In steampunk not-Britain a bastardized lady is picked on in the noble prison because she’s a bastard. In Not-Britain there was a civil war that the monarchy lost but they are kept around as something to blame for all the lovely social stuff the plutocrats that win the war do. They cut off the King’s arms and he has a bodyguard of basically X-men. In any case the Lady is broken out of prison by her father who is a Duke and leader of remaining monarchist military, who live on subs. He broke his daughter out because she’s magically linked to a battle machine from the centre of the earth. They need the battle machine to stop the armies of Not-revolutionary France from invading under a magical barrier. Not-France also worships some Lovecraft monster that the battle machine needs to fight. In any case Not-France is able to invade because after the revolution and killing all their nobility, they go full on equality and turn people cybermen basically. Not-France chops everyone’s head off but are defeated when the Lady figures out how to use the battle machine and the monarchies subs show up. For some reason everything goes back to the status quo after this book for the rest of the series

an interesting hard sci fi setting where time travel is permitted and the ramifications are explored, let down by repeated explorations of questions like: - what if humanity lived in a giant turd? - what if humanity lived in a skeleton AND turd ball? - what if, despite living in a world of unbelievable, alien harshness, humans still all talked like reddit posters?

This was foreseen by scientists high on massive doses of mind-enhancing drugs who described it as the Brown Path.
