iirc you have to buy and build the Refined Workbench to start including metal in tools, which is available with essence traders in Provisioner realms first as you go through the story quests.

You should also occasionally check your crafting journal (i.e. the crafting section of the journal) to see if there's stuff you could make but you haven't built the right augmentation by the crafting station.

The level of fiddling around that's possible and/or necessary with the crafting system in this game is probably the best and worst thing about it.

BUT. The materials you use change the visuals of the results in addition to the stats. I've got a Winchester made almost entirely of "pursuit" which is a green metal that's great for ranged damage and it looks fantastic.

Yea the materials being used affecting the stats of stuff is super cool.

And I'm used to lots of workbenches. Conan is notorious for having lots of benches.

I'm fine with the workbench situation, but "lol" at the storage situation. I finally unlocked the 40-slot chest that only takes iirc lumber and ingots to make instead of the first one I unlocked that specifically requires brass ingots.

And I've still got rows on rows of baskets for the stuff that doesn't need that many slots yet because you've got to actually have things in your inventory to use them so it's got to be sorted. Every time I get home it's a mad dash back and forth across the house to put things in the right place because even though I know where things go, the inventory sorting doesn't and half the poo poo has generic icons lmao

You'd think "fabled" Chitin and whatnot would have the crown on it like all the other things that have icons do. Nope!

/e: you know what, I think the stuff with missing icons is my biggest peeve. Like how do "coal" and "sulphur" not have icons?? All the tier 2 fibers have biome-specific icons, and the basic components for crafting the game's version of gunpowder don't?

I've started simply going to each and every trader in each and every biome in each and every new difficulty card, to make sure I don't miss any thing that might be vital. I apparently lucked out getting the 40 slot 2 ingot 2 lumber chest as my first real storage option. Brass is a pain in the rear end to make.

Don't get me wrong, I like realm hopping as a mechanic, but in early access just the general wonkiness of everything can make it a huge chore.

I just now completed the quest to get the Elder Eoten Heart offering and it involved running across the swamp to talk to Levine, and then either running back across the swamp to the portal or hitting "return to respite" which puts me on the opposite corner of the map from where my estate actually is, so by the time I had spoken to her, crafted 3 lesser curative potions, crafted the cloth, gems, and oil she wanted, and brought her back an extra offering feast, I had run about 8 kilometers. I wish relevant quest NPCs were just sat next the portal every time like Aurealius or whatever his name was.

If you have multiple estates down for whatever reason you need to tell the game which one to use.

Also for anyone running into the nightmare that is end game clothing, I saw someone post somewhere (and confirmed it works) that for 1 fabric you can get 10 cloth which saves you a bunch on fibre. You just convert the fabric into coating and you get 10 and they can be used in place of cloth. This is likely not intended so I wouldn't expect it to be there for long but farming Jana meat all day for end game clothes really isn't that fun.

Not a massive amount imo. I'm still waiting a bit for QOL mainly

I do have one down but there seems to be some kind of bug that whenever you travel through a portal it resets the location of where the respite is? I have definitely appeared by the cairn all of one time. The cairn shows as being my respite location as well, but still teleports me across the map when I hit the button.

I'm also leery of full on deleting it to place it back down again because I've already lost my abeyance realm through happenstance once.

I think my biggest issue with this game is how much stuff is locked behind quests. I just really want metal gear, I planted my estate right next to a ton of tin for that reason, but i keep needing to run around farming essence to upgrade my gear. I've done all the POI in the fancy forest area, and the wolves drop rate is awful. And the other enemies don't drop it at all.

Also i hate their grenade throwers.

You shouldn't need basic essence for much. If you're doing the Open New Realm Dungeon - > visit new realm - > Buy Recipes and Finish POIs -> craft new gear loop you should barely need to farm anything. I just kind of naturally got what I needed as I unlocked the next realm card.

I will say some of the quests are stupid given that you then need to backtrack to previously visited realms but that's a slightly different issue.

Another trick I learned late in the game, if you are making a weapon with wood and it uses lumber at all, make gilded lumber with a metal that gives melee or ranged damage because it can be used in place of regular lumber and is additive with whatever bonuses you get out of the lumber itself.

They really did.

  • Stack-sizes are massively increased. Not sure what the limit is now, but it might be 999 instead of 99.
  • Crafting times reduced and standardized.
  • Craft from storage. No longer a need to retrieve stuff from chests, trunks or baskets.
  • New interface, including queues for crafting, so you don't have to wait for 10 minutes before getting the smelter going again.
  • Reworked bonuses for stacking attributes on weapons.
  • More Bound enemy-types and some rebalance of existing ones.

There's still work to be done, but this update was a good one. Since, at this point, the main draw of these survival games are aesthetic, I hope this one succeeds, because it's right up my alley.

Patch dropped today that adds offline mode if you aren't interested at all about MP. You will need to start a new character for this, notes said they're looking into being able to transfer online characters offline and vice versa but that's probably down the road a bit. Should work the same except for rewards like the Twitch drops (which does make sense as you're not going online to claim them). I took a hiatus because of FF7 and then Dragma and then a bunch of other poo poo but if you've been away for awhile or were put off by online-only you may want to spin it up.

Yea I think i'll give it another go with offline mode. Though the main thing I wanted for offline mode is a creative mode or at least give me server options to make the grind a little less tedius.

