so i watched dreamgirls last night and the ideology is really weird initially the movie correctly identifies that the reason the dreamgirls cant even so much as win an amateur music competition is because the system is rigged against them so jamie foxx first talks them into being backup singers for eddie murphy and then when racism allows white people to steal their music jamie foxx comes up with an elaborate plan to defeat racism with gambling and bribery that works so well and so easily its relegated to a montage racism having apparently been solved jamie foxx himself becomes the villain first by saying that jennifer hudson is too fat to be the lead singer and then by cheating on jennifer hudson with another one of the dreamgirls although the whole sequence is edited in such a way i wasnt completely sure whether he was actually cheating on her or if she was just being a primadonna since the climax of all that is jamie foxx firing jennifer hudson from the team because shes been a pain in the rear end to work with for several months at that point now when i say that racism has been solved im only being kind of facetious the thing that turns the rest of the cast against jamie foxx is that he doesnt want to do message songs so bad things are happening but why bad things are happening is kept really vague the detroit riot is summarized as just a bunch of yahoos in the streets with pickup trucks firing guns in the air by contrast jamie foxx is personally responsible for pretty much every bad thing that happens to anyone his crass commercialist attitude drives eddie murphy to commit suicide and sabotages jennifer hudsons attempt at a solo career in order to finally defeat the evil jamie foxx once and for all the other characters reveal that theyve been keeping the receipts on him this whole time and know that his plan to defeat racism was mostly just payola so they threaten to rat him out to the fbi if he doesnt knock stop crushing their dreams or whatever so basically all of the other conflicts of the movie are completely forgotten at this point the music industry is totally meritocratic and all the material conditions that caused the dreamgirls to sign up with jamie foxx in the first place just dont even exist anymore the dreamgirls musical (which predates the movie) is a fairly popular standard in south korea and finally seeing this movie again for the first time since it was almost new i can see why its a fairly classic bootstraps story that acknowledges the bare minimum existence of racism without going so far as to imply its structural indeed it pretty much does the opposite of that actually since the means of production are only corrupted by jamie foxx having a weirdly specific cleopatra fetish in some of the most hilariously on the nose retrospective casting ive ever seen good meritocratic hollywood is represented by jim from the office playing a screenwriter https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5zted2sMy0 anyway not socialist musics pretty rad tho Some Guy TT has issued a correction as of 01:59 on Mar 7, 2024 |

So Harah got cut, everything about Fremen customs for Jamis death got cut, Denis decides he doesn’t want to deal with child actors so the entirety of the story has to unrealistically take place in 8 months instead of giving birth to Alia. As a result Paul’s first son with Chani and his death are cut, Christopher Walken casting completely wasted. There is alot more I can complain about choices wise and I did enjoy the movie but I guess it’s just kind of sad realization that as an avid enjoyer of the novel I can never be fully satisfied by a film adaptation

In 2014, Marty O’Donnell was fired from Bungie, which came as a shock given that he was credited as the famed composer behind the iconic Halo theme, and much of the music for Bungie’s new game, Destiny. Now, after ten years and many other controversies later, O’Donnell has just announced that he’s running for congress as a Republican in Nevada, challenging a Democratic incumbent. If you’re expecting to find a logical throughline from there to here, you won’t, and this comes as kind of a surprise to well, everyone. O’Donnell launched his campaign late on Sunday night with a Twitter Blue-length post about why he was running, which included a lot of traditional Republican language: “The sad reality is that many children in our country are suffering. Years of ridiculing and demeaning old fashioned “family values” have taken a toll. Our society’s strength, fundamentally linked to the vitality of the family structure, has been eroded. I want to champion the traditional family as critical for a child’s development and success.” This positioning does not seem to surprise many who have worked with O’Donnell, who again, has a long, rocky history with his ex-employer Bungie, fired in 2014 after many disputes over the use of the game’s music and audio workload on the game. He sued and won back vested shares of stock. Then he and fellow composer Michael Salvatori sued Microsoft in 2020 over unpaid music royalties, which they settled in 2022. In 2021, O’Donnell was found in contempt of court for sharing music from the first Destiny game which was in violation of the original lawsuit after his firing, and he had to pay $100,000 for that. So in short, no, you probably won’t see many cheering on his campaign over at Bungie. As for his political leanings, following his Twitter account has offered more than enough clues. As his candidacy was announced, some have been recirculating some of his recent, hardline pro-Israel tweets about the war in Gaza: https://twitter.com/_bluejayyy_/status/1745840677504897129 In 2019 he was part of a right-wing movement to boycott Gillette when they ran a #MeToo-era ad about men pushing back on sexual harassment and bullying. https://twitter.com/MartyTheElder/status/1085413244548927491 Does O’Donnell actually have a chance to win? It’s not impossible. If he won the Republican primary, he would face incumbent Democrat Susie Lee in a rather competitive district. Lee only won by four points over her Republican rival in 2022. It’s been a mix of reactions to O’Donnell’s announcement. It feels like a split between those who know all O’Donnell’s backstory with Bungie and public statements and are upset or rolling their eyes about this, and those who just go “oh cool, the Halo composer!” In an interview with Venturebeat it says “he hopes his own fame in gaming will help him.” Two paragraphs later, he states emphatically that he has voted for Trump twice and will vote for him a third time. The (bizarrely long and fluffy) Venturebeat profile also eventually gets to his stance on some issues which includes a lot of concerns about border control. The entire piece offers no elaboration about what the specifics of his “family values” and “traditional family” statements may imply. So, for Bungie fans, this is a pretty weird development. But it is a competitive district and much stranger things have happened in politics the last decade in particular. Stay tuned, I suppose.

In reality, she hasn't done anything other than just generally going about her business and crushing lots of varied roles, so so far it's a classic case of hot woman drives a bunch of idiots crazy simply by existing.
