It might be in a future episode so spoilers I think they say that Monsters cant be resurected because of the deathless curse that binds a soul to the dungeon, Monsters are kinda creations of the dungeon itself and are exempt from the curse, as for animals i dont think its specified but maybe since they are from outside of the dungeon, its possible they could be brought back. i think this explanation might be in the next episode (USER WAS PUT ON PROBATION FOR THIS POST) Hihohe fucked around with this message at 04:48 on Mar 9, 2024 |

Marsupial Ape posted:Edit: also, ie dogs in the dungeon, why aren't there more stories with adventurer's using dogs? A couple big, well trained mastiffs or hounds would be incredibly useful in a dungeon delve. Hell, why couldn't you train a trap or ambush monster sniffing dog? Chilchuck could be mostly replaced with a terrier of some sort. Earlier editions of Dungeons and Dragons (i.e. AD&D and earlier), which assumed the heroes would be traveling with hirelings and other specialists, often included trained dogs on equipment lists. I specifically remember an AD&D-era article in Dragon magazine about increasing the survivability of low-level magic-users. One of the pro-tips was using the character's starting gold to buy a pair of big, mean dogs. The downsides to this strategy have been well-explored by this thread: bringing dogs into a dungeon tends to result in a lot of dead dogs, which isn't really the kind of story that a lot of people want to tell.

Yeah like Marcille, the players would feel bad for the dogs. As a GM I could never kill a dog, I sometimes felt bad including wolves as enemies even though it was expected.

Also most terriers don't have hands and so can't pick locks. That's the downside of trying to replace your half foot with a small but loyal dog.

One of the alternatives to this was to use the cheaper and more expendable chicken to just have them walk into traps.

The problem with using chickens is that sometimes they set off traps that hit you because of where you're standing (and the GM is a dick unless he's running a particularly evil module). Also people get attached to chickens.

It's too bad that the Dungeon doesn't operate on Castlevania logic where you can find roast chicken in the walls.

Even when they were using literal canaries in literal coal mines, the miners would use a special device to prevent the bird from dying after it fainted from carbon monoxide.

That’s why you keep a collapsible ten foot pool in your pack. Whatever the dog hits on, just jab it with the stick. Same diff. I have a lot more faith in dogs in dungeons than you guys. Like most real predators, ettercaps and owlbears would just get freaked out and retreat from a couple wildly barking mastiffs, even though it could technically kill them. I mean, we used dogs to hunt megafauna. As a basic human technology, the domesticated dog is a massive force multiplier. And you can put little saddle bags on them and they love it!

Okay, I'm gonna go episode by episode and see where a decently trained Mastiff would have been actually helpful for that episode's main enemy or dilemma. -Slime: Probably helpful, ambush predators probably don't do well against something with that good of hearing and smell, dog would bark at the thing hiding on the ceiling -Carnivorous Plants: Probably helpful assuming it didn't get snagged itself -Basilisk: Helpful, dogs love nipping at the heels of stuff and it was weak to being attacked from multiple angles at once -Mandrake: Helpful once, then you need to get a new dog -Room full of flamethrower and pressure-plate spike traps: Would die almost immediately, not even finding most of the traps in the process -Living Armor: Probably not actually that helpful, not like it can bite through armor, and that many enemies at once would probably just overwhelm it -Golems: Probably not helpful, would just roll around in it a bunch -Orcs: Depends, as long as it's trained well enough to NOT attack things, it probably wouldn't cause a diplomatic breakdown that gets you all killed when it mauls someone -Treasure bugs: About as useful as anyone else who wasn't Marcille, so basically useless -Ghosts: Can do absolutely nothing -Living Paintings: Can't verbally report back what it sees inside one or pull on the rope to communicate an emergency, so slightly worse even than Laios -Mimic: Actually quite helpful, like I said it can sniff out ambush predators -Kelpie: Useless at underwater combat -Kraken: Maybe useful as a distraction, certainly isn't gonna hit its weak point for a kill -Undine: Will probably be one-shot, so it's a useful distraction for maybe ten seconds -Tentacles: Useless, would get stung to poo poo over its whole body unless it has little dog armor -Giant Frogs: Would probably fare alright since at least it wouldn't have a weapon to disarm So that's... about 5 situations where it would be an asset, 3 where it's about neutral or unobtrusive, and 8 where it is useless or an active hinderance.

Nobody shits on bomb stiffing dogs because they can’t disarm the bomb they find. You’re just happy they found the hidden bomb. I’m not a dog person, but I am a human prehistory nerd, and dog domestication is a massive technological boon. Besides their utility in hunting, the biggest boon of having dogs in your hunter/gatherer camp is that start barking and pointing when bad poo poo gets too close to the perimeter. The actual problem would be dungeons filling up with packs of feral dogs because they’re the ones that survive party wipes. I also have an argument for dungeon delving murder donkies, if you really want to make a list.

Working through episode 4 now, but I definitely like Senshi the most. Besides already being partial toward Dwarves, I just like how matter-of-fact and appreciative he is of monsters and their nutritional value. Also, the anime is really charming in that they spend time to appreciate each other in the party. e: also I find it really interesting how Liaos and Senshi are two sides of the same coin. Liaos appreciates monsters as a pseudo-biologist whereas Senshi appreciates monsters for how they can be cultivated. Teriyaki Koinku fucked around with this message at 16:19 on Mar 10, 2024 |

The ghosts aren't really an unseen threat, they float around as glowing orbs and poo poo, they're not really taken by surprise by them is the point. They know ghosts are likely in the area from moment one and the issue is they have no way to actually attack them. A ghost-sniffing dog is just redundant. A pack mule would be helpful just for being able to carry way more of their butchered monster bits with them as they go. The kelpie alone probably produced more useable meat than they could carry by themselves. Feeding it might be a problem, not a lot to graze on down there past the second level. edit: Marsupial Ape posted:Next you’re going to tell me that Senshi shouldn’t have a truffle pig buddy.