I'm probably going to pick this up in any case while it's on sale, but I do have to ask- are the mixed reviews on Steam about some major issues, or some trivial thing a bunch of people latched onto? I know people were upset about it being always online, for instance, and while I know they added an offline mode, that would never have been a deal breaker for me, even if it would have been a bit annoying.

I've enjoyed games like Valheim and Enshrouded, and I'm basically looking for something like that I can play with friends, but with a better pretty-dress-up game. What's the point of exploring an open world with friends if you have to wear a dumb hat for its stats? I really like the aesthetics of this game, but how much freedom is there to wear whatever you think looks nice without feeling like you're sacrificing stats to do so?

lemonadesweetheart

Its very gear score dependant, theres some choice between the two main end game sets but not much. I think this will change in the future though.

Game is really good for pretty princess dress up. Since you end up crafting everything but your starting gear you can choose what to wear. There are tiers to gear though, so you may end up making something a bit less aesthetically pleasing for a bit until you get to a new GS. Also keep in mind that while specific materials have different appearances, most of them are shades of tan. You'll spend the first few hours running around in stuff that looks like a bathrobe. I'm hoping they'll add the ability to dye/tint clothing at a later time so you can make your tan jacket/dress and then dye it an eye-scorching pink or whatever. You'll notice the difference in stuff you craft from metal a lot more - there's an ore called Pursuit that's a bright green and it happens to give a boost to ranged damage so I have a nice green rifle I've been running around with. Same if you make an axe or pick from something like copper, very noticeable. One of the earlier materials you can get that has some actual color is harpy leather - it's like a deep burgundy color. You may also find some legendary (not as nice as it sounds, minimal bonuses) Everheart leather just lying about early on and that has a leopard-spot design which is rather fun and silly.

I haven't read the negative reviews so I'm not sure what people are complaining about. A lot of it probably is/was the online stuff since servers were very slow the first few days after launch. Also disconnects were a thing though I never had an issue. There may also have been some "the previews show stylish clothes and I'm 8 hours into the game and still look like a hobo." I can't attest for anyone else but other than one crash the game has run fine for me with minimal lag online. I have a 3080 so not top of the line but not a potato either. I've only played solo but it's probably a great game to screw around in with friends.

You're still going to fight a lot of Bound, though they did add some new varieties. Combat is definitely not the game's high point - I liken it to Enshrouded where it's basically the same few enemy types over and over. You can mix it up with firearms and spells but barring like an entire new faction to fight or whatever it's middling. There are definitely worse combat systems out there but if you're looking for something in-depth you're not gonna find it here. That said, it can get hairy with the new ranged types blasting at you while a giant hammer guy is trying to smash your face in.

Bread Enthusiast

I was having fun in T1 and T2, combat included. Though my best weapon by far seems to be my pick, it's a little weird to be pickaxing monsters to death, but at least it felt okay with the maneuvering and trying to hit them in the crit spots and whatnot. The things that made me put the game aside for now were:

1. T3 recipes have some huge increase in the amount needed that seems out of nowhere. 40 T3 to enchant every item, 100 T3 for the next level of crafting benches, and something like 1100 or 1400 for clothing pieces. And the T3 was coming in slowly, I got like 240 for a vault that took at least 45 minutes to do, and it was the same old jumping puzzle, simon puzzle, bound groups, as always, with one big boss at the end that, if it hits me, kills me in one hit. This is at gear score about 160, and tried both level 100 and 160 vaults (in a duo). Really seemed like it was gonna be a weeks-long grind (at my usual 1 or 2 hours per night) to get anywhere and I was getting tired of the similar puzzles at that point so the fun:cost ratio was all out of whack.

2. It's night half the time and I can't see poo poo and I'm using a 2h-pick, so no torch. And even when I do have a torch out it seems to somehow get even darker outside the torch radius. And the clocks are not synchronized between worlds so you can't sleep at home to make it day in the new realm, you just have to find an arch to make a sleeping bag under in each world half the time if you don't want to fall off a cliff. I normally don't mind darkness in games, I don't know why it's bugging me so much in this one, but it is.

3. The crafting bench 'augmentations' are a nightmare to figure out. I learned a new pistol recipe, yay! Can't build it at my workbench. Why not? I have too many other augmentations in range for the pistol-enabling one to activate. I can't easily tell which ones are affecting the workbench, there are no UI lines leading to the models or anything, you have to match little hexagon-icons and try moving things out of range one by one until the one you want is in range. It just seems super needlessly complicated.

I give it a solid B- for now, it has promise but I can see why it is mixed. Was definitely fun for 40 hours or so, and I hope it improves as they go.

There are minor cards that will set a realm to always-daylight if you want to go that way. And maybe adjust your gamma a little bit, it's darker at night for me but not that dark.

There are UI lines that show what benches an augmentation is affecting - you may not be seeing them because your benches won't accept any more, I dunno. I like the augmentation system but I agree it could use some work. Also some of them are loving huge and you run out of space really fast in even a large base.

On the grind thing I haven't really run up against that yet, but I can't fault anyone for deciding their time is better spent elsewhere. I'm hoping that they'll add resource sliders in offline mode like a lot of these types of games have so you don't have to spend 4 hours chopping trees to build a base. I get why it's not available in online due to coop but offline/SP should be "do whatever you want."
