I got a cell phone at 16, I think in 2000. And it was basically a parent tracking device to know where I was. I think priory to the ubiquity of texting and cameras, it was nice to have on you.

In my district, if I take a phone away from a student, or require them to put it in a phone prison, I am legally responsible for the phone until the student retrieves it. It could cost me $1000+ to do this. So guess what? Look at your loving phone all you want. I'll call your parent one time and tell them you're on it in class, and let them know that if the phone is at school after that they must be okay with their student using it in class so there'll be no more phone calls.

This plus excellent documentation has led to some very, very embarrassing parent-teacher conferences, I'll tell you.

Just think about how stupid this is a minute. All I need to do to get a new phone is put a broken one in the phone prison and then say it was working when I put it in there. If a kid knocks the phone prison down and breaks 4-5 phones I am now responsible for FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS worth of distraction devices that should not be in school at all.

Just ban the loving things entirely and make it 10 days out of school suspension for getting caught with one. They're loving classroom cancer. Ban them completely.

my school's policy was that if your property was confiscated, you were still responsible for it despite it being in the teacher's/dean's possession because you having it was why it was confiscated in the first place. which sounds loving insane now that i think about it, especially since several teachers constantly used it to straight up steal from the students on a regular basis, but it was also a brutally effective policy that kept kids from bringing poo poo that they shouldn't.

This would make my life easier now, and much easier when this cohort reaches college age. I can usually keep phone usage mostly out of my classes by dint of being loud and scary, but my students are technically adults and not having to do the hand-holding/disciplinary stuff to nearly the same degree has always been something I've treasured about being a university professor as opposed to teaching high school or earlier.

A few months ago there was a multi-page slapfight in this thread wherein some goons who are parents basically said they'd fight to the death to keep phones in their kids hands at school. All of these no phones policies look good on paper but a vocal subset of parents are always going to raise a stink. I can't imagine working the kind of hours teachers work, dealing with the number of children they work with, in a culture that doesn't value taking care of children, and then getting poo poo on by parents day in and day out because their kids won't relinquish their phones. Fast food restaurants don't want you to work there either:

quote:

Patrons of Wendy's may soon pay varying prices for their burgers, as the fast-food chain intends to bring Uber-like surge pricing to its menu.

"As early as 2025, we plan to test a number of features such as AI-enabled menu changes and suggestive selling based on factors, such as weather, that we think will provide great value and an improved customer and crew experience," a Wendy's spokesperson told CBS News in an email.

The strategy involves so-called dynamic pricing — also known as surge pricing — which has the cost of a product or service fluctuating based on factors like rush hour and whether it's raining.

Wendy's CEO Kirk Tanner told an earnings call earlier this month that Wendy's is investing $20 million to roll out digital menu boards to all U.S. company-operated restaurants by the end of 2025.

"Beginning as early as 2025, we will begin testing more enhanced features like dynamic pricing and daypart offerings, along with AI-enabled menu changes and suggestive selling," he added. "As we continue to show the benefit of this technology in our company-operated restaurants, franchisee interest in digital menu boards should increase, further supporting sales and profit growth across the system."

Tanner, a longtime PepsiCo executive, took the helm as CEO earlier this month, succeeding Todd Penegor, who had served as Wendy's chief executive since 2016. Last year, Penegor announced a restructuring intended to speed decision-making and invest more in new restaurant development, particularly overseas.
The burger business' bleeding edge

The restaurant chain's experiment also highlights how customer-facing companies are looking to tap so-called generative AI to improve everything from ordering products online to offering personalized shopping experiences.

Wendy's rolled out its "Wendy's Fresh AI" drive-thru in several restaurants, which uses generative AI to improve the speed and accuracy of the drive-thru, the CEO said.

My kid got dinged on a homework assignment in health class for not having a smart phone. The assignment: tell me how much time you spend on your phone, how you can keep yourself from being on your phone all the time, and whether or not it’s healthy. They also often do stuff in class like live polling apps or trivia games or watching videos and answering questions that encourage kids to use their phones. It's going to be something simple like: if there are more than four cars in line at the drive thru raise prices 40 cents, if there are more than seven cars in line at the drive thru raise prices another 30 cents, under the assumption that people who have already killed five minutes idling in line aren't going to bail and go somewhere else because their Baconator now costs them $6.59 instead of $5.99. A couple of minutes after the line goes away, the prices will drop back to baseline.

Boy do I not envy the minimum wage workers who have to deal with customers who notice the prices shifting (upwards) on them and getting rightfully pissed off about it.

In a rational society that actually gives a poo poo about kids and funds their educations, that could be done with school provided tablets or computers. Or you know, you can just teach without some of that bullshit, or do them the old-fashioned way using paper or watching things in a classroom TV.

This is part of the reason I feel like such rules have to be mandated by the state and not individual schools/teachers to be effective. If it's just teachers fighting these battles with no institutional support, it's never going to be worth their time and energy. It's a lot easier when you can just shrug and say, "Those are the rules, nothing I can do about it."

(Although of course you'll always have some subset of parents who will rage at you anyway because you're the most visible target.)

No way to defend it, instantaneous loss, if I had to guess I'd say they're in their first 3 years of the job and maybe don't know this?
