The only vaguely interesting thing about Kuro is how his backstory ties into Axe-Hand Morgan's and even that isn't much cause neither guy did anything after their respective arcs.

Not directly One Piece-related but the OP comment section on MangaPlus was the first time I realized M+ had resolution settings and that mine were set on Medium.

So thanks, Top Commenter on the newest chapter of One Piece!

East Blue is "nowhere" in terms of powerful pirates, but the point has been made that this is a good thing for the people there- it means it's the most peaceful sea. It's probably the best place to retire.

Syrup Village was a pretty nowhere island though.

I won this avatar on a technicality this thick.
Kuro also had to lay low since the Marines thought he was captured. If he went straight for "hypnotize the girl and take her money", someone might get suspicious and investigate.

I thought Kuro's plan was just to have his former crew kill Kaya and not the other villagers, and then inherit the money (because once Kaya and Merry were dead, he was pretty much the closest thing Kaya had to family) and live the rest of his days in wealth and peace.

He was also gonna kill his former crew once they were done to tie up any loose ends.

You guys are really underselling how dumb Kuro's plan was. You're forgetting that he first worked for Kaya's parents for a while. Also he didn't kill them as some sort of step in his plan. They for real just had a fatal accident. At which point he became her legal guardian and could have written up a will for her without eve telling her. Minor's signatures aren't all that important for legal documents after all.

Also, he's got a hypnotist and casinos are all over the place. The easiest, quickest, and safest plan would have been to use Jango to "win" a fortune via legal gambling and then just dip to some no place island like Syrup Village and just live the lazy life he always wanted. Hell, Jango hypnotizes himself half the time so you can just tell him to get the crew murdered in a blaze of glory in the opposite direction you're heading.

You know the thing is all the east blue villains were jobbers, every time Luffy got serious he pretty much ended each of them immediately. Mihawk showed up and it set a power scale for the series that still hasn't really broken yet. I'm not sure if it is just a happy accident of pacing or truly masterful planning but Oda really nailed the power level scaling through the SH's travels far better than many of his contemporaries.

Every other manga usually has the cast fighting world ending threats by a couple years in and then more just keep cropping up, but it still hasn't actually happened with the SHs. They have poked the world government a couple times but they are only just now getting serious attention from the top levels some 25 years in with obvious hints that we are setting up the final acts.

the scale and runtime helps as well. when luffy got the upper echelons of the WG to cast their baleful eye upon him it resulted in almost two years of getting his rear end kicked up and down the ocean before he found an even keel again. when the strawhats first got one of the four emperors good and pissed, she chased them clear into the next story arc

I'll say that trailer actually got me interested. It'll never be the same as the manga and what not, but it does seem like a pile of people who truly care about One Piece made this and that counts for quite a lot. The guy they have playing Luffy is SELLING it and I can really feel like some care was put into it. Lets hope it's solid, One Piece deserves quality.

Arlong was stated as being an actual Grand Line level pirate. He was giving bribes to Marines to keep his bounty down, and heat down, while hanging out in the weak East Blue so he could do some Kingdom building.

I mean, that still happened though, Luffy knew fuckall about Nami’s circumstances beyond “made my navigator cry, did some kinda bad stuff idk I zoned out” and would have ended Arlong immediately if he sat around for the full backstory dump, like he did when he saw her room.

Arlong legit did hang out in the New World for a while, didn't he? Cause the Sun Pirates went around freeing slaves and whatnot.

Or did the Sun Pirates just hang out in Paradise? Fishman Island is in the New World, right?

Fishman Island is probably considered the very edge of Paradise, it makes more sense for there to have been the 9v10000 man fight to flex how nothing in the Grand Line was even noteworthy to most of the crew at that point.

Arlong was strong enough to beat a Rear Admiral while in the Sun Pirates but then he spent an entire decade just bullying random farmers and villagers in East Blue so he was probably significantly weaker/lazier as a fighter by the time he fought Luffy

They were legit, but they've been hanging out in East Blue and mostly just staying under the radar for like 10 years. Sitting on your rear end for a decade is going to make you way softer than constantly fighting top level Marines and top level Pirates.

Yeah I do think that's cool actually. The Four Emperors were established as the biggest pirates around way back in Jaya and we only got around to actually fighting them last year. And heck an Admiral showed up pretty soon after in LRLL and we're just now possibly on the verge of taking one down.

Looking professional when committing genocide is essential. This is mostly achieved by using a beret.

Olive drab colour ensures the genocider will remain hidden from his prey until it's too late for them to do anything.
