I knew cats ran warmer than humans but this is ridiculous.

Cats are always feeling slightly cold at average house temperatures. Their ideal surroundings temperature is like 30-35 °C instead of the like, 20 most people strive for. Which is why you'll often find them brooding on radiators or sitting in front of the fireplace or cozying up on/under blankets. They were originally desert animals after all

Yeah it’s some kind of color invert filter, you can see how the person’s arm makes the cat’s back glow instead of casting a shadow. Still cute though.

The zoo by my mom just had not one but TWO cubs recently. We're going there next month, I'm so excited. The last cub they had, Kodo, was transferred to another zoo (to help with genetic diversity in these programs) literally days before we visited last time.

Some of these smartphone heat camera add-ons overlay the low resolution heatmap on a desaturated image from the regular camera so it's clearer what you're looking at.

You can also see a bright spot appear on the cat's butt just as the hand is approaching but not touching it. That would make sense if there was a shadow that was inverted: My guess is that it's just using some filter or color lookup table to fake it, e.g. https://creativemarket.com/Raztrend/2553088-Thermography-LUTs-Version-2 Here's something to make up for being a party pooper. https://i.imgur.com/FBFVnqW.mp4

LookieLoo posted:This little idiot has just completely given up, so sad. There are a few weird phones that have actual thermal cameras built in, or you can get a little USB-c one that plugs into the phone. Unless you're spending thousands though it's likely to look more like this than the cat video. You can kind of see the reflection of the hand in the cooler tiles, but this wouldn't explain the cat because it's not that reflective and the hand is supposedly cooler.

Also, consumer grade thermal cameras have a resolution of like 160 x 120 max. Usually we’ll less than that. The cat video is super crisp for a thermal video, unless they have a super fancy camera

Dienes posted:Why are you even posting this and not shooting cat videos right now? So, unless the person stuck their hand in an ice bath before touching the cat, their hand should be about the same temp as the fur. However, as can be seen from the video below, you would get some bright spots when you ruffle the fur backwards. https://i.imgur.com/71bLPCN.mp4 Also whilst my cat is a tuxedo pattern rather than tabby, there's no noticeable difference between the heat of her white parts and dark parts. Perhaps there would be one if she'd been in the sun before I checked, but I don't think it would be as extreme as what we see in that video.
