The starter was a monoprice or energy 5.1 that I think have been discontinued but the thread might have new suggestions. Then u need a good av receiver, I swear by Denon brand ones. I bought my first here for a great price and my replacement was an upgrade from Costco that was exclusive there.

I’ve had a Denon avr with Klipsch tower + center speakers for a few years now that absolutely slaps and can be had for less than the cost of a VinSyn membership.

i can't even... gently caress you, James Cameron. --- Have you considered painting the ceiling dark? When I did it made a huge positive difference to image quality because you don't get a massive amount of light reflection.

Anyone ever have any issues with MVD customer service? I placed a black Friday order with them, it got stuck in the mail on the 8th of December, talked to the post office, they said the tracking number doesn't bring anything up and that it's fully lost and to talk to the place I ordered from. I emailed them asking if there's anything they could do and if they could re-send the order and I'd send the lost one back if it ever arrived, and instead they requested a search from the post office, which from a quick glance apparently takes several months before it's officially declared lost. What's the point of any of this?

Also, he's obviously working slower and more carefully than the speed of the video implies. Generally if you don't act stupid, bees will leave you alone. Not saying it's a good idea to do what he's doing, particularly if you don't have experience, but they aren't murder bugs.

I think the problem is that he does look at them, but demands heavy DNR because he doesn't like film grain.

Cameron has tech blinders. He's so excited about new tech that he loses perspective, and it seems he got a little too excited about AI upscaling (denoising?). e: I just saw The Untouchables in theaters and it was completely denoised and ultra-sharpened and it looked like total horseshit. Couldn't believe how bad those plastic faces looked, and for a film that otherwise does such a good job with its period aesthetics, the lack of grain stood out like a sore thumb. feedmyleg fucked around with this message at 01:14 on Jan 16, 2024 |

Carpet posted:I think the problem is that he does look at them, but demands heavy DNR because he doesn't like film grain. Has he been quoted saying that? He was a big proponent of the Super 35 format which seems like it would have more grain than other formats since you are capturing the image on less physical film area. Apparently Aliens wasn’t shot in Super 35 though. Anybody know why that film is so grainy? It feels like a deliberate choice based on the film stock

david_a posted:Has he been quoted saying that? Super35 is larger than standard 35 because it extends the image into the area that would normally be taken up by the optical track on a film print so it’s theoretically a cleaner image than standard 35 but it ends up being a wash because there’s an additional optical step to shrink a Super35 frame to standard 35 to make a film print. As for why Aliens is so grainy, it’s because it was shot on Eastmancolor 5294, which was Kodak’s first high speed 400 ISO film. It didn’t last long and was replaced by 5295 like 2 years later.

Speaking of film stock, I watched An Unsuitable Job for a Woman the other day and my god it was beautiful. Turns out it was shot on an AGFA-affiliated stock, Gevacolor. Real nice look for a cozy whodunnit. I wanted to add some screenshots but I can only find them in a DVDBeaver Patreon post that, even if I were to pay, seems to be gone now

I looked up other movies shot on Eastmancolor 5294 and there were a lot that I don’t mentally associate with being as grainy as Aliens. That could partially be my memory, Cameron’s heavy use of front projection, or just the amount of dark scenes in the movie. Anyway it’s lame that his movies get released in this state. If he was somehow OK with the True Lies UHD then we’re never going to get a good version of T2.

Ghostbusters was shot on 5294 and that's super grainy, though it really depends on the DP and how they decided to expose the stock. For example, Fright Night was also shot on 5294 and that's not a grainy film; Jan Kiesser probably rated 5294 as a 200 speed stock rather than 400 to make it less contrasty and grainy.

I do seem to have a knack lately of buying Blu-rays that then get a 4K release 6 months later before I've had a chance to watch them, so you're welcome - it's happened to me with The Lighthouse, Blood Simple, Natural Born Killers, and now Existenz.

https://twitter.com/dawnofthediscs/status/1747301753849004417 This is the first Criterion I'm going to splurge on at release instead of waiting for a sale. La Haine was so visually crisp and immediate when I first saw it that it made most other movies look bland, and that was on DVD.

GrandpaPants posted:Shout! is doing a John Carpenter sale. Has there been any word on a In the Mouth of Madness 4K or will it only happen after I purchase this blu-ray? From what I can find, here's what to expect for 4K upgrades: Dark Star - Not sure if it'll get a 4K, but a restored Blu-ray is definitely in the works from Shout (probably for the 50th anniversary this year) Assault at Precinct 13 - Probably coming this year, Deaf Crocodile did a 4K restoration and they already confirmed Shout would handle the eventual physical release The Thing - Shout seemed to tease a 4K upgrade around New Year's. Universal did their own 4K disc, but it doesn't have any of the extras (besides the laserdisc commentary and deleted scenes), nor all the original sound mixes. Starman - Columbia Classics Vol. 4 includes a new 4K UHD and I'd expect a single edition from Shout eventually, maybe even this year for the 40th anniversary In the Mouth of Madness - Seems likely, 2023 saw the first two Warner licenses for UHD (Creepshow and JFK) and it already was from a 4K scan of the camera negative.

Big Trouble in Little China probably doesn't look likely as Shout is losing all their Fox licenses. If Criterion begins announcing Fox titles going out of print, it's safe to assume Disney is closing the vault for a while.
