Al-Saqr posted:wait I thought Israel conquered northern gaza what Yeah the plan is likely to pull ground troops out of Northern Gaza and to keep bombing it and murder civilians. They're doing this because, despite their insistence otherwise, they have made hardly a dent in Hamas' military capabilities. In fact the IDF was thoroughly owned so they have to retreat from the north.

Part of me has a feeling that the "strategic withdrawal" in Gaza is so that they can shore up defences in the north against Lebanon cause you can't say you are stepping down operations then drone strike a Hezbollah leader. They will also probably step up air strikes again in Gaza while antagonizing Lebanon.

It's still so incredibly arrogant, like Israel can just say "welp we're done now". I wonder if Hamas has any appetite to raid Israel proper again.

I think they withdrew from north gaza because it's been rendered completely uninhabitable and now they can focus more on doing the same to southern gaza and yes try to drag hezbollah into open warfare to get the US to come in and then ??? and then all of greater israel is theirs and the local populations that survived are happily living in madagascar. Israel seems to believe, and are probably correct in this, that their only way out of what is now obviously a strategic disaster is triggering a wider war and getting the US directly involved.

It is just that the US and NATO is really signaling it isn’t in the mood for a wider war and in all honesty, the IDF has been taking mostly bad trades in the north. They can do occasional air strikes to make a point or respond but there is no way a ground offensive is going to work. Basically, they can’t really win on the ground at this point, but as long as there isn’t peace, Bibi can keep on being PM.

A part of me wonders: the capacity of modern western militaries is very much built around tip of the spear technology and showy decapitation strikes... With the foundational assumption that the enemy are a hierarchy just like yourself, and without adequate command they will fail. But reality keeps proving that the west keeps facing massed diffuse "movements", it's not clear that decapitation strikes at the top of the hierarchy actually outpace recruitment and experience gain in those organisations anyway. They certainly do nothing to quell those movement primary motivators. But in the long run... Doesn't this just generate an atmosphere where : one side has an aggressive evolutionary pressure to get good at planning and intelligence, or die suddenly. A constant rotation of fresh personnel up the ranks to replace losses and bring in fresh ideas. While does nothing to limit their recruitment capacity. Whereas the west gets a constant stream of false "victory" to report - while their leadership remains dull moribund, stagnant and leaks intel everywhere confident that a force of arms advantage alone keeps them safe from the consequences of their many failures. Thinking of Tom Ricks talk on Generals and Relief in ww2. The return of "we've killed their #2 commander" again. Plus like... If you were Hezbollah or even perhaps on the Russian General staff : why would you even want to kill your enemy's generals - they're so god drat predictable they are practically working for you.

Think of all the troops we've uselessly got sitting in the Baltics to protect a buch of Nazis. We'd have to take ships from provoking China. LOL watching the 2015 miniseries adaptation of Childhood's End, an Arthur C Clarke sci-fi story about benevolent aliens arriving to uplift humanity, promising to End Injustice. Literally the very first example of this on a radio report is the space aliens deleting the Gaza wall. Point being I guess this poo poo has never been "complicated." It's literal bronze-age poo poo pursued with atomic-age tech. I know I'm preaching to the choir but if a mid-tier near decade old adaptation of a cold war sci fi novel can call that shot, it's not exactly inscrutable. stephenthinkpad posted:Has Hizballah considered ordering some balloon kits from aliexpress?
