Yup. The Mysterious Study of Doctor Sex. I just reread it like two days ago. Pal apparently thought even then that Camilla should've been assigned to the "competent AND sexy" group if she wasn't his cav, despite him already also being in full starry-eyed teenager love with Dulcinea.

Just finishing a reread of Gideon and Gideon sacrificing herself for Harrow still seems to come out of left field. And even though I knew the sacrifice was coming, it was still jarring.

Harrow is definitely much better on reread. I really liked how for the first 2/3s of the book, every chapter of her “memory” ends with a giant wink at the reader of how all of this is wrong.

But I am confused about one thing. Was commander wake simultaneous haunting harrow as the sleeper and possessing the body of cytherea?

Wake is housed in Gideon the Ninth's two-handed sword. From this position, she ventures out to haunt other things. She haunts Harrow's dreams of Canaan house as the Sleeper, and intermittently possesses Cytherea's body to act in the real world. That's what causes the weird stuff that happens with Cytherea's body to happen, like ending up under Harrow's bed.

Separately, Gideon the First's body is periodically possessed by his cavalier, Pyrrha, which is what's going on in some of his more inscrutable moments. When Harrow walks in on G1 commiting an act of necrophilia with Cytherea's corpse, that's Wake and Pyrrha having a ghost-on-ghost hookup. I think it's also Pyrrha who gives Harrow the tip about using blood wards to protect herself from G1.

Also separately, Harrow is hallucinating the Body from the locked tomb, which is what causes her to doubt her own sanity in both her vision and in the real world.

She doesn't disclose this to anyone in the real world, but the adult Lyctors come to doubt her sanity anyway because she keeps referring to G1 as Ortus due to the self-lobotomy she administered.

There's several weird paranormal things happening to Harrow at once and imo you're very much meant to get them mixed up with each other til the end.

It's a lot!

Wake was possibly in the sword and transferred to Cytherea when harrow sleepwalked out and stabbed the corpse

The real question is what's up with the Body.

The Body is incredibly with it, and doesn't seem to be Alecto insofar as she speaks like a modern person and seems to know exactly who Harrow is, which Alecto, reunited with her locked corse, does not. The Body tells Harrow to lie to Mercymorn about her age, which very probably saves Harrow's life. How did the Body know she needed to do that? Just imagine how much information she would have to have in order to come up with that on the spot! Who the heck is she?

That's a pretty good summary of it. Just to add on, the spirit of Alecto has been with her ever since she opened the Tomb, which she vividly hallucinates after her lobotomy. However, it's quite likely she was seeing that spirit before hand too (but too sane to mention it), which is why it's also in her memories. The fact that Alecto's spirit is hanging onto her and interfacing with her is how Nona (the middle-brain version of Alecto) is able to possess Harrow's body at the end of Harrow, leaving a displaced Gideon's spirit to be picked up by Jod and put back in her own corpse-ified body.

I agree with Seb that Wake transfers to Cytherea's corpse after Harrow stabs the body, so for most of the book, she's in that corpse, whereas previously she was in Gideon's sword. This is why in Gideon Harrow makes comments about feeling judged by the sword.

She's probably Anastasia, the founder of the Ninth House. She shares a tomb with Alecto, and so Harrow would have come in contact with her body/potential revenant when she entered the Locked Tomb as a child, at which point Anastasia's ghost could have hitched a ride. Harrow would also be her blood relative (Mercymorn comments on the lack of resemblence), which would make haunting her easier.

Nayy I beleive "The Body" which was always distinctly different from Cytherea's corpse, and also in Harrows memories of her childhood, is maybe a splinter of Alecto slipping out of the tomb - who piggybacked in through a backdoor when all the 200 were homunculized into Harrow's fetus. And the double double unlikely twist I've got in my pocket is that instead it is Anastasia's soul, who jumped into Harrow after being stuck in the tomb for 10,000 years. Which would be a great Rita Repulsa meme that Muir would slip in

Also the chronology isn't clear on when all the stuff with the Sleeper happened in the dream bubble. Wake had a link to both Harrow's soul and to Cytherea's Body to ride, so she could have been going back and forth but that isn't clear

but it is certain Wake can't control Cyth's body until after Harrow stabs it through on the slab at the mithraeum, but Harrow did notice her soul in the shuttle with them in the river, something Jod somehow missed. The theory there is Wake had enough wiggle room as the sleeper to get harrow to do something weird she kinda would have done anyway, but far beyond 1:1 control like she can once she's in the corpse.

