i did think the previous episode was boring, but it did have this sick 20 seconds of character animation so i'll forgive it

It was also worth it for the story evolving to "robot slavery actually exists because the 'good' aliens demanded it in the contract they signed with humans".

metallic rouge has immaculate vibes and most of the plot feels contrived

it's an incredibly entertaining form of bad, at least, and i'll take weird swings like this over most of the generic isekai/whatever slop that comes out

I don't wanna I don't wanna I don't wanna I don't wanna!!!

I still maintain that for their 25th anniversary, Bones intentionally made a 2000s-style anime, plot contrivances and all

Also probably favorite OP of the season

Agreed unless the isekai is Weakest Tamer (sad to say Wrong Way to Heal fell off incredibly hard).

honestly given how intentionally the op and ed songs are trying to evoke nostalgia i'm inclined to believe this too

metallic rouge has multiple jokes about the plot being kind of contrived and convoluted. its not parody exactly but its clearly being playful.

It's certainly playful but I'm finding it hard to get invested in much of anything when it changes its mind every week on what it's about. I stick with what I said last time that I'm really just watching to see what they do next in a "gently caress it" kinda way.

It's not good per say and it's not gonna be anime of the year the way the hype played it up but its better than Captain Earth and Carole and Tuesday and its watchable so I'll finish it

But boy howdy what a drop off from the hype

i can definitely see people struggling over whether something like naomi switching jobs 4 times over the course of 3 episodes or whatever is convoluted and dumb vs funny (i vote funny, especially after all of her secret identities and double crossings are resolved by taking pto).

I think part of the reason I'm less forgiving of Metallic Rouge falling of the rails while still be entertaining is that Bravern is managing to be entertaining and silly and hasn't fallen of the rails (which for as much as I like Obari can happen in his robot shows) and is really good too. Rouge just feels like an also ran compared to it

honestly this bit with naomi is my least favorite bit of the show, ngl. i thought she was really fun as the goofy spy handler with the bird and having her switch to like leader of the weird semi out of nowhere secret society thing that's like two layers deep, then the first robot made by the squid people, god this show is ridiculous lmfao sort of felt like it sucked some of the fun out of her character

i do agree that handling it with pto is pretty good. even squid people think time off is logical

honestly there's a hypothetical version of this show that's a little less grand in its sci-fi ambitions and just stays a buddy cop thing on mars that's an aoty contender for me. up till about the end of the casino episode i was loving it. it lost me when it started trying to make the larger scale sci-fi work in earnest.

What did I just watch? That looks amazing. I'm a sucker for delinquents.

Speaking of delinquents, I saw some folks talking up Bucchigiri here and I gave it a try. I didn't know it had delinquents (a big plus) but it turns out it's pretty sick too. MC seems a bit, uh, poo poo as of ep4 but he could turn it around. And even if he doesn't, the set-up and the supporting cast are so good.

i tried bucchigiri and found the protagonist to be intolerably insufferable in the first ep but i get why people are really into it because the last two minutes of the first episode look loving incredible and i wish i liked the rest of it more because i could absolutely vibe with a delinquent battle shounen that looks like that on occasion

The MC of Bucchigiri is firmly dedicated to not caring about the plot of the show, and frankly I respect him for sticking to that.

And I'm sure he'll get the girl any day now

i do like that the alien envoy to all of humanity is so bad at communicating with children, but i also agree that cutting a bunch of sci-fi stuff for more naomi and rouge interaction would have been great.

if you look at the episode writer lists basically every ep where naomi and rouge have a fun dynamic is written by the same person so i assume the rest of the writing team just has no idea what to do with the dynamic

Kimiko Ueno should be writing the whole show tbh.

This is what fascinates me most in existence: the peculiar necessity of imagining what is, in fact, real.

I quite like Healing Magic, but the flashback sequence was a totally needless drag on the pacing in the manga too.

Metallic Rouge is a real mess which is a shame cause it's got a great look and general vibes, and has had some good moments, but the metaplot is just a steaming pile (some interesting facets, but not enough), and the choices about how the plot and character backgrounds have been revealed is pretty baffling.

Just knowing Utsumi was leading another original got me into Bucchigiri but the more detailed than "it's good" sell is it's an incredibly entertaining melting pot of influences. The obvious drawing on 1001 Nights, mashing Islamic architecture into typical Japanese high school settings, and throwback vibes to girls making censored purple food and series like DNA2. Despite the hetero sex comedy energy of a lot of it, the homoeroticism is there in greater measure. There's just something refreshing about it as a modern show laying a fujoshi filter over a something that feels so retro, like unearthing a 90s BL doujin of a delinquent series. You can definitely praise the execution of its fight scenes, but I feel like the loose and cartoony nature of a lot of the other animation is even more appealing, and it's also got such detail put into the backgrounds.

Yeah I think some people are still optimistic/desperate this might change by the end because of typical story expectations but I will not be surprised if he's still mostly awful (comedy!). Definitely an aspect you have to be in tune with to fully enjoy the show, but I have been loving how much Arajin sucks as a guy obliviously and selfishly following his desire to get with a girl. Granted, I've seen a lot of people be hard on him specifically for his relationship with Matakara which is way more of an interesting two-way street than just Arajin being lovely.

i think i decided a while ago that i'm just less into comedies about laughing at awful people than others. bounced off of konosuba for similar reasons.

of the small slice i saw i liked what they were doing with matakara the most, that seemed like it could be interesting and different

Arajin doesn't really suck, he's just really, really not into fighting and is kind of cowardly. So whenever he's given the choice, "getting involved in some bullshit with a bunch of delinquents" is going to take a backseat to basically anything else.

Like, he has his own goals and dreams he wants to accomplish, and he's going to stick with them and not get swept along into doing something he stopped caring about like ten years ago just because his old friend thinks it'd be cool.
