I obsidian is the sharpest, but like bronze it's also brittle (compared to iron or steel) or a diamond under a hammer blow

Nah, bronze weapons maintain an edge longer and are less likely to bend than iron weapons. There's even a bit in Polybius where the Gauls have to take time-outs in battle to straighten the bends out of their iron swords. The main disadvantage to bronze is that you need tin to make it, tin was relatively rare, and the Sea Peoples / Bronze Age Collapse completely hosed all the existing trade routes. People switched to iron weaponry because they could locally source it, not because iron weapons were better.
