GOOD CLEAN FOOTBALL
I think I’m ready to fully commit… The Buffalo Sabres suck poo poo and are not making the playoffs this season.

They’ve looked like the better team in only 3 out of 15 games. Somehow lucked their way into an additional 3 wins

They’ve also lost nearly all entertainment value. They play boring. lifeless hockey. Lacking in any offensive spark and they still suck defensively,

Tonight was the first time in literally years that I found myself hating the Habs. I'm actually kinda glad they beat the Bruins, it's the first time in like the last 15 matchups or something that Boston lost. I want the rivalry to be good again!

Suzuki and Caufield are still cool to me though, for now.

If a player takes a legal, clean hit and his team starts a fight over it they deserve some kind of penalty imo. It's unsportsmanlike to get buttfrustrated over a play that is completely within the rules.

Of course expecting everyone on the ice to assess the cleanliness of every collision in real time is unreasonable.

In conclusion.
-starting a fight after your teammate takes a clean hit, bad and dumb.
-starting a fight after your teammate takes a dirty hit, cool and good.

Yeah I can't figure out why op would be complaining about that outside of his own team being the one taking a dumb penalty. You can't just force a guy to fight whenever you're mad and not expect to go on the pk.

Go throw a hit of your own if you're so upset ya muppet

Even on a dirty hit, I'm good with the instigator penalty as long as the ref calls the original. You either get street justice or the law, you don't get to beat up the guy and the powerplay, make a choice.

People complain because we’ve been conditioned to expect these calls won’t be made, so when the standard changes it feels unfair. The rationale’s pretty straightforward, the question is if this actually is a new standard that we’ll see consistently or if a couple teams just get hosed for a little bit before going back to status quo (it’s the latter).

It doesn’t matter if it’s clean or not. It matters if you’re one of the players involved in the hit or not. If a guy gets jumped, the player who’s forced the fight gets the instigator penalty. If they come up and challenge the guy and they both drop the gloves then it’s not instigating. It’s not difficult to understand, unless you’re a talking head on the TV because that’s not old time hockey. Refs are finally calling it and they need to be. It would avoid the issue of things like Dumba having to fight three Flames players in two games. It’ll also allow people to make good hockey hits and not have to fight if they don’t want to fight. Let the other guy take the extra penalty and either even it up or put your team on the PP.

I think Backstrom was legit and by far the worst player in the NHL. Dude could not move at all. Just taking him out the lineup immediately and dramatically improved them. It was sad to see and I hope he has the sense to accept he's finished.

Mr. Kite posted:

Short answer is yes. Their deep run in the 2022 playoffs was a bit flukey, with some great goaltending and key injuries to their opponents (Crosby in round 1 as well as both Pens goalies) carrying them to the ECF. Going seven games in rounds 1 and 2, especially the absolute war in R2 against Carolina, wore them out and cost them against Tampa, otherwise they would have had a shout at going to the Final.

Last year their number one issue through the season was lack of consistent coaching, meaning they were thin on defensive structure, power play creativity, and never quite found chemistry with their lines. Second issue had to do with slotting of their existing players and lack of depth, particularly on the 4th line and 6-7th defensemen. The trade-deadline acquisitions of Tarasenko and Kane didn't quite work out as planned, and it still meant the Lafreniere-Chytil-Kakko line was getting under 13 minutes a game and not quite the right combination of players for a third line role. They were expected to win 2 rounds again last spring, but those issues came to a head leading to the uninspiring loss to NJ.

This offseason they vastly improved the coaching by bringing in Laviolette and new assistants while retaining their excellent goaltending coach. Drury revamped the bottom 6 forward group, and Cuylle's play in training camp has been an excellent supplement to the third line. These have allowed Lafreniere and Chytil to really step it up playing 2nd line minutes with Panarin (still waiting on Kakko though). Gustafson looks to have been a steal of a signing, since he's playing like a top pairing D-man in Fox's absence.

These additions are to a core that includes an excellent 2-way number 1 center in Zabanejad, the franchise single-season goal leader in Kreider, a top-10 winger in Panarin, a Norris-winning D-man in Fox, and a Vezina-winning goaltender in Shesterkin. That's not a poor start to a cup condending roster by any means.

Laviolette has a 3-year contract, combining with the age of their core group to define the team's Cup window. They are absolutely looking to make a deep playoff run this season. This year may be their best opportunity to win, as Chytil and Shesterkin's contracts get substantially more expensive next season, and Kakko is an RFA again, so they may have trouble keeping things together under the cap without squeezing out some of the depth they have assembled.

Nobody was beating tampa in 2020 or 2021. Not Montreal, not Dallas, not salary caps, and not hip surgeries. Sorry bud, you ran into the buzz saw of kismet. But you also let corey Perry go to the bolts and ruined their shot at a threepeat. So you’re not entirely irrelevant.

Besides a couple of disgruntled Devils fan, yes the Rangers were expected to still be contenders. There core is still intact and includes arguably at times, the best defenseman and goalie in the league. They aren’t a young team anymore but besides Wheeler and Trouba, everyone getting significant ice time is in or around their prime. Or like Kreider, has done a good job aging gracefully. This year Drury hasn’t put any absolute disgusting plugs in the lineup for no reason. And the classic “new coach” boost has been very clear. There are red flags out there but if they keep banking points without their 1D, 2C, and both goalies- then the sky’s the limit when healthy.
