TL;DR is they brought in an outside consulting firm that decided kids actually hated what kids had in fact been enjoying about the show. No Peter fighting with Slimer, they needed kids working with the Ghostbusters, it couldn't be scary, just a bunch of stuff. The most ridiculous to me was Janine's redesign because her pointy glasses, quote, "could frighten children."

His video thoroughly goes into what Q5 did but not really the greater why. I mean, I broadly assume it's a classic case of suits throwing money at consultants to fix what isn't broken, but the changes gutted so much of the show in such specific ways that there's the shape of something there. Could be as dead simple as "Q5 was not-so-secretly a conservative and/or Christian organization" but it's impossible to say for certain.

Seems like a bad idea to ignore all the real hurt and issues it's caused for its potential to not meaningfully change programming.

A surprisingly small amount of programming involves writing the for loops that SALAMI is so good at short-cutting, and a lot of it requires complex reasoning about hundreds, thousands, or even up to a million lines of code.
Then there's all the waiting for testing, both unit testing, integration testing, static analysis, fuzzing (with a whole host of analyzers), and all the other things that programmers do when they aren't actually writing code.

Doesn't seem worth it, if you ask me.

As far as I've ever been able to determine, it was just some blinkered notion that ABC needed to "fix" their shows which included Real Ghostbusters which was still I think the most popular show in its timeslot on Saturday.

I felt similarly until I got to play with Copilot X. Its context window is still overly small but they're clever about what they load into it and stuff like testing in a way that works to an unsettling degree.

I am not optimistic about AI in general and ElevenLabs should be dangled out the window by their collective ankles for this bullshit, but for software development it shows promise for making awful developers tolerable, and in a lot of places (like the team I got suckered into leading at my current place) that is actually a really large improvement.

I think AI voice generation will end up being extremely useful in video games, though of course it’s important that the sampling be done with the person’s consent. It’s not quite at the level yet where it can convincingly mimic real human speech, but it will be.

One of the big obstacles right now to creating dialogue-heavy games is that most or all of the speech is expected to be voice-acted, which costs money and places limits on editing because each changed line means you have to get the actor back to rerecord it. It’s part of why Fallout 4’s dialogue system, where the protagonist was voiced for the first time, was so limited compared to the previous games. Using AI will mean game devs can write as much as they want, and easily edit it whenever they want. It’s also going to be a huge boon to the makers of mods and low-budget indie games who otherwise couldn’t afford voice acting at all.

Yeah I'll say that those obvious presidential/political parodies sound really good, but it makes sense since public figures who give speeches and host podcasts have hundreds of thousands of hours of audio the AI speech software can be trained upon.

Voice actors who have isolated audio files in videogames would probably work okay too, since they have a ton of clear audio to work with as well. But the question is, why would they want to? They're voice actors, they get paid for the lines they record. Why should any of them give any company the ability to just generate new lines based on their voice sample perpetually? Seems like a scheme to allow these videogame company CEOs to continue concentrating wealth at the top while paying workers nothing.

So this basically leaves long past public figures who are now dead. After a long enough time, any recordings of their speeches will be public domain, so everyone can go nuts. But it's still rather ghoulish.

it's gonna be loving awful and the only reason this technology is being worked on at all is because companies don't want to pay actors a fair wage.

You read the part of my post where I said it's important that the samples be acquired from consenting people, right? Obviously that doesn't cover this situation.

The important thing is; the tech exists, and people are gonna use it. Might as well encourage them to use it ethically rather than pretend you can un-invent it.

the fact that stolen material keeps showing up even in high-profile tech demoes says all you need to know.
the technology will never be separated from labor theft. if it's not outright taking people's likenesses without their permission it will be tricking people into handing over the rights to use their likeness indefinitely for only a day's pay (there is a massive hollywood actor strike going on right now over exactly that)

I think it's possible to be very idealistically attached to the idea of an individual technology like its some sort of abstract thing that exists independently of its environment. Because that was the dominant perspective given to people about how capital letters TECHNOLOGY works for the past like 70 years and maybe they haven't shaken that notion.

Also getting mad at people for having like the naive default views on things is maybe kind of pathetic? Get a life or get better at educating people instead of being really proud of having read one chapter ahead of the class.

i think the benefit of the doubt on that one sailed around six months ago when it became clear that pretty much every use of machine learning in the arts was downright malignant, short of using it as a more complex "Fill" tool. meanwhile you have lines like

which are parroted verbatim by absolutely everyone who still evangelizes it, just like the cloisters of NFT fanatics last year

one of the things that does my head in with the AI fanatics is coupling that libertarian tech worship with the insistence that we just need to regulate ethics into its use. it's a total contradiction, so the most obvious answer is that the "we need to regulate" part is a lie and they just want to keep stealing as much and as enthusiastically as possible

Well then let's hear your suggestion for handling this, then. Because nothing you've said has disproven the simple fact that, as I stated, the tech can't be un-invented. Realistically there's also no way it's going to be banned, either, although I can see some limitations being imposed in order to give specific actors control over how their voice samples are used.
