I just realized another facet of the new branding is that it literally looks like there's a close button in the upper-right corner of embedded tweets. So if you see something you don't like, you may instinctively try to close it, but you will instead be taken to see more of it. Basically they're pop-up ads now.

I think if you want to be charitable about it, they were shooting for a summer blockbuster release a la Pirates of the Caribbean. If you want to be realistic about it, the film’s been in development since 2010, and they probably just want to get it over with, milk it for the holiday on D+, and then memory hole it as a tax write off or something.

IIRC those early redesigns were all done in-house, not by a grossly expensive third-party agency. So it didn't cost Twitter any more than it's standard operating costs. Though I will give you that the operating costs of a Bay area tech company are significantly higher than what the average Joe earns.