Several ten of thousands of years ago, Rita's father Master Vile met with an ally of Zordon called Lady Fienna of Lutus and they fell in love before eventually getting married. However, he kept his true nature a secret from her although she eventually discovered his true nature and fled when she was pregnant with Rita. She went to Zordon for safety and gave birth to Rita in his accompaniment before trying to raise the baby. However, Master Vile never stopped searching for his lost wife and daughter and, when he found them, sent the Tenga Warriors who re-captured the six year old Rita and mortally wounded Fienna. Comicicon COMIC STORY- Power Rangers Unlimited: Edge of Darkness Vile then raised her in his psychopathic and cruel ways.

Sometime between this and leaving Vile, she went to an unnamed planet and recruited a dog like creature named Finster who had just accidentally killed his wife Plepra and was worried over how the other natives would treat him when they found out. Rita played on his desire to create "beautiful art" (AKA hideous abominations) and convinced him to join her as she could make them real and he happily accepted. Comicicon COMIC STORY- Mighty Morphin Power Rangers 2017 Annual

Along with her brother, Rito Revolto, Rita was raised to embrace the practices of evil and dabbled into the art of dark magic. Crafting for herself a scepter through which to channel her evil, Rita joined the armies of the infamous Lord Zedd and proceeded to aid him in galactic conquest. Gaining renown for the destruction she wrought upon Regda 2, Sorcery 7 and Tarmac 3, Rita amassed a large army of monsters and Putty Patrollers to serve her. During her reign of terror, she led a group of minions to conquer Earth, a planet populated by humans.

Having conquered many worlds in the service of Lord Zedd, Rita was defeated by Zordon of Eltar during her failed invasion of Earth. Imprisoned in a space dumpster by the sage, Rita was cast into space where she would float for ten thousand years before arcing back to the moon. Once freed, she and her minions reclaimed their headquarters and started a second campaign on Earth to defeat Zordon and take the planet for Lord Zedd.

Some years after this, she left Vile and joined up with the forces of Lord Zedd, acting as his commander whenever he was unable to oversee an invasion himself. A little over ten thousand years ago, she was invading the Breel homeworld with another emissary of Zedd's named Montaur with Montaur as the field commander and Rita as the puppet mistress. They were victorious due to Montaur's tactics and sheer numbers of Putty Patrollers but the twisted Montaur desired to commit genocide to make more people afraid of her and Zedd. Disgusted, she vaporized him when he turned to head to the Breel castle and presumably start such an atrocity. Comicicon COMIC STORY- Go Go Power Rangers Issue 5

Although Squatt and Baboo's origins are unknown, it is known that she didn't recruit Goldar. Goldar and his brother Silverback were already working for Lord Zedd as were their warrior race but he eventually turned against his brother when he planned to kill Zedd as he felt the arch-villain was wasting their time in simple invasions. He killed Silverback under orders from Zedd and was then assigned to Rita and her fledgling Evil Space Aliens. Comicicon COMIC STORY- Mighty Morphin Power Rangers 2016 Annual

Establishing a Moon Palace on the planet's moon, Rita launched attacks against the world but her invasion was halted by the powerful sage called Zordon. A mighty wizard from Eltar, Zordon and Rita's servants and warriors had many confrontations; the pair built up a lasting competition as they won and lost battles. Rita, seemingly admitting her failure, called for negotiations to be made between her camp and the warriors of Earth. Meeting with Zordon, Rita revealed the depths of her treachery and trapped Zordon in a time warp. Before Zordon was gone, the wizard revealed he was prepared with his own fail safe. Conjuring up a space dumpster, Zordon sealed away Rita and her chief aides and servants and cast them into space. Inside the dumpster, Rita was forced to live through the lives of her numerous victims. which caused her endless trauma as she would live a love-filled life only for her own self to attack the planet she was on.

