I'm about 30ish chapters in and enjoying it. It's so strange in retrospect that we haven't really gotten much characterization for the Jedi Council (besides Mace and Yoda at least) before now.

I chuckle every time Heezo pops up, eager to help out, knowing his true identity.

I kind of forgot it was coming out. Which is odd because it’s the most promising new release for a while.

I really need to get back to THR. Last time I read any was The Fallen Star and that was released 2 years ago.

I just finished The Living Force over the weekend, and yeah, getting some actual characterization for the Jedi council members really helps flesh them out as characters. I also really enjoy any time the Jedi's own issues are getting called out

This book really helps bridge the Jedi order we see in The High Republic with the Jedi Order we see in the prequels, I can actually see now how they disappeared up their own asses and missed the rise of a Sith Lord under their very noses

And the main villain of the book is revealed to be from an orphanage, where her closest friends were picked up by a recruiting Jedi as force sensitives and she was left alone.

Maybe now that they're not following a protagonist character, they'll actually get to show off how much of a threat the Inquisitorious actually are

I've been watching Rebels along with AMCA and one thing I did appreciate was that while the Seventh Sister (aka the one voiced by Sarah Michelle Gellar) is properly a threat, the Fifth Brother (aka the one played by Sung Kang in that show that instantly wiped itself from everybody's minds) clearly just loving sucks with a lightsaber. The show doesn't feel the need to have a character call him out on it, but he can't land a blow to save his life, and I think there's even a moment where he tries to toss his lightsaber at somebody, misses, and it just clatters to the ground like a badly thrown boomerang. I find it really realistic that there's some people who are inquisitors not for their talent, but because Sheev wanted a round number. Not everybody needs to be good at everything!

If I never have to read another Troy Denning star wars novel it will still be too soon. Invincible came out 16 years ago and it is still the worst Star Wars novel I have ever read. There are worse written novels and stupider novels in the EU but none of them are as mean-spirited as Denning's magnum opus of poo poo. Just a nasty, hateful book that spends half its page length in a slapfight with Karen Traviss and the other half being torture porn.

Especially as I recall according to reports they felt constrained by continuing to use increasingly elderly Luke, Leia, etc. because that was the only time the books sold.

Sometimes I remember that Han and Leia only had one kid in the EU who lived and that doesn't feel right, but it's true.

The old Power of the Force toys did a few figures back in the 90s, too. I think they did the reborn Emperor, maybe dark side Luke, and I think one of the Emperor’s sentinels.

Edit— they also did Leia.

There was a Micro Machines set specifically themed to it, and the YT-2400 is just mainstream Star Wars now. You can get them everywhere.

The resurrected line had some pretty great stuff in it too, even if it was softer plastic. It's a shame it was killed after the Rogue One series, and that barely made it to this side of the world at all.

I've been meaning to go through Legends for a while now, to do a binge of all the old books I missed and revisit the ones I remember.

I never read any of the "inter-OT" novels apart from Shadows of the Empire. I'd like to check out things like Scoundrels or other stuff set between the movies. There are literally years separating them and, quite frankly, I have always felt the OT is pretty baer on characterization or development. As such, I'd like any source for Luke's or Han's or Leia's growth.

I wonder why SotE and Xizor were so famous compared to all the others. That's why I read it, everyone talked about it in my nerd circles.

It was essentially a dry run for the merch/marketing push of the Special Editions and the prequel trilogy — doing everything you need to do to promote a movie except make the actual movie. It had a video game, a soundtrack, and a crazy amount of toys and ads thereof.

Yeah, Shadows of the Empire got a big push at the time as filling in the story between Empire and Return of the Jedi. The video game in particular was supposed to be a Nintendo 64 launch title, to the point screenshots of it and a Stormtrooper were on the original N64 box, but was delayed a few months, coming out just before Christmas and ended up as a big hit as well.

A few months later, they basically followed that up with the Special Editions, and IIRC it was somewhere around there that the prequel trilogy was announced (Or maybe the plan to release the first in May 1999) and that kickstarted a whole new level of interest and hype.

Scoundrels doesn't seem to get the attention that Zahn's other works do, maybe a combination of it coming out after the Disney purchase so already people were kind of passing it over, and it's his only book without Mara and/or Thrawn in it. But I really like it. It's completely different from his other works, it's a lot smaller-scale, and it's fun. Interestingly for Zahn it also has a few connections to the wider EU.

The prequels were announced in the early 90s, I think 93? As I recall, the original plan was for the special editions to come out in 1996 as the ramp-up to the prequels, and Episode I to then come out on the 20th anniversary in 1997. When Episode I got delayed, they moved the special editions back to the 20th anniversary slot, which meant they needed something to fill the promotional slot for 1996.

Yeah, looks like it was officially announced in Variety in 1993. Can't find the article itself online, but as a couple of artifacts here's a news article talking about it (with the curiously accurate prediction of the sequel trilogy being released around 2017) and an FAQ from 1994 explaining the concept of a "pre-quel" among other things.

Robot Style

Supposedly seeing Jurassic Park was the thing that made Lucas go "finally, technology has progressed to the point where I can put photorealistic winged porpoises into a movie", and he announced the prequels a few months later (though didn't start actually writing until November of 1994).

Wow, I didn't even know it was written by Zahn. Although now it makes sense, I was looking up a list of "must read Legends novels" and they are all by him. lol

Zahn was always the Holy Grail of SW EU writers. Him and Stover and I forget who else. Luceno I think?

Out of curiosity, what's the best-written OG EU book? Not necessarily the most compelling or exciting, not the one that captures the tone and universe of the movies most, but one that is close to actually holding its own as a self-contained piece of literature.

I've revisited a few in the past decade and they've all felt like fun schlocky fluff, which is what they're there for, but curious if I missed anything that managed to meet ambitions beyond that. Even if it's just from the angle of having rock-solid prose or plotting.

Not a novelist but I recently got Marvel Unlimited and just now realized I can go back and re-read Ostrander's Legacy comics. I remember loving them so much. Plus, I have the benefit of guided/panel view which is awesome for me. I didn't have that when I first read them.

Yeah as another poster said, Matt Stover is the author to look for here. ROTS, Shatterpoint and Traitor specifically, although the last one is a much harder recommend outside of the greater NJO context

Shadows of Mindor was a little weaker but I still liked it and it kind of ties up Shatterpoint/ROTS. I should re read it too since it turns out the whole joke of the book is that it is, in universe, a pulp fiction adaptation of actual events and that might make it work a little better
