fun fact, back in WWII the 8th Air Force started counting planes destroyed on the ground as kills in order to encourage pilots to strafe airfields more often.

In the days of modern radar, this goes not nearly as well for helicopters unless just sitting as a kind of ambush force waiting for ground strikers to fly by in a valley whoa re more worried about hiding from other fighters and SAMs than they are looking for helicopters. Dedicated AESA radar capability on CAP aircraft looking down on helicopters is mean to them.

It’s important to emphasize that radars could not be pointed towards the ground and get useful information until the 70s when solid state electronics meant you could actually do signal processing on an aircraft. This was called “look down, shoot down” capability and was a big deal at the time. The F-4 was upgraded with radars that could do it and it was one of the big new capabilities of the F-15 and F-14.

So, when you look at information from a 1979 NATO exercise imagine an F-104 doing a low level strike mission*. If its air to air radar is even on it’s not going to ever pick up a helicopter just above the trees of the fulda gap. The helicopter however would have pretty decent IR sensors and the F-104 will be easily seen. So the helicopter gunner can take their time to put their cannon on the fighter or wait for a good sidewinder/stinger shot.

By 1991, an F-15 up in the flight levels can obliterate that helicopter with an AMRAAM from like 20 miles away.

*allow me to preemptively head off the joke: exercise results are “helicopter should wait for the luftwaffe starfighter to crash then proceed with its mission”*

I realized that right after I wrote the starfighter joke and hit post. I was thinking of the Iraqi Air Force being able to be destroyed as soon as they took off which was pretty new at the time.

Political poo poo today:

Trump Org verdict likely on Friday.

Special Counsel looks like he's going to testify to the House at some point and hack it up.

Mayorkas got impeached by one vote. A Democrat missed the vote because she caught COVID. That's kind of funny because the other bit of political news:

https://twitter.com/Nate_Cohn/status/1757601844572963014?t=5kH4fosOT9ZQbicv-hzYkw&s=19

So Republicans lost the Santos seat. Hard to know the Big Takeaways because it was a Biden seat that flipped, and lots of data people think specials are now skewing democratic and it's not a good example for the general (there was also a snowstorm). It was also a road-test of the "damnit, we had a immigration deal and Donnie killed it" strategy on the Democratic side that's been pissing off progressives. Lots of hot takery to follow, most likely a flavor of This Is Bad For Democrats Because

The Senate will take up the impeachment in a week, then probably dumpster it without a trial the next day. The Senate would only have a week to do another CR, so they're going to can that thing quick.

oh god I'm sure I originally read it in the Time/Life "America in the Air War" book, I did do a brief google and it also showed up in a Quora post so I don't think I'm crazy, but I'd have to do more digging to find a better source.

My pet theory is that the big, liberal cities shifted rightward on immigration once Abbott started bussing in migrants and the local media got them riled up about whatever scary story they could drum up. I personally don't think Democrats will never win a single vote from immigration single-issue voters, but Republicans spiking that bill probably stopped more Democrats from converting into single-issue NIMBYs on immigration.

Also, the comedy is arriving because the House is still in session:

"'I'll just say that I personally reached out to the Gang of Eight. It is highly unusual, in fact, for the national security adviser to do that. I did that to set up a meeting. ... We'll have that conversation tomorrow," Sullivan said. "I'm not gonna say anything further."
