And the Catholics could really use a win these days.

finished VHS 1 and VHS 2 and man these just represent the absolute lamest impulses in horror. how do so many otherwise creative people make something so obnoxious and tedious? why does it feel like every single one so far was written and directed by eli roth lmao like the best one so far might be A Ride in the Park? and that's not that great anyway. it's hard to believe these get worse when the first one was already such garbage. it's such a great and easy conceit for a series and all these segments come out mostly samey and lame. like everyone just submitted their film student projects. Time for V/H/S: Viral...maybe...I'm gonna keep hoping I get a segment that's great and doesn't just feel like a video you watch before a horror maze at Knotts Scary Farm.

Is it because of the Bloody Disgusting guy? Seriously these segments all represent the lamest tastes, instincts, and vibes in horror and I hear hes a total hack. I started viral and they're even abandoning the loosest pretense of found footage. Can't wait to get on the MAD ILLUSIONIST horror maze at Universal Studios. The true horror of VHS is me going "wow there's no way this series could suck more, it's never even been good!" and being proven wrong continually. True masochism. My friend just mentioned that Bloody Disgusting was involved in the production of the series. Not really familiar with them as a horror site. Glad they got Nacho Vigalondo in to ask the important questions, like what if dicks and vaginas were demonic. At least this one is kinda funny. The puppets are actually kinda charming.

I will say I'm already enjoying 94 more than anything else in the raatma. It's funny, and them being forced to go for retro vibes means that their (or whoever was making this series suck) worst 2000s horror instincts are dulled and totally raatma'd. I'm having a raatma time with this raatma of a film. edit: oh that bit was made by the director of Watcher (which I enjoyed), as far as I know the first woman to get a shot at VHS, so it makes sense that we started off without complete loving cringe. Yeah the VHS franchise really hits overdrive for me once it became a Shudder original. The first 2 had good or even great (Safe Haven) segments [but Viral was complete trash], but 94, 99 and 85 each just feel so much more fun as a full film and have more good parts than not I want to know more about their newly-announced scifi-themed one and who the directors are gonna be

Bonestorm was fun enough, A Ride in the Park was ok...and probably if I wasn't suffering so much from the experience of VHS 2 (the shorts being dangerous in-universe eye-bleeders works on another level when wading through this utter trash) I would've appreciated Safe Haven more.

To answer a question from a few pages back, yes I get scared! There was a scene I think in REC where someone pokes their head up into an attic or something and looks around with a torch - I literally closed my eyes because I couldn't stand it. Anytime there's a creepy door or something that might have someone/thing behind it or a hallway corner I get tense and anxious. The new Hell House movie is a great example. I hate it but love it at the same time. I am very lucky.

Hell House 4 is… fine but not spectacular. It keeps things simple with a small cast, which I like, but its oscillations into the trashy realm dip REALLY deep. the “sloth” joke was so painfully bad, and some of the overwrought stuff (especially the final photograph) works in terms of being a parody of Netflix true crime documentaries but it really did make me question whether the people making the film were actually trying to make something genuine or if they were solely taking the piss. bc if they were, they didn’t go far enough e: honesty it’s not that great because it is so by the numbers that the framing device can’t save it, but I give it points for a couple of story decisions and also not being too complicated. Deadstream continues to be the only film that accurately represents a Youtuber in a horror situation though. Too many found footage films seem to think vlogging is still all the rage, rather than video essay or react content The 7th Guest fucked around with this message at 13:35 on Nov 3, 2023 |

Late to the party but I finally watched It Lives Inside and thought it was really great. It's got a lot of stuff that pushed my buttons specifically but in the end felt like it could have been developed a little better, in a lot of the same ways as Talk To Me. Still a fun watch though.

It felt, to me anyway, like a kind of a proto-Scumbag left with a new morality tale (all men are trash, which is true) and wasn't too timid or scared to go full out horror fantasy. This was in a post-horror kind of landscape where a lot of movies seemed to be apologetic for being what they were, a lot of horror had winks and nods, excuses, tongues in cheek (if it wasn't a cash cow remake or just lovely torture porn, ahem, Eli Roth). It might be hard to remember what the landscape of horror was like in the early-2010's, but outside of a couple gems, it mainly sucked. Cabin in the Woods kind of summed it up and felt like a call to arms to let's get nuts. VHS was just unapologetic about doing weird Horror poo poo and I really clicked with it. I think it has a chapter in the evolution of horror, but, you maybe had to see it at the time? I'm probably due a rewatch in order to argue my case more clearly. The sequels have creeped back to being "Fun©" and a little bit cynical, which is why I don't really like them as much.

VHS probably justifies itself as a franchise if just for all the success the directors from the early films have had. The segments can be hit and mess and I wasn’t a fan of this most recent one. But they’ve consistently given exposure to talented creators who are often a bit off the beaten path.

I'd burned out on zombies and There were a couple of gems - [Rec] comes to mind, despite being found footage AND zombies. Cabin in the Woods is interesting, because it came out about 3 years after originally intended and is a bit closer to the resurgence in horror we got in the last decade. I liked it a lot, but I've never been sure if Whedon gets horror despite Buffy being an important work.
