Ford recalled about 1.5M Pintos to fix the burny tank issue, but over 5M teslas have been sold now, so ratio-wise they're probably about the same level of dying by fire risk

The whole debacle is something we remember not so much for the death toll, but for the leaks of internal memos discussing how much the recall would cost vs litigation from dead people’s families. This was back when people used to care whether companies were evil of course. Half the country would probably call it “shrewd” for a corporation to decide to save money by killing people vs litigation from the use of their unsafe product nowadays… while accepting tons of taxpayer subsidies of course

Now it's just normal for companies to set aside the money they think they'd need to pay out for lawsuits and invest it ahead of time so they come out ahead.

Half the country would probably call it “shrewd” for a corporation to decide to save money by killing people vs litigation from the use of their unsafe product nowadays… while accepting tons of taxpayer subsidies of course what actually happened was very complicated and has been widely misrepresented in the press and popular perception for decades, but essentially you're right but also the public perception was badly skewed, the memo comparing cost of fixes to the value of a human life was following NHSTA standards and was not explicitly or individually a decision-making document, lots of other cars had the same defect, and many of the people who died in car fires in Pintos didn't do so specifically because of the identified defect: cars can catch fire for a lot of reasons. all of the above is just to reiterate that it's complicated and the throwaway idea that all Teslas explode into flame because of bad design is similarly glossing over a lot of details that make the whole thing less pat and satisfying. But still fits a narrative about Musk's disregard for human life that like... he sure does jack poo poo to disabuse or counter, and the build quality on Teslas is poo poo, and so I personally think people shouldn't buy them anyway

I didn't have a moment to watch the video until now. So, I don't know about you, but I would have at least had a sheet of diamond plate if not steel between me and the console, and laminated safety glass or polycarbonate in the window. Definitely not plain plate glass. So, I'm only partway through the video. Did the dyno break, which let the engine over-rev? I can see that the pillow-block broke, as well as all the flywheel bolts. Impressive carnage.

Looks like one of the dyno mounts broke and the resulting imbalance caused the flywheel bolts to break. With the load on the engine suddenly gone it ran away and oversped the blower.

Drove my brother's '24 Accord last night and it took me forever to figure out the drat thing would turn on it's highbeams automatically if it didn't see cars coming. People heading the other way must have hated me because it always seemed to lag a little bit. What the hell is the point of that? Is it to help some stupid camera or something?

I just drove home from the airport at 1am in my GFs ‘19 Civic and was actually surprised how well the auto dimming worked. Didn’t seem to lag that much on the dimming, the only criticism I have is that it turned on the high beams a couple times when I could see a car was gonna be coming round a bend, so it then turned them off again after half a second.

I think they’re great, but they should be adjusted sometimes. Most of them have an adjustment I think… at least the ones I’ve driven. My girlfriend had never used high beams much before me. Or cruise control. Fair enough, if you’re not comfortable using them, don’t use them

High beams aren't a convenience like cruise control, they're to help you see where you're going

If you never leave urban or even some suburban areas you legit might never need them. Not a lot of deer to worry about along the Boston-Atlanta Metropolitan Axis.

Yeah, that was the thing that confuses me. I wasn't in the sticks, I was on a well-lit highway. Also, this isn't terrible car stuff, but close enough I guess.

I wish everyone in my state had those because I'll take momentary high beaming over these idiot fucksticks just driving everywhere with their high beams on because both of their low beams are burned out.

You can just turn the auto feature off if you don't like them. I never used my highbeams much, but on my Bolt the lowbeams are incredibly bright, with a laser-sharp cutoff set about 50' from the car, which is the worst possible thing for driving on dark highways at night, so the auto highbeams are actually really useful, I turn them off when I'm in urban areas at night, especially if it's rainy, because they're not the best at sensing taillights, but it's just a button on the same stalk so it's not inconvenient or anything.

I don't know if it's the auto high beams or that people are just assholes, but when I'm in my truck I feel like people haul up on me with high beams on all the time at night. Fortunately my truck has the brightest loving LED reverse lights on a switch, that usually gets their attention and turn the high beams off. It also has four hella 5000s up front, so come at me with your stupid high beams
