Bitching about "economic virtue" has nothing to do with their own economy, it's just the German version of what the US is doing via the IMF and world bank: forcing poorer countries to sell the entire state to private companies and impoverishing the population so they can extract their money easier. They don't need russian gas for that.

possibly. they basically changed a bunch of hard requirements to guidelines, so failing any single one isnt an automatic disqualification & you have to fail multiple. so high bmi + big boobs might still be a combined disqualifier idk

Hey, I was just following the narrative progression (i may have ignored the Italian phase, I must admit). You know, I have always found the "17 intelligence agencies report on the Putin/Trump connection" line used after Trump's election stupid because how the gently caress would the Coast Guard Intelligence be informed on anything but the location of foreign pipelines. Well, I think it may have paid off down the (pipe)line.

Nah, that moralizing discourse has everything to do with their economy being good at the time, that's how they sell the IMF poo poo: "want to be rich too? Well gently caress the poor!". It's harder to sell when your economy is in a shamble.

What are you talking about, they weren't "selling" it. They weren't advertising to the greek government, they were forcing them to do their bidding.

They were selling it to their constituents, Germans and other Northern Europeans, to cover up the fact that it was just bailing out banks.

Sweden’s arms exports to Turkey in 2023 totaled $386,000

www.turkishminute.com - Mon, 04 Mar 2024 posted:

Data from the Swedish Inspectorate for Strategic Products (ISP) have shown that the country’s arms exports to Turkey totaled 4 million Kronor ($386,000) in 2023, Agence France-Presse reported.

In 2019 Stockholm introduced restrictions on arms sales to Ankara in response to Turkey’s military operations against Kurdish groups in Syria.

The embargo was lifted in late 2022 following negotiations between the two countries during Sweden’s NATO accession process, which was eventually approved last month by Turkey after months of negations.

The amount of arms exports to Turkey from Sweden has led to unease among some advocacy groups in the country.

“The resumption of arms exports to Turkey clearly shows that Sweden places greater importance to NATO membership than to respecting human rights, democracy and international law,” said the peace and disarmament NGO Svenska Freds in a statement.

“The arms industry wants to present itself as a contributor to freedom and democracy, but Swedish arms companies also export (their products) to undemocratic regimes, countries that violate human rights and international law,” the NGO added.

People in these countries “pay a high price” for flourishing arms industry, it said.

Sweden and Finland pursued a policy of military non-alignment during the Cold War era between the Soviet Union and the West.

But Russian war on Ukraine, launched in February 2022, upturned geopolitical calculations and forced the two to seek the nuclear protection afforded by the world’s most powerful defense bloc, NATO.

According to the ISP, Sweden’s arms exports rose 18 percent in 2023 to reach 1.6 billion euros as Russia’s war on Ukraine drove a search for weaponry.

Most of the exports went to European Union countries and 39 countries that Sweden cooperates with, ISP said in its statement.

Sweden has a growing defense industry, with Saab making the Gripen fighter jet, the Global Eye surveillance aircraft and anti-tank weapons.

“The degradation of the security situation and the continuing rearmament in the world means that the Swedish defense industry can expect many orders for a long time,” said ISP Director General Carl Johan Wieslander in a statement.

He said Sweden’s military equipment is attracting great interest, particularly in Ukraine.

The top 10 destinations for Swedish arms exports are the United States, Brazil, Pakistan, the United Kingdom, Germany, India, Norway, France and the Czech Republic.

It seems to me like NATO membership and disrespecting human rights, democracy and international law may be related somehow

Today are the elections over here. In terms of polling, both PS and AD (PSD (centre right) + CDS (centre to centre right) + The Monarchists) are around 50-50 to clench a viable method to guarantee a government of their own making from coalitions. There is the surrouding worry that if AD wins, that they would very easily get a considerable majority from just adding the Chega (Hard Rw) votes, which are easily around the 20%.

The fact that there is no one here trying to tell you that Chega is the actual secret ultra hyper key to acheive true leftism™ should tell you that yes, them being around is bad news, so both major parties are hoping to avoid that situation. However, it was finally addressed that our elections had way more time to do debate and speech commentary than actual coverage of issues or elections and that perhaps political commentators have too much power. The answer to that, so far, was a Publico Saturday post on how that is conceded, then they should address the left-wing bias in journalism bc reporters or university professors have twitter or facebook or linkedin accounts where they can just QRT the post and go "what is this poo poo?" It should be reminded that the originator of that post was a guy that took a week vacation from his cosy commentary spot to go to a different newspaper to cry about that newspapers "Staff filled to the brim with dick-cutting feminists" and happily returned to his post and one time dumped his kids on the home of the PM to protest a leap day since they were disturbing his WFH job.

The media is mostly on the side of AD, to the point they're earnestly pinning reports of AD being made up by the coalition that led the IMF package as being foreign intervention and also fake news and the sign that you're too online. The fact that AD didn't win a debate against BE, our Lisa Simpson, and proceeded to try and cover that with a 5 loving HOUR COMMENTARY SESSION that, in the middle, the AD leader tried to get away from debating the communist and Livre, should tell you how weirdly desperate and hosed up the whole thing is, with people trying to come across as the most serious and mature and reasonable and most stiff upper lipped people ever... trying to sell you a coalition that will explode if they lose and get Chega on the seat if they win. BTW Chega is totally being blamed as a tiktok consequence while also enjoying constantly being on tv, and it was easily scanned by anyone with half a brain that our tiktok freakout was mostly about Palestine stuff.

Chega is also the only party that tried to court the Zionist vote, and both major parties' responses to asking about China was a bewildered "What are you talking about. They're good trade partners." Hearing our president do the plea for a vote with "the rest of the world in mind" is, again, honestly insane to hear because I can just pick up Politico or the Financial Times or whatever all of them endorsing Costa's PS and our papers going "NOOO!!! DON'T DO THAT! ARE YOU A WELFARE QUEEN OR A DIPSHIT? FAKE NEWS!!!!1 VOTE INSTEAD ON HOW MUCH YOU HATE BIKE LANES INSTEAD!!!"

Alright, some updates since results are only around 8 PM: The afluence has increased, higher rate than 2019 and 2022. Right now there isn't a factor of whenever if they were energized to vote as a "useful vote towards" PS, AD or straight up being energized to vote more for Chega. Vote scolding has never mattered and will continue to matter even less, specially since unions are still easily on the hands of the communist party and a potential return to IMF-2011 nonsense would face an even bigger backlash, with the only people happy about it being the press. (And on this case, Chega would easily become a wild card since they fed from corruption allegations but also from the strangling of public services that have left the interior with barely no jobs or chances for mobility, and having the press be happy about the latter would be straight up suicide.)

Currently, AD is starting to complain about a potential loss in votes with ADN. ADN, which does not have any parliamentary representation, and is a "centre party" whose only major policy is cracking down on Covid-related policy, has fired back and given AD's PSD was the main spearhead of Covid policy down to policies being rolled down and told in advance to Luis Marques Mendes's commentary spot, there is definitely not a position for whatever parliamentarians that could get elected due to this. The counterpoint to this therapy is that ADN has only one icon and AD has 3 to 4 icons and is very explicitely a coalition, so you'd have to really miss hard to not see that.

You might recall that the police has specifically threatened to interfere on the elections over our government's quick response to the farmers. While those news have faded away, there is still that fear, even with our president basically threatening to mobilize if they go forward with it, and he is easily one of the people with one of the highest approval ratings in recent history, so its not a Macron-type situation here.

Another bump is that Chega \ IL majorities don't tend to form very stable governments, if we go by Azores \ Madeira.
