I only finally got around to just starting it the other day, but “My Home Hero” starts out pretty freaking dark And is interesting so far. Hopefully others will comment in here though if it goes off the rails in a bad way, I hadn’t heard anything about it like that yet and I’m only about five chapters in. Separately, a manhwa named “Bastard” about a teenager who is the son of a serial killer. It might be worth a look.

I have it the ol three episode try and as far as I can tell Goblin Slayer graduates from gratuitous and graphic opening edgelord poo poo to being just extremely boring "super cool D&D story thing that totally happened copy paste" The kind of thing where someone puts a scroll of town portal at the bottom of the ocean to make a water cannon or something. Nothing of value was lost.

I read on a bit in a the manga since some of the dark or realistic fantasy elements tickeled my fancy, but, and I'm sure this will surprise you, it's Goblin rape fetish all the way down. Goblins raping people just never stops being a thing.

good ending. love the mangaka’s macho boomer rants. strange development with the suicide frequency which left things a little too clean but otherwise very satisfying. all the best characters survived, hell yea. the sequel was shorter and as such had fewer slice-of-life/laid-back moments but I’m looking forward to the third contract (and hoping that everyone but akira and youko stay out of it)

Edit: looking at it again, and just noticed the tag given by the first doctor just indicates she's going to die and to just give pain medication until then. The second panel with him is maybe him explaining this and being tuned out. The second just seems to not even examine her. Ytlaya fucked around with this message at 08:44 on Mar 26, 2024 |

The Fable anime adaptation is out on Hulu. First episode the voices were pretty good (sub) but I had some issue with the characters looking too off model at times. They go with the really exaggerated facial style of the manga, which is probably necessary to correctly adapt the material, but it just looked off some times.

I've been reading "The Witch and the Beast" because its about freelance magic cops and drawn in a style reminiscent of Berserk and Witch Hat Atelier (like, you can see the throughline from Gustav Dore in all those.) It's pretty cool, all the action scene especially after the first chapter are very clear and dynamic, and the magic system seems somewhat well thought out, although a lot of times they explain the rules after they've done it, so there's no way for the audience to guess at how something happens, its a bit handwavey and focusing more on just spectacle. The worldbuilding is... also more style over substance, with things given very literal names like "Continents 1 through 4" and "The Holy Church". Not much chance the audience can misunderstand what those things mean, but also kind of weird no one in this world cared enough to name the continents. So far with the characters I get that one is cool and collected and one is fierce and impatient. I'm not seeing much effort on the part of the author to give them more personality than that. I find sometimes manga will set up some characters who are very clear archetypes, and then at some point will do a flashback to show how they were different in their youth. Because then the reader knows "oh, they weren't always like this, before they were like this." But I want characters to show more aspects of their personalities in the present, not just show me "they were once this way, now they are this way."

I'm pretty alright with the characters and actually like the whole "Continent 1-4" thing as well as the church being super military. It gives things a similar feel to Spy x Family of things taking place in a pseudo military state.
