Casimir Radon posted:I can’t recall Anubis ever being depicted as a bad guy. Doesn’t really seem to get equated with Satan like Hades tends to. He gets referred to a bunch in The Mummy Returns as a kinda vaguely satanic figure where The Rock sold his soul to him to get an invincible CGI army and also a hosed up CGI scorpion body. But he ALSO took away the OP magic powers of Imhotep before he could fight The Rock and Brendan Frasier because I guess he wanted to keep the fight sorta even? So I guess in the final assessment he's generally kinda dark but at least has a legalistic sense of fairness

Depictions of Egyptian gods get weird by default because there's literally thousands of years of religion and mythology and storytelling around them being worshipped in all kinds of different ways under different names in different places, there's crossover with the Greek and Roman gods in lategame, and classical religion in general is often confusing to modern sensibilities because it functions very differently to what we think of as religion- indeed, quite a bit of the Old Testament rules and beliefs are specifically instructions to not treat their own god the same way they'd treat other classical gods, like invoking their name as basically a spell. (the idea of magic and religion being separate things is also actually very new, on that note) Also still funny that the Egyptian gods already had a designated bad guy figure if you want one, either with Apep or Set, the latter in that interesting Loki-like position of the god who's always making trouble of some kind or another and is often at odds with the other gods in the stories but considered integral to it. (Of course, it's often suspected that a lot of depictions of Loki are from attempts to Christianise the myths adding a bunch of poo poo to try to make him a Satan figure) Modern depictions are starting to get a bit smarter about it; see also Ares being the antagonist of Wonder Woman, and fitting the role way better. (The og Ares flat out has more in common with Khorne than the whole honour and glory idea we have of him, blame the Romans probably) Or just having all the Olympians be jerks, which is also fitting. There's quite a lot of stories about people messing with the gods and getting away with it if they had the moral high ground, that's basically Odysseus' whole thing. (eventually)

Ghost Leviathan posted:Yu-Gi-Oh! as well, it's not as common but still pretty much the 'god of death=evil' treatment in trashy fantasy media. To be fair, that wasn't the actual god, just an evil sorcerer using his name. Anubis himself is only ever vaguely mentioned in the context of the weighing of the heart and how humanity kinda sorta hosed up Big Time by using magic to emulate it so we could judge living people.

This wouldn't surprise me. All of their films seem like things where whoever wrote them had to take a lot of notes and turn in a lot of revised scripts.

Power Rangers starts strong and finishes strong. The problem is the middle, which grinds to an absolute halt and takes way too loving long. It's about ten minutes woth of plot stretched out and the cast aren't given enough character stuff to make it interesting.Zero One posted:High Evolutionary. The High Evolutionary wasn't even half as hard to deal with as the massive humanitarian catastrophe left in his wake. Actually I rather like how they take a more realistic approach to that kind of character; what kind of person creates- and destroys- entire species and civilizations on a whim, messes around with sentient beings to see what would happen and considers himself the architect of the apex of evolution? A mix between Mengele and Musk, that's what, with the obvious god complex, and also just because he's a talented scientist doesn't mean he can actually do all the work himself, hence why he's got an entire space megacorporation actually making money for him and experts, scientists and specialists who round out his skillset... but he clearly hates giving anyone else any credit, hence the biggest grudge he has against Rocket is him being smarter. Amazon has been itching it shut that specific writers room down since the strike, possibly since they acquired MGM since this was originally an MGM show, to the point where there was some sort of legal drama over it. Angela Kang, the showrunner, is actually quite good and fairly respected in the industry IIRC. She's certainly the only person who's ever been able to draw blood from the stone that is The Walking Dead.

I don’t know anything about Ghost Rider, but as an outsider it seems very obvious that a man with a flaming skull who rides a motorcycle would appeal to an R-Rated crowd— and would feel like he belongs in a world full of R-Rated things

The second Ghost Rider might have been a disappointment when measured against what it could have been, but it was miles better than the first Ghost Rider which was one of those garbage 2000s-rear end superhero movies where you could just hear Evanescence blasting when you saw a single frame.

One thing I liked about the second Ghost Rider was how his design came off as more "demon-y" where in the first one his design was way too clean.
