When I was reading it, I kept being amazed that Dragon Ball never did that plot beat, if that makes sense. “The hero teams up with a bunch of former villains for a prison break” feels like such a natural plot device for the genre that I was surprised it was the first time I was reading it. Instant classic, probably my favorite arc.

Impel Down is probably the arc that most deeply explored Luffy, who he is and the lengths he’s willing to go to for the people he cares about. I think it and Marineford also were the beginning of the end for the Straw Hats as an ensemble cast as the scale of the story shifted so dramatically.
