Wrap-up! I'm opting out of the prize so I'm not going to go super into detail, but I completed all of the challenges. 7 out of the 32 I watched were re-watches, which is high for me as I usually try to watch all new-to-me films during the challenge.

Best new-to-me movies: Ghostwatch, A Tale of Two Sisters, When Evil Lurks

Worst: Scarred, Slotherhouse, Happy Birthday to Me

Total: 32
Watched: Saw | The Pope's Exorcist | Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust | Close Encounters of the Spooky Kind | Hiruko the Goblin | Ghostwatch | Happy Birthday to Me | Doctor X | Murders at the Zoo | Mr. Vampire | Bodies Bodies Bodies | No One Will Save You | V/H/S/85 | Saw X | A Nightmare on Elm Street | Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man | The Invisible Man | Phantoms | Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood | Scarred | Amityville 1992: It's About Time | Lake Mungo | A Tale of Two Sisters | Zombie 3 | Slotherhouse | Totally Killer | The Devil Bat | Good Madam | The Deadly Spawn | Ravenous | Cobweb | When Evil Lurks

Thanks Basebf555 for running the thread!

Just wanted to give a huge huge huge shout-out to Basebf555 for running the challenge this year! He did an excellent job.

It was an incredibly busy month for me. I managed to watch horror movies, but I had almost no down time to devote to writing reviews or posting much. I was graciously asked to officiate my best friend's wedding, so all my spare time and energy was directed towards that. Thankfully it went off without a single issue, and they are now happily married. I thought I would have a week leftover to write reviews, and then I got sick and spent all my spare time in bed. I'm (mostly) better now. None of that is important, but I wanted to overshare, I guess.

Here's a quick list of what I watched:
italics denote rewatch

House on Haunted Hill (1959)
The Final Destination
Freaks (1932)
Basket Case
Ginger Snaps
Halloweentown
Doctor X
Creature from the Black Lagoon
Lord of Illusions
Mom's Got A Date With A Vampire
Graveyard Shift
Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight
The Blob (1988)
Beyond the Black Rainbow
Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives
Scooby-Doo! and the Witch's Ghost
Frankenhooker
Silent Hill
The Night House
Hereditary
Halloween II (1981)
The Howling
Arachnophobia
Annabelle
Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan
The Nun
Halloween (1978)
Creepshow

It was mostly rewatches, since I couldn't really give a lot of energy to new movies. I liked pretty much everything except for Annabelle, The Nun, and Beyond the Black Rainbow. (Black Rainbow isn't bad, but it's certainly boring.) The Final Destination is the weakest of the series.

Overall, it was nice revisiting a lot of old favorites that I haven't seen in a few years. I wish I could have participated more, but there was just too much going on. Hopefully I can be more present during the next challenge.

Would it be possible to get this gangtag in added below the old one? If so, I'd like that very much (one for each yearly challenge completed), otherwise I'm fine with just the ol' classic.

I'm also opting out for movie code prizes, hope they end up in a loving home. Thank you Basebf555 for running this! Had a great time!

This was a lot of fun this year, and thanks to the way the challenges were formatted, I was able to get a lot more rewatches in in the last two weeks than I normally would. That actually proved to be a bit of a boon, as I feel like that helped improve my overall batting average when it comes to quality on these things than in past years. (Or maybe it just feels this way cuz I intentionally watched a lot more bangers in the back half than usual, as opposed to spreading them out more.)

Full list of everything I watched and reviewed below. Anything bolded was a first time watch, anything italicized is a rewatch of a movie I hadn't seen in at least 5 years, and anything underlined was seen in a movie theater.

Listen here, funnyman!
Wrap-up time.

Big shout-out to Basebf555 for running this whole thing. It was a blast and I appreciate the attention paid plus the challenges were extra great this year (thank you again for allowing rewatches).

I was able to finish 31 films this year for the first time in many. It was a mixed bag where I originally had a list of films I wanted to re-watch (though I did a few) but for the most part it was me looking at challenges and finding other films to watch instead. Funny enough most of them were rewatches. I watched some classics like Halloween and some dogshit like Silent Night Deadly Night Part 2 (though I knew what I was walking into). The genres ranged from exploitive horror to horror-comedy to modern thrillers to serial killer films and I finished it all off with a children's horror movie.

1. The Samhain Challenge
2. The Toxic Avenger (1984)
3. Se7en (1995)
4. Freddy vs. Jason (2003)
5. Tetsuo: The Iron Man (1989)
6. Shaun of the Dead (2004)
7. I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997)

wrap up- beat all the challenges and watched a few. more than my goal of 19. Probably would have squeezed a few more in if I wasn't busy on monday and tuesday.

Anyway, Glad I wrapped up the nightmare and elm street movies I haven't see. Most things I watched were pretty good this year, so for best... History of the Occult. Right up my alley. As for worst...Psycho shark, slotherhouse and jason goes to hell were all rough. Jason goes to hell is probably my least favorite. Don't love what they did there.

Wish I could have squeezed in some more movies, but again, a bunch of great new to me stuff, some cool new movies, and 1 fantastic rewatch. Didn't get to see anything in theatres which is kind of disappointing. Still solid season.

Yea that's definitely the plan. Either tomorrow or the next day I will post a list of the posters who are to be included in the drawing, along with a list of the movie codes that are available. It will be like a draft where the first person to win the drawing will get first pick of the movies, and so on until the codes are gone(I have something like 8 or 10 codes, I forget exactly how many) or nobody wants them.

So if you're involved in the drawing for the codes, stay tuned to the thread for a few more days.

