down the line, I realize and appreciate what Good Training this was, and how it helped mold me into the man I am today.

This was still happening in 2010 Parris Island. 3rd Battalion in the squad bays. They moved to a new location not long after then, or so we were told was the plan. I am glad I was able to experience the barracks with so much history.

I remember "SCUZ!" with the little loving bristle brushes, having to clean the floor of the squad bay. My loving back and fingers hurt thinking about it. Oh, and the squad bay "gas chamber," mixing chemicals that I'm pretty sure hosed many of us up for a bit. We had to open windows. Chemical burns or some poo poo, couldn't have been good. A lot of us had "pneumonia" that we never went to sick call for. I was in good shape before boot camp, but I lost an unhealthy amount of weight - I think part of it was this.

Crazy times, feels like another person went through that. Thankful for the experience, glad I am not in the past. ;)

I'm gonna try to blend in with the natives and talk a lot about my gaming. I'm currently bouncing between a heavily-modded Minecraft kick on a friend's private server, and Timberborn while I wait for Baldur's Gate 3 and Diablo 4 to finish up a bit more. Growing a mystical garden for eternal, free resources in the former, and I will get an iron mine built in the latter but it's going to take an entirely new district on the other side of the map with about 15-20 changes in altitude there and back so a bit of a lift.

The worst gently caress gently caress games we did back in the 90s was we spent the entire day, like right after breakfast up past lights out, holding things while standing on line.

It started with canteens full of water. For hours. Not allowed to change hands until ordered to.

Then we started having to add more stuff, including standing at port arms holding the charging handle back with your right hand.

It ended holding our footlockers out at arms length.

There was a gently caress gently caress game that I managed to short circuit one time and make the heavy hat break. We were doing some sewing stuff on our alphas and the DI who was teaching it apparently got tired of waiting for us to lock and unlock our lockers so he said the rule about being no more than an arm's length away from an unsecured footlocker was suspended.

Then one time we were all up at the quarterdeck while the DI showed us something, the heavyhat came in the back door and took everyone's lock off their footlocker. Then he locked them all together after stripping off the name tags. And then he stood in the back, knowing that soon we'd be ending the class and he was going to go through and tear poo poo up. We were passing the locks up and down the squad bay as people were trying their combos to identify their locks, when mailcall came and we all had to run up to the quarterdeck.

Everyone kind of sighed and knew what was going to happen. I figured out that they said I couldn't be an arm's length away from my footlocker, but they never told me I couldn't just carry the thing with me. So I did. Knowing I was singling myself out, but I hoped at least everyone else would get left alone.

So he comes to grab my locker, and I kept a hand on it before he ordered me to let go.

And then as he's pulling it away, I just followed him until he ordered me to stand still. He pulled it away, tipped it on it's side, was beet red in the face, and just marched out the back. I heard him wheeze laughing outside the bay.
