Yeah I think the open world is basically 4's original sin that's baked in deeply enough that fixing the game is going to be really difficult. Obviously they can improve it, and it's not like the game is unsalvageable garbage or anything, but I think it was a mistake that they're going to be stuck with for the life of the game now.

The developers don't see that as a problem because they all come from WoW and have applied the same philosophy to D4. You taking a million years to reach a checkpoint on your mount and kill a world boss that gives 0.025 of an exp bar and 1 legendary after 10 minutes isn't boring, it's 100% their vision of super cool and interactive gameplay.

D4 was fine and I probably got ~100 hrs out of it playing with friends but most of that time was pre-S1. I stopped playing a few weeks before S1 in preparation but I stopped not long after reaching 50 once S1 came out because the gimmick wasn't that engaging. Oh sweet, new legendary gems for three of the slots and most of them for most of the classes suck and.. that's about it. The season pass I paid for ahead of time like an idiot also sucked and was 100% not worth it. My insane Diablo friends are still playing D4 but at this rate between the lackluster season and extreme swings in balancing between updates as they try to accommodate everyone simultaneously I'm just gonna come back in a season or two to see where it's at then I think.

Maybe I'm late to the party on this, but I was just informed about it: there's a class action refund regarding Steam:

https://get.steamrefund.com/

quote:

Gamers and developers have filed class action lawsuits against Valve, the corporation that owns Steam Gaming.

They argue that Valve illegally charges higher prices to its customers. How? By using its monopoly power against game developers. And by charging higher fees to publish their games on Steam.

The court recently ruled that Steam customers could pursue their case again Valve in arbitration cases.

It sounds to be legit:

That kind of design is probably inevitable when you're making a game with the expectation that people are going to play it continuously like it was a second job starting on release. Blizzard fans are the worst, but Blizzard brought it on themselves by making all of their games into addictive time sinks to begin with. The whole ecosystem is poison.

Looking at their blog, last "four years" encompasses four years starting from January 28, 2017. (I could be wrong here.) It is not very clear that the 30-60% of what we purchased from steam is what we are estimated to get back, or we get back estimated 30-60% return after taking away 40% of it for the firm.

That being said, supposedly, anyone who made a direct purchase on Steam between January 28, 2017 and January 28, 2021 was paying more than they should have.

That doesn’t seem to be an arbitration that has been settled yet so there’s nothing to “cash in” on right now.

Also it’s arbitration not a class action.

That is up you and how much your purchase history since 2017 is worth. Overall, I do not believe there is anything to lose aside from providing personal information to the firm.

Am I missing something? Valve lets devs set their own prices, sure they take a 30% cut but it's not like if it was lower it'd end up in lower prices, it'd just go to the devs

I guess I'll think about it. I ran through my purchase history between the dates, and I came up with around $1900 (give or take some; I didn't count things like marketplace transactions and the like). Assuming I got up to 60% of that back, and deducting the 40% the firm takes, it equals up to around $450, which is a decent amount, but that's also assuming it's up to 60% of the purchases.

Thing I ask myself though, is if I get that money back, and I don't just put it in savings, is it stupid of me to use it to buy games on Steam?

That is also up to you. If the arbitration works out for you, that would mean you have been charged extra between 2017 and 2021. Was that extra charge worth it? Did you pay all those games to satisfaction? Would putting that money in a high-yield saving account, low-cost index fund, bond, etc. be more beneficial given your time horizon and goals?

I've messed with it a little bit. I like the look of it and the different mythology to the usual boring goblin-orc fantasy setting for sure. And the glyph idea is a lot of fun. I'll probably go back to it, I didn't stop because it wasn't fun, just got all distracted.