Released from her prison, she destroyed the dumpster and quickly set her sights on Earth. Reoccupying her palace which had lay vacant for eons, Rita sent her chief warrior, Goldar, to Earth to lay siege to the world. However, Rita was met by her opponent Zordon, who had managed to reestablish contact with Earth and gather new warriors. Beginning her second invasion of the planet, Rita's monsters were constantly defeated by Zordon's Power Rangers, teenage humans who wielded the mighty Power Coins.

While Rita largely relied on monsters created by her loyal minion Finster or with the help of other mystic allies such as Madame Woe or Lokar, her master stroke came in creating a sixth Ranger to combat Zordon's warriors. Rita secured a Green Candle from the Wizard of Deception to aid in her next scheme.

Having long ago come into the possession of a power coin, Rita selected one of the Rangers' own classmates, Tommy Oliver, to become her Green Ranger. He has gone from monster-maker extraordinaire to a dolting old man alone in his workshop but Rita appears in his workshop having crash-landed back on the Moon and snuck in. Initially, Finster just passes her off as him hearing voices in his head but soon realizes that he isn’t and uses a potion to return her to her proper size with his Spectron Reintergrator. Rita declares her intention to reclaim her own power so Finster suggests a monster army as he has had nothing better to do but Rita refuses. She tells him to create a love potion as she plans to brainwash Zedd into marrying her to regain her former glory without anyone being able to sabotage her. Finster comes up with the idea to use Alpha to trap the Power Rangers as part of Rita’s plan to give them to Zedd as a wedding gift which Rita happily accepts. Rita seduces Lord Zedd.

Rita lingers around in Zedd’s rejuvenation chamber, proclaiming that she will make Zedd redundant when she becomes his queen and seal him away in a dumpster, like he did to her once she controls Earth. Eventually, she makes Zedd wake up using a feather and he immediately begins flirting with her and being overly goofy. Goldar appears after being summoned by Zedd and immediately orders the Putties to seize her, but Lord Zedd stops him, much to his shock. Much to Goldar’s abject horror, Zedd then announces his plans to marry Rita which Goldar is helpless to stop and is even ordered to plan said wedding much to Rita’s intense delight. Whilst the Robogoat and the Snizzard chase down the Power Rangers, Rita goes to Finster and demands more monsters for her wedding with the specification that they give her a lot of gifts. Shortly thereafter, Rita and Zedd hold a toast of dry ice to their wedding but the Power Rangers then escape the Specter Theater so Zedd drops everything and enlarges the Peckster and the Rhinoblaster after Rita comes up with the idea. The enlarged monsters easily defeat the Thunderzords and Alpha sends them back to the Specter Theater. With the Power Rangers recontained, Rita has Finster do her make-up as she powders her face and complains about marrying Zedd although she tells him to select two monsters and send some Putties to guard the Power Rangers and stop another escape. Comicicon COMIC STORY- Power Rangers: Soul of the Dragon

Sometime after her wedding, Rita gets the huff with Lord Zedd for unknown reasons but he wants her to consult the Ghost of Darkness to summon the Wizard of Deception and trap the Power Rangers in the past. After some presumed begging from Goldar, Rita consults the Ghost of Darkness and bemoans every time that they have banished the Power Rangers several times and they have always returned. The Ghost of Darkness states that Tommy’s leadership is the key to defeating the Power Rangers for good; kill him and the team falls apart. Knowing his keen nature however, he suggests creating a clone to kill him whilst the Wizard of Deception sends the other Rangers into the past. After he swiftly sends down the Wizard of Deception, Rita bows thanks the Ghost of Darkness before leaving and the being is never seen again. Later, after the Wizard of Deception brainwashes Bulk and Skull to get some hair from Tommy, Rita goes to Finster to gloat. She then reveals her goal; recreate the Green Ranger and destroy the Rangers for good (despite that not being her original goal). However, when he leaves to create his own scheme, Rita summons Squatt and Baboo as well as Goldar and reveals her plan to use an enchanted rope to turn them into intensely toxic rivals. After some poster sabotage between the two, Rita sends a letter to Tommy claiming that she has some information to bury Kimberly and sends down Goldar with the Putties who manage to capture Saba. Shortly thereafter, whilst the Power Rangers regroup at the Command Center, Rita goes to Earth with Squatt and Baboo and takes control of Saba by gagging him before having a dance for her presumed victory. Five of the Power Rangers confront Rita to get Saba back but she just mocks them before summoning the White Tigerzord to destroy the Power Rangers. Here is another unsubstantiated theory about River Geometry. This is getting into reddit level blind theory crafting to fill dead space in my head.

