I don’t think Freddy’s Dead is or looks very good honestly. Interesting ideas but felt cheap and plasticy. So did Freddy’s make up. But tank girl is wild

If you like Night is Short, I'd recommend The Tatami Galaxy, which is an earlier TV series from the same director, based on a book in the same universe by the same author. It's got a lot of the same vibes, but with a college student stuck in a time loop trying to have the perfect campus life.

Tatami itself has recently had a spinoff/sequel with the Tatami Time Machine Blues. Manages to keep most of the style despite Yuasa no longer directing it.

I haven’t seen Night is Short, Walk On Girl, but that sounds a hell of a lot like one of Yuasa’s other movies, Mind-Game. The narrative/story of Mind-Game aren’t that interesting, but the animation is buckwild and changes styles constantly. He also did a fun episode of Space Dandy (which is itself a really good show!)

I was tired of movies that suck so I watched a movie that had a decent chance of being good. I watched Suzume. Pretty good! You couldn’t make a movie like Suzume today, audiences wouldn’t accept a love story between a high school sophomore and a college senior these days. Too woke.

Highlander is a loving weird movie hey Like I knew maybe three things going into it: 1. Queen, 2. Clancy Brown, 3. "There can only be one". I did not expect forty somethings doing end on end backflips, the New York New York cover, or that very, very camp performance from the lead. There's so much lore that the film introduces and then forgets, and some amazing set pieces, a terribly shot car chase, a cop that's in his own The Punisher parody subplot that basically goes nowhere, a strange Barry Lyndon-esque duel... Wild wild film.

"okay this script calls for a Scottish character and an Egyptian. We already got Sean Connery on board." "Excellent, he'd make a great Egyptian. For the Scottsman I'm thinking a French guy." "Makes sense, don't forget though that he's going to need to do a lot of sword fighting." "Yeah, don't worry, he's also blind."

Having now watched 2 Ingmar bergman movies, persona and the fifth seal, i'm slightly embarrassed to say, they're not my bag. This is the first time i watch one of the Great Directors and come away thinking "yeah ok" so it feels weird I did approach them kind of as homework, or like vegetables, like "this will be good for you, spiritually" so maybe that's the problem?

Persona is deliberately very challenging, and I wouldn't recommend it as a first Bergman. The Seventh Seal though is probably his most accessible and audience-friendly, so yeah if you didn't like that one he might not be for you.

persona is jumping into the deep end, but i always thought seventh seal was lighter than its reputation suggests. maybe give it one more try with one of his light comedies like smiles of a summer's night?

I didn't get around to Summer with Monika until recently and that one was pretty cute. i never thought i'd describe a Bergman movie as "cute" until that one.

Anyone have suggestions for gif capture on movies from streaming sites? I've been using gifcam for years, and suddenly it isn't working for both prime video and Hoopla. I usually do one or two gifs with short reviews I send to some friends and this is driving me nuts. Am I just SOL when using said sites?
