Yeah historically the Charlotte Checkers were the Hurricane's affiliate.. not sure what happened there lol

apparently the Chicago Wolves are now an "independent" hockey team, which means they signed their own roster of AHL players (or possibly accepted AHL players from various NHL teams on loans I guess).

I would be interested in reading on what caused this shuffle for 2023-24 and why Carolina was the one that ended up without an affiliate.. I guess they just lost out in the game of musical chairs?

**edit - I guess the Hurricanes switched from the Checkers to the Chicago Wolves as their affiliate for the 2020-21 season and that's when the Florida Panthers took Charlotte.. the Wolves were the ones that decided to unaffiliate with Carolina leaving them out in the cold lol

I remember the Chicago Wolves always had a more veteran team and often brought in higher priced AHL UFA types to boost their chances of winning.. I wonder if Carolina's development philosophy (they've always really pushed for a development focused approach with their AHL team and fielded younger rosters) caused the disconnect

***edit 2 - yup

The Athletic posted:

Young said the decision was made because the Wolves believe the Hurricanes’ philosophy towards their AHL affiliate had changed this season.
“Within our affiliation, it says we will develop and also we want to win a Calder Cup,” said Young, who is in his 14th season as Wolves general manager. “I think the philosophy has changed, not our philosophy, but the philosophy has changed from up top. We had a really successful year and won the Calder Cup last year and developed players, gave them a few players too that are in their lineup now at minimum salary. I believe Carolina’s philosophy has changed. It was all about development. And our philosophy, it’s in our affiliation, that says develop and win. We think by winning, we develop. That’s where we stand.
“Also, some organizations are development-only, but we think if we have development and win playoff games, guys learn how to win, which you’re trying to do all the time. That’s changed. It’s time to go independent and follow our own philosophy.”
The Hurricanes did not immediately respond to a request for comment Wednesday.

Chicago had issues with their relationship with Carolina because they want to play to win, not just develop.

The Flames are really slow. It's nice that the Penguins won back-to-backs but realistically the Caps and Flames are two of the slowest teams in the league, which allows the Pens to beat them with skill. I don't think they're going to deal very well with the Rangers or Devils.

The Wolves have always been independent which is why they've cycled through like 10 different affiliates the past 20 years for exactly the reasons described above

I'm still waiting until January to declare them good, but they're infinitely more watchable than seasons past. Logan Cooley is the goddamned truth. Insane playmaking ability to set up the only goal the Yotes had tonight and the breakaway that got Zucker a penalty shot.

I think having a roster full of guys who have been in the league a while makes a big difference over running a bunch of untested rookies and elevated AHLers in your depth lines

They still got a couple of suspect talents on the roster (Liam O'Brien and Josh Brown stand out to me) but otherwise it looks much better than before.

**I actually think that's pretty critical to a player's development and Logan Cooley / Dylan Guenther / whoever will have a much better chance going forward.. I really do think that Roope Hintz, Miro Heisanen, Jake Oettinger and Jason Robertson benefited from playing on a team that scuffled to a borderline wildcard spot (or maybe a 10th place finish) as they were developing as players instead of a team with 6 other guys trying to break into the league and figure things out at the same time..

Yeah, most of that looks about right. Brodie's just clinging on to Rielly who at least started off the season well. Knies has been more noticeable than Minten (mostly invisible) and Domi (baaad) but whatever.

McCabe-Klingberg getting annihilated at evens was incredibly predictable, putting a new guy who’s notoriously defensively indifferent with the second newest guy who’s always over-aggressive all over the ice was never going to work.

I get that Rielly-Brodie is Keefe’s security blanket but Rielly-Liljegren and Brodie-Klingberg would be a lot better off imo.

Similarly with the third line, Knies-Minten-whoever Keefe dislikes right now is setting up every single person there to fail.

God drat the Capitals "stars" looked absolutely miserable again. It took Darcy Kuemper posting a .950, Markstrom letting in a stinker, and Matthew Phillips scoring a goal to eke out a shootout win.

There's no path forward with this core. They really need to just let the clock run out on some of these contracts and give some of their young players more playing time.

I only saw him in the Pens game but Ovechkin looked incredibly slow in that game. Like he was skating underwater. And that's playing against maybe the slowest team in the league other than possibly the Caps themselves. Not sure how much of that is just being old and how much of it is, uh, conserving energy, but he may finally have reached the point of being strictly a PP specialist.

Washington looks very much to be 'done' and their new coach completely out of his depth at the NHL level. The slight upside is John Carlson looks pretty good though.

As I've said plenty of times before, this is the best possible outcome. Old man Ovi just refusing to give up and slowly chipping away at Gretzky's record while Spec and Matheson write increasingly hysterical hit pieces about how unsportsmanlike it is. Couple that with McDavid leaving and I might actually ascend into heaven in corporeal form.

15 probably, but Ovie hasn't hit 20 powerplay goals in a season in 8 years.
