It would probably be cool to see a major league game in a 10,000 seat stadium tbh. Well at least whatever major league team the A's are playing.

I don't think the Bay Area A's fans are going to go to these games and it's non-zero that Sacramento fans also say "gently caress this". Turnout could be overwhelmingly driven by not the A's still

As a Sacramento resident, it is predominately Giants territory. I grew up knowing more Dodgers fans than A's fans. I think it will backfire massively, and I'm upset at the possibility the River Cats will play games in Oakland or Oracle Park if there are scheduling conflicts (industry rumors).

I grew up in Sacramento and this is very correct. Were I an A's fan (definitely not) I would have spent years getting hassled by my friends and people I met about how I should be a Giants fan, even though there is no reason to be (except when they play the Dodgers or Yankees)

Anyway this is going to totally backfire, Fisher's ineptitude knows no limits

They are still planning to go to Vegas in 4 or 5 years, if only John Fisher can find someone willing to lend him 1 billion dollars to build a beautiful armadillo stadium

supposedly they will have to build new clubhouses and facilities like training areas to be compliant with MLB standards, I'm hoping we get a Mullett Arena scenario where the players work out in the same room with a curtain separating the two teams and then have to walk across a parking lot to get to the stadium before the game.

I went to a River Cats game about a decade ago and it was a fun time. They were the A's AAA team at the time, before they switched to Giants. MC Hammer did a few promos for the Jumbotron.

I guess you mean the AAA park there? I think that was a non-starter for obvious reasons.. I believe the rather ambitious plan was always for the MLB stadium to be built for the 2028 season, but people were incredibly skeptical of that timeline all along and now it looks practically impossible even with the Tropicana about to be knocked down.

Kirios posted:

The A's are talking like the Vegas stuff is a done deal but nobody else believes them. There are so many things to be worked out before they can even start building their stadium in Vegas (most critically where the money to build it is coming from) and their development partner Balleys corporation looks awfully close to insolvency right at this moment.

I'm curious as to how the league plans to finesse the actual move to Las Vegas. They are a minor league team right now and are moving to a minor league stadium for three years. Fisher's going to have to spend a ton of money to make them respectable in 2028 and that's not really his style.

Most people assume that he will use the intervening years (and the last couple years really) of only having to pay for minor league players on minimum salary contracts to build up a war chest. He will try to make some splash when they get to Vegas to create hype for the team and then it will be right back to the old ways or he'll try to dump the team on someone else and get out of dodge with his money.

I know the other owners don't want to set the precedent, but any real league would have just forced Fisher to sell. Everyone hates him, he's single-handedly ruining a storied team and he is legitimately bad for baseball. Throw him out on his rear end! Let the elephant hit him with a bat! Fisher got the money he asked for from the government, but doesn't have the money that's supposed to come from his end. (Well, he maybe does, but he wouldn't be fabulously wealthy if he spent most his fortune in a single day).

When the Raiders came to Nevada, Davis pulled it off by taking huge loans from banks that likely put the team up as collateral since it was the only rich man thing he owns. Fisher's plan is to sell stakes in the team like that time the Wilpons sold bits of the Mets to guys like Bill Maher and Anthony Scaramucci. He has suggested he can find wealthy people in Southern Nevada who would like to be minority owners, but so much of the wealth of the city is built upon gambling that a list of the wealthiest people who aren't casino executives looks mostly like a bunch of former executives or their estates (and our ex-casino aristocracy currently prefers spending their money buying federal politicians from both parties.)
