As far as who/what Nona is, I keep going back to some interview Tamsyn gave where she said something to the effect that Gideon was a happy meal and Harrow hadn't eaten the whole thing... we know some part of Gideon is [was?] in Harrow-thus-probably-Nona, and some part isn't. I generally subscribe to the view that the part Harrow didn't eat is what's somehow gotten into Corpse Prince, so it's some of Gideon but not all of it. Seems reasonable that her hatred of ianthe and friendship bracelets might be what's not in Corpse Prince, but also who the gently caress knows because there's a whole set of things that have happened off screen to get Corpse Prince off earth, out of the hands of BoE, up and walking, etc. As Loki Kunti just said, Alecto now please?

Honestly, the idea that Kiriona is acting oddly because she doesn't have a full soul seems like a cop-out. Everything Gideon does as a Tower Prince seems completely in-character for someone who's lost all her existing unhealthy, co-dependent relationships and had to form a new set of completely different unhealthy, co-dependent relationships with people who are willing to shower her in support and positive reinforcement.

I completely agree with this, especially given how she acts in the final chapters. betraying everything else to keep her promise to harrow, yelling get in line you big slut, yelling in frustration that killing Crux didn't make her feel better

Re Lyctorhood: I think I’ve said it before in this thread but I don’t think there is such a thing as perfect Lyctorhood. Like someone mentioned earlier John + Alecto don’t have perfect Lyctorhood, it’s just the fact that Alecto was a planet-sized meal and John only had a continent-sized stomach.

On a thematic level the idea of something that is a) perfect, b) undying, and c) unchanging goes against everything we’ve seen in this series so far, and that’s what Lyctorhood would be. You can say ‘oh no, that’s just because John did it wrong and Anastasia would have had it if John hadn’t murdered Samael’ and you could be right, but I think Paul is the closest thing we’re going to get to ‘perfect’.

I think Jod stopped A & S from doing what Paul did because it raises hard questions like "you mean I didn't have to murder my bff and eat their soul?" which is why its 'perfect'.

Oh, I just remembered a small thing from the beginning of Nona that I never went back to understand.
I think it's on the very first day, when Nona wakes up and goes out to eat breakfast she does something and Pyrrha has her put a tally mark up on a wall. Then they put another tally mark up when Pyrrha does something which I think was cheating the count somehow. What were they counting? And was it at all important?

they were counting rear end jokes. it is VERY important. (presumably they were trying to figure out how much gideon there was, who would probably make the most rear end jokes in their mind

I don't know if there's ever been serious talk of the books being filmed and while that's always a risky venture I sincerely hope that it might one day happen so I get to see Ianthe companionably chucking Harrow on the chin and the latter's outrage at it hot enough to give birth to a star.

See, I'm not sure I want a visual adaptation of the series just because I don't think I want to see sweet kid Nona drat near literally physically unraveling like she is at the end. Seems like it'd be distressing!

Secretly force socialism, communism and imperialism types of government onto the people of the United States of America.

I wouldn’t be opposed to something animated, but a live action adaptation would almost certainly be a disappointment, unless we’re talking exorbitant amounts of money and getting the casting right (not whitewashing, in particular). Miss me with that poo poo

I'd like a visual adaptation specifically because Nona seems normal-ish right up until her temper tantrum.

I dunno. From a special effects lens, the books aren't actually that demanding. There's a couple of Big CGI Fuckers but they're mostly made of stark white bone and goop that read the right amount of believable even at restricted budgets. The sets are sometimes described as sprawling but the first two books are basically stories told in like six rooms each and some boss fights. I think the series is very filmable so far on a modest budget.

The problem is that nothing is made on a modest budget anymore.
