Nam Taf posted:Also consider split tickets, they may save you some money for a slightly different (or sometimes not) route... The downside is that when you inevitably try to claim delay repay, you need to do it for each individual ticket. They make the process as clunky as possible and doing it half a dozen times is either rage-inducing or soul-destroying, depending on your mood.

Nam Taf posted:For August, you may well be checking too early. Anytime and off-peak tickets go on sale before advance fares. The Man touches on this. Also consider split tickets, they may save you some money for a slightly different (or sometimes not) route. Perhaps having a poke around a closer date on equivalent days will give you an idea if advance fares might save you? Had a look at trains for next week and next month and they're all still £100+. I'm not gonna order the August tickets yet anyway, gotta save up some money that I was originally saving for driving lessons lol. Oh well, it's gonna be worth it. I'm off to ArcTanGent!

they can (theoretically) if you look at open access operators like Lumo they work by squeezing their services in between the DfT mandated major train operating company services the whole thing is bananas the way it's run currently and bringing the operating companies under government control doesn't really solve the root and branch issues, for example the train "rental" via the ROSCOS is the worlds biggest racket I'd nationalise but devolve it into a bunch of city region based metro services and long distance passenger as discreet functions for planning and operations

20 minute drive from cheddar to Wookey Hole, the cave with the funny name. Objectively a worse cave experience but way cheaper and comes with an inexplicable giant king kong statue