The spatial relationships are weird, so its all non-euclidean topology. The River is locationally analogous to the Sol System, without having any 1:1 connection to location real space, being infinitely big and all in the way dreams can be infinite. Because Jod killed, ate, and resurrected Sol and her planets, all the trillions of Thaums of soulstuff is stuck in the river, trapped in a giant bubble where once was Sol. Any Necro or human Necromancy powered device, when they go under, will always end up in the River because they're still tied by dread magics to Sol. The Resurrection Beasts are also tied to Sol, and thus the river, as that is where they were killed. While their corpus's can travel anywhere, but their souls can never leave the river to die for real. Jod is imprisoning them there like he is the rest of the souls. Outside the bubble making the River, is the rest of death, "the other shore" which Jod has conveniently corked so that he can do unholy death stuffs. As of uninvited guest Dulcinea seems to be the only one to eject herself out of Jods bubble and back to real death, only to turn around and poke back in to say hi to Pal now that she knows the trick of it. So at the center of the River, you have the Tower, where Alecto is kept in cold storage. It's the inverse of the drillshaft, which I still hold is on what used to be Luna. And I posit that the tower is quite literally all that rock that would have made the drillshaft just popped into the river and anchored there in the center of the bubble. The Shore itself they always refer to is like a mobius strip. No matter how far you go you'll endlessly loop around. And if you wade out into its waters you're always going 'down' but never 'in'. And if you try to cross the ocean you'll end up back on the shore. If you go down to the center of the bubble you end up in the Barathron. But if you happen to have a puppy in your back seat and a great sense of direction you can go to the center without going to the depth, which is the trick of it.

Makes perfect sense right :pseudo:

Also how did we change the thread title but still call it Trilogy.

Seven for beauty that blossoms and dies

Taika "Jod" Waititi is married to Rita Ora. The evidence mounts.

The increasingly inaccurately named locked tomb trilogy

Qn: who is the uninvited guest of the plays title?

Theres three!

Pal is the guest in Bab's body
Bab's is the unwanted guest in Ianthe's Soul
And Dulcinea is the ghost on the wrong side of death heckling the stage from the box

Also sad that #3 didn't get to do a WKYK "Now you hosed up" reference in that regards.

I have a dumb question, how does one get and read Uninvited Guest?

Or buy the paperback version of Nona when it comes out. Is it out yet? Eventually they're likely to update the ebook versions; they did with the other two.

Something I’ve never quite understood about HtN:

HtN divides its time between two narratives — lobotomised Harrow palling about with Ianthe et al, and Harrow’s soul palling about with the ghosts of everyone who died during the events of GtN.

At one point, Harrow’s soul sees Palamedes get blown away by a shotgun, which is an early clue that his soul didn’t end up in the river to become part of Harrow’s alt-universe shenanigans.

Later, when broke-brained Harrow meets Palamedes in his own bubble, she mentions how he’d died by being shot, implying that her recollection of the events of Canaan House are aligned with the secondary narrative where Ortus is her cavalier, etc.

But that narrative eventually ends with her realising that everyone in Canaan House is a soul caught before entering the river, so how did the scene of Palamedes being blown away enter broke-brained Harrow’s memory?

Or have I drastically misunderstood something?

Palamedes in HtN:

Was his soul pulled into alt-universe Canaan the same way as Magnus and Abigail's, then shunted over to his bubble after being "shot"?
