I fuckin' love Alien: Covenant and also Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom because we need way more "we're just doing old fashioned hammer horror randomly in the middle of this big franchise picture".

it's a tricky thing because people want characters to make "logical" decisions because that's what they, the audience sitting in a comfy seat in a safe environment would make. But the problem is that doesn't really lend itself to much drama. But it can be pushed too far the other direction and every character is super dumb and keep going towards the spooky noise or whatever. Some people are dumb, and some people are annoying, but it can be frustrating if every character is dumb and annoying. V tricky.

Kilmer reloading is cool- but the reason he is so memorable in that film is his complex, sympathetic character. And his hair. Though I'm willing to admit there's probably a huge disconnect between the movie I expected/wanted to see and the movie Ridley was interested in making Prometheus is one of those movies where the vocal reactions make it even better. Like, in this case, none of the expert characters are actually incompetent. Or, to put it more plainly, nothing bad that happens in the movie happens because a mathematician gets the math wrong or something. They successfully build an interstellar spaceship, the geologist successfully maps the alien pyramid, the protagonists successfully collect the alien DNA, etc. The singular basis for the complaint is that the biologist toucha the snake! And shouldnot! But is that an actual principle of biology, or just something you made up based on videogames? (Would your opinion of his competence change if the snake did nothing, or started purring and befriended him?) Is he even reaching out to the snake as a biologist? Like, in a scientific capacity? In actuality, a biologist knows that he’s not going to learn much from briefly observing a single discrete animal. A proper study and documentation of the alien snakes would take years. So, like, go ahead and rub that fucker. SuperMechagodzilla fucked around with this message at 23:35 on Apr 9, 2024 |

Kilmer's character also takes the biggest risk during the bank robbery as he's unmasked for quite a long time compared to the other two.

Heat is a horror movie when it comes to Dennis Haysbert’s character and how he was practically forced into taking part in the heist considering how badly he was behind hosed over while on parole.

Some popular misconceptions/facts!! -Embalming fluid is a general term. It's a mix of a bunch of different fluids and chemicals, every embalmer has their own "formula" and will tailor it to the deceased's needs. If you take a sample of 10 different "embalming fluids" from random funeral homes, they'll be completely different. We do a LOT of chemistry in mortuary school! No you can't smoke it. It's pretty noxious stuff, and the fumes will irritate your eyes/throat and make you dizzy oftentimes even with proper ventilation. -When you bury someone, their casket is put into what's basically a big concrete block, called a grave liner. This is to support the structure of the soil, not to prevent anything "leaking out". Caskets are sealed and often gasketed. Sorry zombie fans, no way those dudes are coming out of the ground! -Contrary to pop mortuary science videos, we do not put buttplugs in people. In fact, oftentimes when someone is in their casket for a service, the back of their clothes will be cut open because it's pretty common for families to undersize clothes. -"Ashes" are not ashes but pulverized skeleton. There's also usually gonna be a few peoples ashes in there due to how crematories work. -Scenes in movies where the families are hysterical and try to jump on the casket is pretty common as heartbreaking as that is. I mostly embalm but my coworkers who run the services are trained in how to handle it in a respectful manner. -We do have the right to refuse an open casket, even against the families wishes. However, it is INCREDIBLY rare, I have never personally seen it happen. We can do a LOT with restoration. -The deceased are NEVER out nude like you see in the movies. They are nude during the embalming process obviously, but outside of that they are always covered with a sheet or dressed. If a decedent is in the embalming room and the embalmer is on their way in, they'll still have a sheet over them. -Embalmers (and all the autopsy techs I know too) NEVER talk badly about the deceased like in movies. We dont joke, insult, or make fun of anyone. There is a massive emphasis on respect. -This is more times changing than film innacuracy, but the bulk of the industry is women! I was one of 3 men in my mortuary school, and im the only male employee besides the owner -It's not as much a "family business" anymore like depicted in movies. A big chunk of "family homes" are part of big corporations that buy out the family home but keep the family name. -The traditional fancy hearses you see in movies are really only used during services. The hearses we use to pick up the deceased and transport them are minivans modified to carry caskets and decedents in bodybags (we call them pouches) They have special hearse license plates. Yes, on long trips we do stop at gas stations and/or go through drive-thrus, though someone always has to stay with the car. You cant really see in the back of them, so nobody in a drive thru has ever commented lol. -In movies you sometimes see embalmers in what looks like surgical scrubs or doctors clothing. In real life we are constantly in and out doing a million different things, so we embalm in our work clothes (suits for men, formal dark clothing or suits for women) with disposable aprons. We don't use full face shields like you see in movies, though we do wear goggles. The scenes in movies where blood and fluid squirts out and hits the embalmer definitely happens, though its not an everyday occurence. -The movies often describe the smell of decomposition as "sickly sweet", or like rotting fruit or rotting flowers. This is pretty spot on. You'll see in movies embalmers putting stuff like menthol rubs under their noses but if you do that everyday it'll gently caress up your sinuses, so we dont do that at all. You just have to get used to the smell of decomp. -Embalming isnt to stop your loved one from decomposing when they're in the ground. It's to 1) disinfect and 2) preserve the deceased for the service. It can often be a week between when someone dies and their funeral service. -We put in eyecaps, little plastic contact lenses with spikes, to keep the decendents eyes shut. In movies when a zombie or someone in a casket opens their eyes, they 1) wouldnt be able to and 2) wouldnt be able to see anything!! -All the organs are vacuumed out with an instrument called a trocar and filled with something called cavity fluid, a type of "embalming fluid" with a very high formaldehyde index (amount of formaldehyde in the fluid. Formaldehyde is actually a gas and called formalin when its in an aqeuous solution). This is different then the "embalming fluid" we pump through the arterial system. So all the blood and guts you see in zombies wouldnt be there if the zombie was embalmed. The "dry" zombies in Lucio Fulci's Zombi are probably actually the most accurate to what embalmed zombies irl would be like -Funeral directors and embalmers are INCREDIBLY dedicated and passionate, we are overworked, underpaid, and go through a LOT of schooling. The old, bitter, creepy, funeral directors you see in movies are certainly the "old guard", but thankfully they are dying out. We often miss holidays, have to pick up bodies from tragic scenes like suicides or children who have passed away, and have to go through a pretty vicious schooling/licensing program. I am proud that the crusty old funeral directors you see in movies are not the norm anymore, though I obviously see the merit of that archetype in horror movies. My coworkers are truly amazing human beings who go above and beyond for our clients. -If you're flying on a plane there's a good chance there's a body on it. Bodies must be embalmed to fly. Do not steal my idea for "Snakes On A Plane 2: Zombies on a Plane -Embalming is usually done by one or 2 people, the movies get this right usually. -Embalmed bodies do "leak" occasionally, it's called purging. This doesn't mean the embalmer did a bad job, it just happens. I'd be happy to answer any questions or questions about specific scenes/movies!! Laws and technique vary by state/country/funeral home, so these are all my personal experience. Kvlt! fucked around with this message at 03:00 on Apr 10, 2024 |