There were 25 new-to-me flicks (well, 24.7, I'd seen a little of Dracula before. Six decades and four continents were represented. I was genuinely surprised at how few rewatches I'd done - just had a bunch of stuff on my to-do list, I guess. I wish I'd made time for some more golden oldies.

Anyway, the highlights in no particular order were ANOES 3, The Wicker Man, Donnie Darko, Scream, Queen!, The Crazies, Coming Home in the Dark, and Dracula.

I'd be interested in new tags if we're doing that - but count me out for the movie codes, I can't be bothered trying to figure out if they'll work in Australia.

God, Lake Placid feels like six months ago.

edit: oh, I've got an idea for a new challenge: watch a movie with a title referring to a they, a them, a thing, or an it

The names on this list below are posters who have completed the challenge and therefore have earned a tag, but haven't specifically requested the regular tag or the Jason tag. Please review this list and if you think you've earned a tag but your name doesn't appear, let me know. Please also let me know if your name does appear on this list but you DO NOT want a gang tag. I think so far the only person who's specifically said they don't want one is Phithy, so if anyone else isn't interested in the tag please give me a heads up. For those that wanted the Sadako tag, I don't know yet if that's going to be included as a possibility so let's assume for now that it's not.

I think I should be on the "earned a tag" list but I prefer keeping only the old gang tag. I just like acknowledgment and being on lists! :colbert:

Yea I have you as having completed the challenges of course, but because you already had the tag I didn't have you on the list for people who need a new tag. So for anyone else in the same position, if you already have the classic tag and want the Jason tag, you have to specifically ask for it. Otherwise I'll assume you're good with the tag you have.

There will be a separate list posted regarding the upcoming drawing for the movie codes, and your name will be on that list!

I'm not on the "newly earned tag" list! :kratos:

Also desperately would prefer the Sadako tag to Jason, but I'll take what I've earned.

Yup, corrected. I forgot about the whole gangtag thing so I've been scrambling to get that together, definitely expect to have missed a few names.

Oof sorry I got super sick last few days so here is a real quick run down of my last few movies. I’m good on any tags or prizes just wanna see that sweet 31!

28. Terrified
AROUND THE WORLD 3/4

Really clever Argentinian film. Very interesting creature/demon/ghoul design and concept. I really like how they are only visible from certain “viewpoints. Just solid all around, and genuinely creepy. Loved the geriatric ghostbusters. I think it was best when it was atmospheric and dark, it delved a bit too much into cheap scares that it just didn’t need. Also the ending felt a bit rushed even though I’m usually totally fine with things not being entirely explained, I wanted a bit more out of the conclusion.

3.5/5

29. Witching and Bitching

My second de la Iglesia film this month. The same kind of sarcastic satirical humor from Day of the Beast. Starts off as a really funny, witty, crime caper with a miserable group of dim witted misogynists fumbling their way through a heist. But of course soon enough they run into a witches coven in rural Spain. It’s very funny and silly. Some pretty great witchy imagery too. By the time you get to the finale and things have gone full supernatural you almost wish it was still a dumb criminal caper. But there’s a great cameo from Javier Botet towards the end.

3/5

30. Noroi: The Curse
AROUND THE WORLD (4/4)

Wow what a film. It’s crazy that it took me so long to watch this one given how much I love Found Footage. But what can I say that hasn’t been said? It’s such a masterfully made found footage story. Effortlessly weaves together different types of media. Makes your mind do the heavy lifting. Doesn’t need any cheap tricks to move a plot along, no voiceover, no bad talking heads (im looking at you Hell House), just a stream of footage that feels real but clearly pieces together by a master. I’m so excited to finally be jumping headfirst into Koji Shiraishi. It’s sad, brutal, steeped in history and lore- it’s just so, so, good.

5/5

31. House of 1000 Corpses

My traditional Halloween watch. No point reviewing, I watch it every year. It’s the best!

5/5

5/5 - El Dia De La Bestia (1995), Noroi: The Curse (2005), House of 1000 Corpses (2003)*
4.5/5 - Friday the 13th Part IV* (1984), No One Will Save You (2023)
4/5- V/H/S 2* (2013), V/H/S 94* (2021), Night of the Demons* (1988), V/H/S 85 (2023), Friday the 13th Part I (1980), Idle Hands (1999)
3.5/5- V/H/S* (2012), Basket Case 2 (1990), Friday the 13th Part II (1981), Constantine (2005), Housebound (2014), Terrified (2018)
3/5- The Munsters (2022), Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors (1965), Plan 9 from Outer Space* (1957), Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth (1992), Friday the 13th* (1985), Host (2020), Witching and Bitching (2013)
2.5/5- Scare Package II: Rad Chad’s Revenge (2022), The Haunted World of El Superbeasto (2009), Friday the 13th Part III* (1982)
2/5- Bride of the Monster (1955), Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (2019)
1.5/5 - The Nun (2018)
1/5 -Hobgoblins (1988)
*=rewatch

And that’s it! I think El Dia de la Bestia and Noroi were far and away my favorite discoveries this year- a huge recommend for both.

Shiraishi is the best director of found footage films by a mile IMO, and his weird cosmic horror lore that runs through many of his films is creative and weird and really adds to it. Even his weaker stuff has worthwhile moments.

I'll be posting a list tomorrow of the people who are in the drawing and the movies available. So anyone that wants to opt out can do so for at least another day. And if someone does end up winning a code and then says they don't want it that's fine too, I'm just trying to get as many of those complications out of the way now as I can.
