I love my Alvarez 00 copy. Acoustics are rad for many reasons but one of them is you pretty much know immediately if it’s for you or not. Electrics you can’t tell simply from strumming it unplugged if it’s good, though many claim they can (I can’t).

i think modelers have getting good bass sounds so dialed in it's crazy. getting good guitar sounds is definitely possible but it's not as easy as it is for bass. You can't deny plugging into a 5150 and setting everything to 6 takes less effort and gives more reward than using a modeler to do the same thing

I loving love my Parallax, it has some of the fattest bass tones I've ever heard.

I’ve memorized my 5150 and Recto preferences and can dial them in within seconds. Modelers I just recall a preset. Boop.

Edit: so we’re talking 5 seconds once, either way.

for some reason, i've had the carpenters song "close to you" stuck in my head. so i decided to look up some videos of guitar arrangements, and i came across a couple that i liked:

the straight-ahead one is pretty, and it has tabs, but get a load of this Tommy Emmanuel chord-melody arrangement though!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BoeuXk1j01c

pretty fun to listen to, and i would like to learn it, but transcribing takes a long time! i see major 6th chords and other torturous shapes in the video.

I transcribed / arranged Rainy Days and Mondays for solo guitar a while back and man was it tough. Love the carpenters. They actually use inversions in interesting ways

I gotta say, y'all have incredibly reserved taste in guitars. Everything posted here is always so classy. Doesn't anybody have some wild homebrew poo poo or a fugly neon JEM or something? Show me your wildest poo poo, please!

Mine's nothing particularly crazy-looking, but my dad cobbled this together from random Martin factory scraps when he was first getting into luthiery and it's been my only acoustic for like a decade:

It's beat to absolute poo poo, looks like chapped rear end, and sounds utterly gorgeous.

Nothing feels as good as slamming a reverb-heavy Am chord and then warbling with the tremolo

Did a full setup on my filtertron Mustang (Mustron) and it's playing and sounding great. It doesn't quite have the punch of my Gretsch, might try some alnico 5s in there later.

Im pleased enough that I'm starting to look at a new project, maybe a bass VI. Anyone have thoughts on drilling for two more tuners on a 2x2 bass headstock? Can just use an existing Bass VI neck but I got thinking about starting from a regular short scale bass, and I favor a PRS style headstock. Else maybe I'll go for more baritone range, think I want lighter strings than standard Bass VI, maybe to aim to support either tuning.

Your timing is MOST EXCELLENT.

This weekend I stared GASsing for a new stage guitar for the band. Something with WOAH. Something loving ugly and gaudy as poo poo that'll shoot laser beams.

And I found a turquoise bass-boat RG. It's just a mid-tier indo RG with a crap trem system and poo poo pickups, but :swoon:

It is an Ibanez Standard RG470MSP in Turquoise Sparkle. For pickups I am going with what I love: Seymour Duncan JB in the bridge, '59 in the neck, and a DiMarzio True Velvet single-coil for the middle, all with shiny nickel/silver covers.

I need a working trem for some of the covers we do so I hope I don't hate it.

And since you are asking for gaudy JEMs, she joins this family:

I learned Pillars of Creation because it’s been in my head for a decade due to that pickup video. I’ve tried before but thought it was too hard and I’d never get it. Turns out if you practice and don’t give up right away cool things happen!

Gonna record / do a video soon, but boy can I not play the intro standing up without my strap so short I look like the biggest prog dweeb on the planet.

Anyway do recommend learning for a really fun and heavy intermediate metal song.

100%. If it were for 1st place I’d just hair dryer the sticker off and have a normal guitar, but because it’s 3rd place I keep it there to forever remind me of my mediocrity.

Well poo poo, I've been kicking ideas around for a bass VI/Baritone mod project, really wanted to find a 3x3 headstock on a 30” neck in something like the PRS style, learn that the Ibanez SRC6 exists and might actually be just what I want ..and it was discontinued in 2020 and replaced with a multi scale.

2020 man, the more I learn the less I like.

I suppose it might be a shame routing that nice top for the weird bullshit I mean to put in there.

Here's my sparkly pink SG that I recently put some kirkland brand JB's in (unplayable rn because the input jack is borked and I am lazy at soldering)

Here's my very modified Squire bullet mustang

I'd argue neither of these are gaudy but I love them because the differences in them visually is 100% representative of the difference tone wise

I use the 10-46 strings

10-13-17-26-36-46

The guitar is set up for these (not by me)

If I wanted to switch to:
10-13-15-26-32-38

Would there be adjustments I’d need to make to the saddles or truss rod, or are they close enough to the regular 10s that it shouldn’t really make much difference?

That's very very light on the bass end. You'd need to adjust both truss and saddles unless you have a very light touch - might be able to get away with the nut. What tuning are you going for?
