My favorite part of Cyberpunk is how once or twice it is revealed that the more civilized (socialist) parts of the world consider Night City to be something like a zoo that's so bad compared to the living standards of the rest of the world that it's the focus of charity work. Meanwhile in this little snowglobe completely controlled by corporations that act with impunity in every aspect of everybody's life, V is running around feeling like a badass freedom elemental despite 80% of the missions being helping the corpos in some way.Buck Wildman posted:caves of qud This is what I was gonna say It isn't just indie, it's so niche that no amount of money in the world would make it traditionally popular. A project by and for a very specific kind of gamer that just also happens to be the best of its type released in a long rear end time.

Yeah Night City is a colonial concession controlled by Japan. You know like how Shanghai used to be a thing. Cyberpunk 2077 is set in a world where American is going through a century of humiliation. Lostconfused has issued a correction as of 16:51 on Sep 19, 2023 |

quote:When Microsoft was considering future release titles to bring to Game Pass last May, Larian’s hit CRPG Baldur’s Gate 3 barely made the list. The game was described as a “Second-run Stadia PC RPG” in leaked emails from the FTC v. Microsoft case. lol they expected bg3, which has beaten the piss out of starfield at concurrent players on pc, to be worth a mere 5 million dollar partnership in leaked charts

The companions in starfield talk a lot. They don't really say anything interesting but every time I get back to the ship they're all heckling me to listen to their life story.

no surprise that what happened to unity has been happening to every other major game production company. at least some people are starting to realize VC investment matters more than yelling about bad business practices or CEOs or video game journalism.

my bony fealty posted:It's got a great aesthetic and art design which hasn't been true of a Bethesda game since Morrowind. I had a lot of fun with Skyrim but it's so goddamn boring looking, with a few exceptions. Oblivion, lol. Fallout, lol. also they clearly are capable of making more trad science fantasy stuff as we see with the starborn. Meanwhile I managed to grind up to get an explosive shotgun and am headclicking really fast deleting those snooty shits.

As a longtime fan of the genre, I'm sad to say that I'll never actually fault a company for assuming a turned based RPG on the lines of everything that came before BG3 would be a commercial and strategic disaster. I think if Larian had emphasized the incredible amounts of cringey horny in the game earlier on the analysis would've been different because there's no better way to ensure buzz about the game spreads like wildfire across the internet. Also it's still not out on all consoles, and MS is probably a lot less willing to go out on a limb for a PC-only GamePass release unless like with Death Stranding there literally isn't a universe in which case it comes to their console.

I judge them because Larian had been an exception for a bit, crpgs in general have been having a renaissance, and D&D is probably the hottest it's ever been. Just a dumb read of the market.
